You can do it a couple of ways, I've tried neither but they should work.  Copy 
the gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5 to gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r2 and put it in your 
local portage tree, else you should find the patch file in 
/usr/portage/distfiles and manually apply the patch.

I have the same problem.  My dual-processor P3-500 crashed within
minutes of installing r5.
I had to back down to r2.
