i do have matching versions of nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx, both 1.0.7167. i 
tried to recompile them, opengl-update nvidia, but xorg still won't start 
with the same error

You will need to put:
  Option AllowGLXWithComposite true
in the xorg.conf in the screen section if your are using composite

i don't have composite enabled in my xorg.conf. i think the problem is in the 
loading of glx module. is there anything i could do to understand better 
where something goes wrong?

AFAIK this is a nvidia specific driver option, an can only be used under 
the Device section with Driver nvidia.

Did you also try 6629-r5 ? I had problems with 7167-r1, but 6629-r5 
works perfect for me.
