I recently had a spell of this.  My CPU was getting too hot.  Compiles 
were segfaulting when its temperature exceeded about 58°C.  A new 
heatsink/fan fixed that.

Seg faults are usually hardware.  You might want to check you memory.

gcc's segfault are mostly caused by faulty hardware. 'emerge memtest86' and 
test your memory.
