[gentoo-user] gimp-2.6.4 fails with libxcb 1.4

2009-10-06 Thread Denis
Hello everyone,

I just upgraded to libxcb 1.4, and the only side effect so far is that
I cannot get gimp to compile.

The build log clearly points to the broken libxcb dependency, although
I followed the Upgrade Guide:

Well, at least you can get evdev to working. I haven't had any luck yet
although I need to try again since xorg-server is about to update here too.

I also know the SysReq key trick now. It can take you back to a console.

Thanks all for the help. Finally the problem was solved by re-compiling all X11
drivers used, and most notably xf86-input-keyboard & xf86-input-mouse.
I still think that any package update that breaks a working config without any
specific doc IS A BUG. That just happened for the scond time.

Which means it is required by you.

Just remove eselect-news. From looking at eselect's ebuild I deduce that its
functionality is taken over by eselect itself.

Sounds like eselect-news is in your world file, which can be verified by
gunning 'grep eselect-news /var/lib/portage/world'. Why not unmerge
eselect-news, do the upgrade, then emerge it afterwards?

HTH,

David

P.S. If the unmerge doesn't break the log jam, you can emerge
eselect-news and get back to "normal".

[gentoo-user] New laptop is slow.

2009-10-06 Thread Grant
I just finished installing Gentoo on a Dell Vostro 1320 laptop. It
has a 2.2Ghz Core Duo CPU, 3GB RAM, and a 7200RPM hard drive.
Navigating within firefox is pretty slow. It's the response time of
the application, not the network. It's much slower than my previous
laptop which has much weaker specs.

I noticed the HD light comes on when the system is pausing in firefox
sometimes. I don't have any swap at all, I'm using the CFQ, and /tmp
is mounted on tmpfs. Can anyone suggest where to look?

If you are using an older version of xinit, it might work, but it also
causes you to have to reboot before you can restart X. With the latest
stable, you will have to use gentoo=nox and it will also allow you to
restart X after a reboot just by doing /etc/init.d/xdm restart.

[gentoo-user] glxgears with no ... gears?!

2009-10-06 Thread Mick
I've updated xorg following all relevant instructions by gentoo devs on an old
laptop and when I run glxgears I get no graphic and pedestrian speeds:

$ glxgears
629 frames in 5.0 seconds = 125.622 FPS
629 frames in 5.0 seconds = 125.718 FPS
627 frames in 5.0 seconds = 125.377 FPS

If I maximise the window, still no gears just a black terminal window and I
get:

93 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18.474 FPS

It's never been that bad before. I've noticed that emerge -uDv world pulled
in xorg-drivers and it also emerged xf86-video-ati. I attach the list of the
packages that were emerged today and my Xorg.0.log, just in case you see
something amiss in there.

Please ask if you need more info.

PS. I have no xorg.conf, but can post the *.fdi files if needed.

[gentoo-user] mplayer configure weirdness

2009-10-06 Thread Dirk Uys
Hi

I had a lot of strange problems with mplayer the last two days.

I was busy doing a system upgrade which failed halfway (due to the libxcb
upgrade thing). This left my mplayer broken since ffmpeg was upgraded i
guess. No problem, just emerge mplayer again. Tried it, and the emerge got
stuck at "Checking for freetype >= 2.0.9 ...". It just hanged there.

So I tried to emerge a previous version of mplayer with the same results.

Next I read the abuild and disabled all the use flags pulling in freetype.
Then it got stuck on libmp3-lame, so I also disabled the mp3 use flag and
tried again. This time configure succeeded and it is now busy compiling.

revdep-rebuild tells me that everything except mplayer is fine?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Regards
Dirk

Most likely your setup does not rely on an xorg.conf. In that case you
should avoid adding anything to it. Look at this guide for various ways
to re-enable that feature:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/xorg-server-1.6-upgrade-guide.xml

BTW: There is a news item (eselect news) about this but depending on
your system config and when you have synced your portage tree the last
time, that item might not have been announced to you.

Actually, what you want to add is gentoo=nox. nox alone is for use on
the live cd only, but gentoo=nox works everywhere else.

This is interesting, and I'd like to try it, but my xorg.conf does not have
an "InputDevice" section, or anything specific about keyboards or mice.

How should I add this safely?

That solved the problem! Still a build-error with the nvidia driver
though... But at least I can work again now.

With 'launches X' do you mean your desktop environment (login -> startx)
or xdm/kdm/gdm?

In any case, try to add

Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"

to your xorg.conf Section "ServerLayout"

However, for me this has tripled any key press and also messed up some
other things.

You (and anyone else, actually) might also want to add

Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"

to the Section "InputDevice" of your keyboard. This will reenable
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace for killing X.

For me, X started to work again after removing ~/.Xauthority.

Hi,

I bet depclean removed consolkit. I had the same problem. Try the "I"
stuff during booting like Kenneth wrote. Then sync again and see what
-DuavN system (or world) tries to install. Like I said I bet there will
be consolkit among them.

If I loose my bet it must be somthing else from the xorg update.

Hi Marco,

bad and ugly:

Boot into grub menu (I only know this for grub, other bootmangers
should have similiar).
Inhibtit automatic boot by moving the select bar up and down with the
cursor keys.
If you have locked grub with a password (you have?) enter "p" and
enter the password.
Move the select bar onto the commandline, which give the kernel
parameter.
Press "e" for edit.
Goto the end of the line
Enter ' 2' after the last parameter.
Press "b" for "boot".
You will end up on a commandline and you will be able to login.

By the way:
By giving " init=/bin/sh" instead of " 2" you can bypass the root
and any other login.
Thats why it is important to lock grub with a passsword.

Thats only my lightspeed, your time machine brand may vary ;)

HTH

I'm betting you need to re-emerge x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard
(and probably x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse and any other
xf96-input-* packages you use).

That seems to happen to me regularly. One might think that the
xorg-server ebuild should know that xf86-input-* needs to be
rebuilt as well, but it doesn't seem to work that way.

[gentoo-user] Fed up with Xorg + hal mess

2009-10-06 Thread alain . didierjean

Definitly, an update shouldn't break an existing working configuration! This
happens these days only too often with the Xorg + hal mess.
I happen to use linux as a working tool and 3 days without being able to launch
a working X is a source of problems! This is the second time. As for hal config,
the author should remember that ol'saying:KISS for Keep It Simple, Stupid.
Now, with or without /etc/X11/xorg.conf, my machine (amd64), updated to
libxcb-1.4, xorg-1.6 and hal last version launches X all right, only mouse and
keyboard are not working !
A line in /var/log/Xorg.0.log says:
(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse'
will be disabled.
Where is that b. AllowEmptyOption ? certainly not in xorg.conf.
How do I get back some input on X screen ?
I also get (with xorg.conf)
(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module doesn't exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module doesn't exist, 0)
Please help before I turn crazy (it might be too late)

I guess you'll have to run it at least once from a KDE4 session, for instance
so it can setup password management with KWallet. I can run KDE4 apps in
KDE4, Actually Krusader launches Krename:4 now when I select multiple files

I tried to use it but it won't open in KDE3 for some reason. It spins
its wheels for a bit then nothing. It doesn't appear to even try to
open. I figure it is not set up to work in KDE3.

There was already a bug and it's now closed and fixed. Kaffeine now has a
css use flag. css has been chosen because already exists and has exactly
that purpose, and besides that, the library that does the work and is
pushed as a dependency to play encrypted dvds is called "libdvdcss".

If you don't use man pages, you may not need to even run it at all. It
has a daily cron job here that I assume portage put there. I don't
recall putting it there at least. I think it would be nice for it to
check this after emerging something that updates a man page myself.
Maybe some extra option in make.conf or something. Oooops, watch it
already be a option that I don't know about. LOL

You run locate every hour? You must really add files a lot. :-o

It's good to know that it's just the symlinks. I changed the one to
ltmain.sh, but when I run configure config/config.sub is still missing
and when I run make clean I still get the following.

 $ make clean cd . && /bin/sh

[gentoo-user] makewhatis -u

Hi,

. Also you should have a cronjob doing this regularly."

I never heard of this before (but I am not the real geek - more like a
user) but I wonder how regularly I should have the cronjob run the
command. Is this to be done with every update or like every hour (like I
do with locate -u)?

Thanks for suggestions

[gentoo-user] libtool

2009-10-06 Thread dhk
I recently ran a make clean on a C/Gtk program I'm developing and now
can't run ./configure to rebuild it. It looks like all my libtool links
are broken. There were links to the following files, but now those
files don't exist.

/usr/share/libtool/ltmain.sh
/usr/share/libtool/config.sub
/usr/share/libtool/config.guess

Now there's an ltmain.sh in /usr/share/libtool/config/but I'm not sure
if I should use that one.

Also the root cause of this was probably an emerge I did this weekend
with the -e option. Is something missing?

I ran fix_libtool_files.sh 3.4.6 which I think I did before and then ran
emerge --oneshot -av libtool and this didn't fix anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dave
