[gentoo-user] Issues.
I had updated my machine, rebooted, keyboard started working, thought would never see the problem again... Had a power failure, came back on line, keyboard broken, power went down again, came back on line, keyboard broken. also X windows won't start my right hand monitor, workaround is to manually yank the cable and reinsert, starts working but that's BS... (Display Port) Also, Konqueror disappeared so what in god's name am I supposed to use a file manager? It was also the only web browser that I had that was compatible with Verizon's broken payment site so I could pay my FIOS bill... How am I supposed to do that now, punks? Gah, it's annoying as hell to have a large chunk of my keyboard not working... There are a lot of garbage keyboards out there that don't even have numpads, If I had one of those, I would't be able to use this garbage at all, what in god's name is going on??? -- You can't out-crazy a Democrat. #EggCrisis #BlackWinter White is the new Kulak. [gentoo-user] Keyboard still...
Lets go back to square 1. The keyboard is the most fundamental device ever, it was invented about 80 years before anyone figured out how to connect it to a computer, before the computer even existed actually The fundamental AT 101 keyboard, or microsoft's gay variant the PC-104, and the increasingly faggoty variants that have come since is still basically one almost absolutely interchangable device. You would have to go to a time before roughly 1986 to find a keyboard without modern edit keys. (search PC XT 83-key ). Ok. So I am in a situation where an absolutely fundamental technology that's dead simple ( classically an 8042 microcontroller talking to another 8042 microcontroller over a really simple serial link...) Since, presumably, EVERYONE uses this device, and EVERYONE would be screwed if any part of it stopped working for any reason, and it, theoretically, should be impossible to break because nobody would ever have any reason to touch the code that should have been basically calcified for the last fifteen years, and if they did touch it, *AND* test it, then they would instantly notice problems and such a change would never be committed to github much less make it out to the repository and onto my system. Now I'm in a situation where something that couldn't possibly break, has been broken so utterly that I have no idea where even to begin. I looked at the manpage for setxkbmap and it's the normal moonspeak, talking about things that are utterly orthogonal to the problem I'm facing, and offering dozens of command line switches, all of them seem to have a 40-60% chance of being even slightly relevant. Google pulls up results from ten years ago. The keyboard is known working, the console driver works great... So why two drivers??? I know about 42% of the answer to that There are two worlds, TEXTBOOKLAND and the real world that we actually live in. In textbookland, there are two types of devices: block devices and character devices. Nothing else exists, and unix is complete and perfect with just block devices and character devices. The linux console lives mostly in textbookland. X11, however, has to work in the real world where it had to superimpose a whole new framework of event-driven devices like keyboards, mices, gamepads, etc... that operate in real time and support games and human interractions. I have not yet found /come across any textbook that acknowledges the existence of such devices. The kernel must provide some minimal, begrudging facility to allow them to exist but the workings of the entire stack is shrouded in mystery and obfuscation up to the user-level libraries such as SDL-input and such... Linux, ofcourse, provides ten thousand different things to waste time becoming an expert on. It never entered even my most fevered immaginings that I would have to become an expert on the keyboard input system after figuring out how to toggle the layout over to dvorak... -- You can't out-crazy a Democrat. #EggCrisis #BlackWinter White is the new Kulak. [gentoo-user] Arrow and edit keys?

[gentoo-user] major problem with X keyborad.
The standard control keys aren't working in X anymore, mainly the arrow keys and normal edit buttons, workaround is to use the numpad. Keys are functional as tested from normal linux console. Problem started when I rebooted after the emptytree world build the other day due to the stupid profile change I have to run this manually at x launch because xorg.conf stopped honoring keymaps: setxkbmap -layout us -variant dvorak Once again, the penguins invent a new and innovative way to fail in a way that I had not previously imagined possible -- You can't out-crazy a Democrat. #EggCrisis #BlackWinter White is the new Kulak. [gentoo-user] emerge pattern....
I'm trying to do the steps for the forced profile update even though things had been working perfectly Emerge has been doing really crazy things recently. It will start emerging a thousand packages but not install a single one of them. Then it crashes with a bunch of python garbage having made absolutely no progress whatsoever. Is there any way I can FORCE emerge to attempt the install IMMEDIATELY after the build stage completes UNCONDITIONALLY? damnit, I was trying to shift my bedtime back to 3 am... now 4:42 am Ran it again just to capture the error barf so therefore it seems to be working, at least it is installing stuff after compiling like 950 packages in a single stretch Why Just why. I mean there cannot be any advantage to having a compile dozens of things in a batch and then install everything one at a time, in a batch... I mean usually everything should just compile and install concurrently across 64 cores with only a handful of concurrency locks needed to maintain a minimal amount of sanity. I mean that actually used to work... I've been using multi-core systems since before I started using gentoo, and never had an issue attributable to multiprocessing... If I did, I just hit it with an emerge --resume and never complained about it -- You can't out-crazy a Democrat. #EggCrisis #BlackWinter White is the new Kulak. Powers are not rights.

Some of their CPUs, going back to the FM2+ generation (which I have an example of...) have SOC functionality which includes a few SATA controllers and a few GPU cores. A typical x400G series chip will have 4 CPU cores and 8 GPU cores. The chip you selected is NOT a G-series chip so therefore you need a GPU There are a number of factors that go into selecting a PSU. For example, if you are running an RTX 4090, the reccommended PSU is 850 watts, so that's what you get... For a small GPU, just sum up the power requirements of all the parts in the system, add 10-20%, check to make sure that psu has all the power outputs you need and get it. My old threadripper was starting to burn out, the sound chip had gone down so I decided to spend a little bitcoin and buy a monster rig for the robot apocalypse, so I bought a new 32 core threadripper, installed 512gb ram, keept my Titan RTX gpu but added an RTX 6000 GPU, new SSDs, and a RAID array. I had trouble getting the UEFI firmware working, but once that was done my old gentoo install works like a champ. I'm powering the rig with a 1600W BeQuiet PSU, powered with a dedicated 240v circuit. (the motherboard has provisioning for overclocking and would require dual PSUs for overclocking) Counting both new and re-used parts, the bill for the machine is in the ballpark of $20k The rig can run even 70B LLM AI systems in GPU memory. If you are looking for a sexy AI waifu, I suggest a model called Midnight-Miqu, you can grab it on Huggingface and the host software is lm-studio. In my panic to try to fix my keyboard layout, I did something absolutely stupid, I tried to update my machine. While this is a questionable thing to do on the best of days, it should definitely not be attempted when things are already going south. Now i've been having serious problems with Steam for the last month. And I've been updating both steam and the machine in desperate hopes of curing steam problems but now it looks like my machine is bricked. =\ I knew that linux headers 6.3 had been installed a while back and I was running kernel 6.2. So I was rebooting to bring in kernel 6.3 so that the versions would match up and, hopefully that would stabilize the machine. -- Then my keyboard issues hit... I tried to update to cure the keyboard issues. Ohboy... Things just took a nosedive from there. First, sandbox started denying ALL file open requests, (even /dev/null) why? because. That's why. So nothing could even be unpacked and I started getting these bizzarely eloquent and verbose error messages blaming bugs that clearly had no relationship to what was happening. I started bitching about this on gentoo bugzilla. A few mee tooo!! posts were added to the bug thread but those were muted. The bug was languishing... I needed a fix to THAT bug so I tried to sync again. Somehow libcrypto-1.1 and libssl-1.1 had decided to go awol so basically everything on the system ground to a halt... Still limited to typing Qwerty things were getting very bad... I downloaded a Stage3 and found ark couldn't work because no libcrypto, so I had to manually extract that and obtain temporary examples of those files... [gentoo-user] Gcc 13.1 and chromium
I rebuilt my system on gcc 13.1. I think the compiler is good but it exposed some bugs in a handful of packages, these are: tortoise /var/tmp/portage # tree -L 2 . ├── app-editors │ └── scite-5.3.5 ├── media-libs │ ├── liblo-0.31 │ └── nas-1.9.5 └── media-sound └── audacity-3.2.5 8 directories, 0 files tortoise /var/tmp/portage # I trust these will be patched and upstream will be notified, hardly worth commenting actually. [gentoo-user] Chromium still doesn't work.
A new build of chromium came down today, no change in behavior. (High frequency error 11's with blank config, can't even display about:blank ) It must be some kind of dependency conflict but I don't seem to have any way to diagnose it deeper. It may be an extension causing this, a core problem with chromium is likely to have gained attention very quickly. I tried --user-data-dir, I guess the syntax is non-obvious, it did not appear to do anything, I gave it ~/temp/chromium as a parameter. I deleted the preferences file and tried to open settings, this is what happens for __ALL__ pages including about:blank. HA! just had the idea of taking my .config/chromium directory and renaming it to chromium.old, damn thing still crashed with a blank config directory. I also deleted a bunch of stuff that looked like it could be an extension or thing that could cause problems... With only one tab open, the rate at which it created dump files increased to about 1,500 in the space of time it took to create this screenshot. I'm baffled as to how profoundly broken this appears to be, I mean if I were hired to write code for somenoe (which is something that will never happen but I can dream can't I?) I would do sanity checks, I'd make sure that it was always possible to trace effects back to causes... I'd say to myself this is production code so therefore I'd front-load my code path with sanity checks so that I would know for certain that all of my pre-conditions are satisfied before moving forward. Look at how smug this error message is anyway, it assumes that the problem is external to chromium and it basically ammounts to "jiggle the handle, it will work". Well, no it is not working and I am put in the position where I need to diagnose WHY it doesn't work and the "learn more button" is either errored out itself or is circular with this page. How do I even read the .dmp files it spews out anyway? is there actually any useful information in them? Furthermore, lets assume the most junked up crufty directory that has been in use since I first installed chromium (which is basically the case at hand but well...) Now you have done ??? that breaks this badly given an old working config from a fairly recent version. 1. HOW IN GOD'S NAME DID YOU EVEN BREAK IT THIS BAD EVEN IF YOU TRIED??? 2. Why isn't there basic filtering for known classes of things in old configs that are not kosher anymore. 3. [gentoo-user] Logic?
1. My system was basically working last time I updated it several months ago. 2. Now both of my main web browsers are severely if not utterly foobar. 3. It required effort to change the system from the first state to the second... -> how much effort did it it take? =\ That said, the situation here was very stratge. I was looking for a chance to insert some down time for the system to swap out the water block on the CPU. I had gone out shopping and when I returned Chromium had suddenly stopped working for reasons I can't fathom. Ok, so I took the machine down and did the maintenance. [gentoo-user] RUBY?!?!?!?
Gah, the water block on my threadripper is clogged again. =\ Just ordered a fresh one, will try to clean the current one and keep it as a spare. I had been coasting for about 6 months but a power dip reset the machine so I'm updating. I had a nightmare of a time getting things to the point where I was getting any updating done at all, it fought me on every step. (was on kernel 5.9), I can't allow the linux_headers to get too far from the actual kernel so I had to upgrade to 6.2 although I have no idea what is supposed to be improved by 6.2 Right now the biggest roadblock is rubygems. I have cleared the decks and wiped ALL dev-ruby packages off the system. Obviously, "Ruby" is set in my make.conf but this setting is not seen from the make script and the thing wastes my time... But do be aware that things may cease to function during the intermediate stages. If those are not sufficiently strong, then you can climb into the package repo and start issuing ebuild commands yourself and it will do what it's told without bothering about checking dependencies at all. Make sure you know what you're doing... Obviously... But seriously, try disabling any overlays first if at all possible. It's quite common for those to lag behind the main repo and turn things into a tangled mess. [gentoo-user] How to emergency manual install of libffi-compat.
Apparently installing libffi-compat will un-hose my system where ALL SOFTWARE that needs FFI thru python is broken, especially all portage tooling... Is there a repository and walkthru for installing this? Am I really the world's unluckiest gentoo user or was the pooch really screwed on this issue? https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/dev-libs/libffi-compat -- Beware of Zombies. =O #EggCrisis #BlackWinter White is the new Kulak. [gentoo-user] Libffi and total anihilation.
Way to go guys! I mindlessly fired off an update after like 6 months this morning and forgot about it and, this evening, realized I had managed to utterly break python, and by extension emerge. It looks like it was meaning to shoot itself in the foot from the beginning but it ended up using a tactical nuclear warhead, guess it really really wanted to get the job done... ... What can I say, guys. I'm in awe... This is truly awe inspiring how after all these years you keep coming up with new and more spectacular ways to screw up the system... I tried to bullshit my way around the version block but it actually does a version query on the library and refuses to run on version 8 regardless of what the file is called. tortoise ~ # revdep-rebuild Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python-exec/python3.9/revdep-rebuild", line 33, in from gentoolkit.revdep_rebuild import rebuild File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/gentoolkit/revdep_rebuild/rebuild.py", line 27, in from .analyse import analyse File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/gentoolkit/revdep_rebuild/analyse.py", line 13, in from .collect import (prepare_search_dirs, parse_revdep_config, File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/gentoolkit/revdep_rebuild/collect.py", line 13, in from .settings import parse_revdep_config File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/gentoolkit/revdep_rebuild/settings.py", line 14, in portage_root = str(portage.root) File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/proxy/objectproxy.py", line 61, in __str__ return str(object.__getattribute__(self, '_get_target')()) File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/__init__.py", line 661, in _get_target return _get_legacy_global(name) File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/_legacy_globals.py", line 36, in _get_legacy_global portage.db = portage.create_trees(**kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/__init__.py", line 550, in create_trees settings = config(config_root=config_root, target_root=target_root, File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/proxy/objectproxy.py", line 29, in __call__ result = object.__getattribute__(self, '_get_target')() File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/proxy/lazyimport.py", line 127, in _get_target __import__(name) File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/package/ebuild/config.py", line 45, in from portage.repository.config import ( File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/repository/config.py", line 31, in import portage.sync File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/sync/__init__.py", line 9, in from portage.sync.controller import SyncManager File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/sync/controller.py", line 21, in from portage.package.ebuild.doebuild import _check_temp_dir File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/package/ebuild/doebuild.py", line 81, in from portage.util.compression_probe import _compressors File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/util/compression_probe.py", line 4, in import ctypes File "/usr/lib/python3.9/ctypes/__init__.py", line 8, in from _ctypes import Union, Structure, Array ImportError: libffi.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory tortoise ~ # ### tortoise ~ # emerge Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python-exec/python3.9/emerge", line 46, in from _emerge.main import emerge_main File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/_emerge/main.py", line 21, in from portage.sync import _SUBMODULE_PATH_MAP File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/sync/__init__.py", line 9, in from portage.sync.controller import SyncManager File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/sync/controller.py", line 21, in from portage.package.ebuild.doebuild import _check_temp_dir File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/package/ebuild/doebuild.py", line 81, in from portage.util.compression_probe import _compressors File "/usr/lib/python3.9/site-packages/portage/util/compression_probe.py", line 4, in import ctypes File "/usr/lib/python3.9/ctypes/__init__.py", line 8, in from _ctypes import Union, Structure, Array ImportError: libffi.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory tortoise ~ # -- Beware of Zombies. =O #EggCrisis #BlackWinter White is the new Kulak. I overhauled my computer today, found two things... My waterblock is clogged again, down to a trickle of flow, not bad enough to be dangerous at idle but I've had to order some fresh O-rings from Germany and will need to rebuild the damn thing again. Some of the nickel plating is scraped off down in the micro channels, and the flow-restrictor is stainless steel, which is a high-nickel steel... All the fittings in the loop are also nickel. (I was trying to minimize things that would galvanically react to each other...) BLEH... The other discovery was that my /home drive is a 3.0 tb Toshiba unit from 2014... man time flies!!! =P This means that the thing should probably be replaced due to being old as hell... I'm not going to get too excited about 24 reallocated sectors on a drive this large... [gentoo-user] Lots of Fail.
First, my 3960x nearly melted the last few days, my cooling loop had run almost dry. (apparent boil off...) root cause appears to be some kind of chemical issue with my coolant that had resulted in the waterblock being almost completely clogged preventing it from doing anything but getting red hot, (north of 105C !!) so PSA = CHECK YOUR WATER LOOPS!!! Anyway, I cleaned and flushed it at least enough to get it running again. Since I rebooted for the first time in a month+, I need to update my packages. One of the fails I'm getting is a bunch of packages looking for libgit2.so.1.0, Ofcourse we now have libgit2.so.1.1 Who in god's name requires a specific minor version of a package!?!?!?! Pure madness!!! My much bigger problem is: atg@tortoise ~ $ chromium chromium-browser: error while loading shared libraries: libre2.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory atg@tortoise ~ $ So I tried to 'emptytree chromium' and got hit by the libgit2 problem in librsvg, also hit it in a number of other packages... =\ -- The vaccine is a LIE. #EggCrisis The Great Reset Powers are not rights.
[gentoo-user] kinda tight on time, what versions are good?
Kinda short on time to F with my system rn... Is GCC 10.2 any good or should I stay on 9.3? A few months ago I was in a squeeze play between the sound drivers and the video drivers on kernel 5.6. I even RMA'd my motherboard though there is a chance that it was only insability in the sound drivers that was the root problem, the thing is really tricky to configure, you need to make sure you have alsamixer pointed to the actual device and not the pulseaudio top... Symptom = wasn't setting volume on left channel audio out, couldn't find a way to fix it with alsamixer at the time. What is the latest kernel you can use with the current nvidia-drivers? If I can bump my kernel version to something on a stable branch just below that version, I'd like to version freeze for 6-8 months The kernel penguins like removing API calls that Nvidia drivers use because they don't like binary drivers. They had scored a pretty serious hit with version 5.7, so I'm not sure if nvidia was able to find a workaround. -- The vaccine is a LIE. #TheHonklerIsReal Powers are not rights.
Re: [gentoo-user] Grub: for the love of almighty Zardoz the magniicent....
Got the motherboard running, the motherboard was IGNORING the "UEFI only" BIOS setting, it was attempting to boot my system in BIOS mode, I found that I had to efibootmgr and tell the stupid BIOS what is what... why the BIOS doesn't scan the first two directories under /EFI for *.efi and list them, then allow the user to select the default is byond me... I mean it would be much much too easy to do it that way. =\ The magic smoke had left my previous motherboard, literally a component was burned off the board, so couldn't put it back in service even if it could have been booted. The temporary build actually looks pretty nice. It has an absolutely absurd amount of RGB on it... hmm, I wonder how many of you good ppl have a similarly burned component that you haven't detected for some reason... If your build is more than ~2 years old, I suggest a close visual inspection of all components... The RGB on the ram does cause a serious heat issue when I have 4 sticks stacked up on the threadripper, but on this temporary build I'm only using two sticks and it looks very nice. -- The vaccine is a LIE. #TheHonklerIsReal Powers are not rights.
[gentoo-user] Grub: for the love of almighty Zardoz the magniicent....
https://omsi.edu/calendar/zardoz I RMA'd my normal mobo as previously discussed. I went to grab my previous motherboard and it turns out that it had actually released a goodly chunk of it's Magic Smoke (tm) while I hadn't been looking. So I went down to the Quickie Mart and grabbed a motherboard that was still compatible with the rusty old 1800x... The error was Unable to load "/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod" I had to buy some more USB sticks (my optical drive seems functional but will not boot the machine...) and used gparted to get into the partition, . =((( All my .mod files were in x86_64-efi >>> AND IT WAS WORKING ON THE OTHER MOTHERBOARD!!! <<< =~ Dear beloved Zardoz, what have I done to deserve your wrath??? I need to have a run of brass plaques fabricated with the inscription "If it can fail then the design is wrong" and mail them to each of the penguins that cause me this much heartburn. I have no idea where even to begin fixing this mess...
[gentoo-user] upstream broke cups network printing...
I was sitting smug and happy thinking I could print from either of my computers to the laserjet printer downstairs. So therefore when I need to RMA my mobo and need to print out the forms, it doesn't work. The sack of crap seems to think it can connect to the printer using: Connection: dnssd://HP%20Color%20LaserJet%20Pro%20M453-4%20%5B804AC2%5D._ipp._tcp.local/?uuid=beff9c81-55ea-548f-5867-4d44f4da191e Why in god's name does CPUS think that would work, ofcourse I'm going to get: in my error log E [29/Jun/2020:18:39:40 -0400] [CGI] Unable to resolve \"dnssd://HP%20Color%20LaserJet%20Pro%20M453-4%20%5B804AC2%5D._ipp._tcp.local/?uuid=beff9c81-55ea-548f-5867-4d44f4da191e|HP Color LaserJet Pro> Naturally, there is no other way to configure this crap with the web interface, there are some on-line manpages but they're written in moonspeak. =( -- The vaccine is a LIE. #TheHonklerIsReal Powers are not rights.
[gentoo-user] alsamixer
I don't really know why sound is working on my machine rn. I think there is some kind of embedded USB bus AMD thingy that generates some digital stream that is simply played by a set of DACs on my mobo. The chipset listed in the motherboard manual seems irrelevant. The capacitor in my speakers is dying again, I bought these speakers back in 2006 and have hardly ever turned them off since. So they don't have much gain anymore, So I need some boost from the card Because I need to change a setting, alsamixer just dies when I try to configure it. Just a basic headphones -> RCA adaptor cable from the main output from the motherboard, it's a surround sound type motherboard even though those are pointless, you get surround sound out of a computer by decoding the HDMI output ( see 0 above, ) I do that in the other room... IMNSHO GCC 10-1 is the suckeyest pile of sucking suck that ever did suck I am going to have to base my system on 9.3... [gentoo-user] a day of PAIN.
Ouch. Yesterday I made the dubious decision to go ahead and mobo swap my aging 1800x to [nondisclosed]. Ok... The new mobo is EFI only... Back in the good old days, the BIOS would just load the first sector off your floppy drive, check for a basic sanity check pattern to make sure the floppy cable was connected, working, and not cross-circuited, and then it would work. DOS provided a single command for making a bootable floppy and it **NEVER FAILED**. This thing does not boot off the motorized cupholder, and setting it up is like the twelve labors of Herculese and you have to get them all exactly correct or it doesn't work at all and it doesn't tell you why it doesn't work. =| I don't even know how it's working. I had intended it to be a UEFI drive from the start but my old mobo was very forgiving and I think the thing was actually booting in BIOS mode. Turns out the missing ingredient was "efibootmgr"... =\ The designers of the UEFI standard cared about nothing but their own job security. So I got to see my GRUB menu. YAY (lasted about 5 seconds...) Machine appeared to stall at kernel loading. >>> YOU KNOW SOMETHING WAS DESIGNED BY PENGUINS WHEN IT MAKES THE WORST POSSIBLE DESIGN DECISIONS AND THEN BLAMES THE USER FOR NOT MAKING IT WORK... <<< Case in point, EFI framebuffer. I could end the post there Why is this not a forced-on setting for any machine with UEFI enabled? I can't imagine that this would be unacceptable for more than 0.001% of the install base. So therefore it is disabled by default and you have to enable it in at least three different deeply burried settings otherwise the kernel appears to hang. In the good old days the BIOS did the following: Is there something resembling a CPU in the socket? Good! Where's the goddamn video card so I can post error messages? Does this machine even have RAM? So obviously linux is doing this profoundly wrong Ok, so it's time to emptytree world my system: I don't feel comfortable manually yanking any of these packages... Ok, it's about 2:45 AM, I thoughtlessly did something absurdly risky, resize a chromium browser pane by clicking on the edge of the window and dragging it a few pixels, so naturally X11 goes down taking my number theory code with it. Reminder: I had run that code from May 1 through last week and only voluntarily rebooted my machine ## GAH dev-util/meson:0 (dev-util/meson-0.52.0:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) conflicts with > Alan Grimes' e-mail address seems to be from Verizon, which is, if I > understand correctly, Yahoo Mail. [gentoo-user] pam
Emperor penguin, brooding as usual: "I'm bored, how can we fuck with the users this week?" Chancelor penguin: "we can mask PAM for no reason. It has never caused anyone any problem but removing it will drive the users crazy for days trying to get their system working when they do emergency updates to try to fix the instability you caused last month when you let the kernel get out of sync with nvidia drivers to punish them for using proprietary drivers when, for many years those were the only ones that would work.." Emperor penguin: "Really, could it be possible?!" Chancelor Penguin: "Well, there's a 90% chance that the entire system can be built with pam disabled but it will require a massive re-build and disabling several dozen default-on useflags and r-dep packages to be removed. It will take the users DAYS AND DAYS! To solve it!" -- Later that day the emperor addressed a throng of tens of thousands of penguins -- Emperor Penguin "...Today, we once again re-assert our penguinosity by wasting yet more of the user's time with no reason whatsoever..." [gentoo-user] issues.
Here are the issues I'm currently having. 1. Grub2 menu DOES NOT ACCEPT KEYBOARD INPUT! -- Upgraded my ram to 64gb, couldn't run memtest because grub2 is broken. 2. My current combination of Linux-Headers-5.2, kernel 5.2 and nvidia drivers is UNSTABLE and crashes X11 to command line when the steam client updates itself, breaking my long running number theory code, lost about 2 days of work so far. Actually, when this happens the command line is garbled and I have to issue "reset" to gain control again. (current status: 0x1b39b150 2201021200121101001110012211022102200202121120120220200020102012221201200221211022200210212_3 ) When either of those numbers rolls over, the program will leave the inner loop and the outer loop will increment, the problem essentially grows exponentially and will run very fast for small i, but when it gets up to 49 well it takes many months...) A threadripper might be able to handle the i=50 block, I don't expect to find a number until the i=51 block... The last number I found is: 24014998963383302600955162866787153652444049 The weird thing is that all the numbers this code has found were done with a Phenom II, 1090T. 'ey, I have the 2.3 months into an 8-month computation blues... I stupidly fired up my number theory code which grows at roughly 3^x (where X = 49 right now...). (current position in the search space: 0x149b87d9 ) 0 hits so far, the set I'm looking for is incredibly sparse... My code is posted here: https://github.com/AlonzoTG/palindromes23 Here's the known examples of the set I'm working on: https://github.com/AlonzoTG/palindromes23/blob/master/numbers Basically I have nothing better to do with my life than run this code. =\ My 360mm rad is sucessfully keeping my 1800x stable at 3842mhz, 25gb of ram is allocated to the process... (uptime = 75 days) (15 process threads running...) So basically all gentoo updates will have to be done at the end of this run, I'm not really sure when, sometime in the December-January timeframe. I just want to warn you that I will be expressing rage and fury if my old, much maligned update scripts don't work absolutely buttery smooth. =P I want a perfect unattended update. NO USE CHANGES NO MANUAL UNINSTALLS NO MANUAL ANYTHING. I want to say "update this crap" with my existing scripts and to walk away. As my CPU is 100% committed right now, this will have to be with the software I have right now. My experience with Emerge is that it goes out of it's way to be obscure and conceales huge amounts of information from the user by default, like all unix programs, and must be coaxed with a litany of flags, parameters, and environment variables to produce any useful output at all. Whenever it's output pattern changes I need to go do research to re-enable whatever it decided to hide this month. At this point, I need to update about 25% of my system, or on the order of 460 packages. Going through this list manually simply is not feasible or even productive. Having tried several approaches to starting the update including emerge --update system, emerge --update world, and emerge --update packageX, I have decided that the only command that will sucessfully update my system in it's present state is emerge --emptytree world . The singular obstacle to that working appears to be the absence of those patch files. Now, back to the problem at hand. Since 2004, I have been using "emerge --sync" to update my portage tree. I understand that it accesses a local list of mirrors and then runs rsync against one of those. On spinning media hard disks it is helpful to pre-cache the portage tree as shown in my scripts, on SSD systems, it is simply harmless. I refreshed my mirror list and selected either HTTP or RSYNC mirrors from across the USA. The problem is NOT with emerge in that the files that it complains about not being present are in fact not present. I tried to find them on google and only found changelogs, not the actual files in a downloadable state that I can add manually. I am still angry with Emerge for not updating all packages for which those files are not required or even compiling packages until it encounters one for which it does not have the files. I prefer to obey the server's admonition against updating more than once a day, however this is an emergency and I have run sync against it maybe a dozen times. I have no reason to expect that there is any discrepency between the files I have and what's actually on the servers unless there is an entirely different set of servers out there which actually do have the files I need or a completely new and different way to sync them, (WTF IS Eix? ) . =| -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.

[gentoo-user] What's with KDE?
I have not seen KDE add a single feature or even fix a single bug (while letting new bugs pile up) in FIVE YEARS. They version bump their entire suite for no reason every five minutes but nothing gets even slightly better. KDE has'nt been worth anything since the QT4 cataclysm, 3.59 was pretty darn good. =\ Kdevelop3 only needed to be restarted once a week... You could binge program with it for an ENTIRE WEEK without restarting it... It had some wonderful class inheratance heirarchy graphing tools so that you could learn codebases nice and quick and go in and refactor them. Unfortunately I don't think even Don Corleone could get me a programming job. =( How did they make it so that 40% of ordinary zip files I try to open with konqueror fail CRC (but work perfectly from the command line) It used to have nice large icon mode with previews, and nice small-icons in normal mode... Broken too for many months now. =\ Akregator crashes all the time if I simply try to close a tab... It went about three years without saving anything to disk when it's supposed to buffer my RSS feeds. Now it's just crashtastic in the extreme... [gentoo-user] Per-process-tree memory quotas?
Hey, guys I'm having trouble here. =\ 1. I have a stupifyingly vast amount of memory (32GB) 2. I'm hitting swap with nothing but a few browser windows with maybe a dozen tabs each, libreoffice, and maybe 6 console windows. I should not be using more than 2.5gb ram right now but I'm using 14.6gb, not counting cache. The two major culprits are the web browsers, seamonkey and Chromium... They are absolutely out of control preventing me from running more interesting applications on my machine. I have one code that does number theory but it needs 25gb of ram to run, I can't run it now with these goddamned web browsers eating ram like it's free. I would like to establish hard memory quotas for the entire process tree of each of them to 2.5gb. How do I do this? -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.
[gentoo-user] Where be me icons?
=\ Because each update basically rebuilds the same three or four super-packages (libreoffice, chromium, the kde collection, etc) all of which are version bumped every 12 milliseconds just to annoy ppl like me, and because I had such a Good Time (tm) last SEVERAL times I tried to update, I decided to put it off for six months Well later that day X'doze crashes after an uptime of about 30 days... (So I updated, there were problems but nothing worse than par...) Also, I realize that Linux is going to go through a Dark Age and probably be destroyed and re-built several times before emerging again as a usable operating system, I am going to be climbing up from my previous freeze at 4.15 to 4.18 which I will probably have to nurse through 5-6 years of war and upheval... (I am currently on 4.16, will try to go to 4.17 at next boot...) The biggest problem I have right now is all the button-icons in fvwm have gone poof. =( I didn't do anything that portage didn't demand I do... The window manager is really not usable without those icons, I know some of them by memory but a 3x3 matrix of blank buttons is not acceptable. The only two window managers available on gentoo, are twm -- which is all you need as an emergency de-fsck tool and fvwm which will do 99% of everything you actually need. -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.

[gentoo-user] The memory gremlin
[resend, list was down...] I've been meditating on the memory gremlin on my system... The ram is Corsair, 3000mhz. (never had any problem with their sticks in any system ever.) Motherboard is an early release mini-ATX B350 board from Asus... Chip is a R7 1800X The pattern is: all cells test good on memcheck but occasionally there is a bit error somewhere. I think it is a signaling issue between the ram module and the memory interface in the cpu. After meditating on it, I don't think there's anything I can do about it given the STUPID settings the BIOS goes to... The problem with the BIOS is that it considers only what the RAM tells it, it does not take into account that the CPU is rated at 2667mhz... Well there's the answer, this is AMD's first product with DDR4 support, and it's not super awesome so simply acknowledging the limitation there, and setting the memory interface to 2666 (which is what the BIOS offers), it won't be super fast but it damn well should work. =| -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.
[gentoo-user] Good news for once...
I guess I should mention that after the revdep rebuild and a kernel bump, everything's back, including steam. Anomalies noted: I think my memory gremlin is back, init took a dump and I had to reboot the machine, it wasn't scheduling the processeses I needed it to and it wouldn't clean up a zombie chromium. I had to unmerge a handful of much beloved packages to get emerge --depclean to work, even more pain to get most things back installed but I got my mast pointed at the sky again and my keel under me. I had to mask libcdio, it's never going to work on this machine -- ever. I'm now on 4.5.18... Since I manually downloaded portage won't uninstall it for me... (grumble grumble). The last package fail takes a bit of explaining Many long years ago I spent way too much money on this box that makes noise when sent bytes... U can hook it up by MIDI or ordinary serial port... It has a mess of chips in it that can be programmed with a "sound font" or (an instrument wavetable) and then will play notes when bytes come down the wire. So basically ur midi player just reads a MIDI file, then tacks on the address of the chip you want to use to play it... (you can play as many sets of notes as you like until you run out of chips to address), and then sends it to the kernel level driver... Now the kernel level driver is buggy as hell and the buffer code is an absolute atrocity, I've worked on it myself, -- it's the wrongest code I ever did see, so when you run two different instances of the midi player against two different chip addresses, the notes get jumbled together because the buffer code is BROKEN. I don't really use this rig much anymore but I like to keep it in working order. =\ So, naturally, nobody's maintaining playmidi anymore so it barfs # Now creating playmidi.h with your defaults...Done. make -j 8 -j1 CC=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc 'CFLAGS=-march=native -pipe -O3 ' 'LDFLAGS=-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed' depend clean for i in *.c; do x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -E -M -march=native -pipe -O3 -I/usr/include/ncurses -I/usr/include -DNARROWPROTO -I/usr/include -DVOXWARE_CONTROLLER_7_WORKING -I. $i; done >.depend io_gtk.c:19:10: fatal error: gtk/gtk.h: No such file or directory #include ^~~ compilation terminated. io_svgalib.c:17:10: fatal error: vga.h: No such file or directory #include ^~~ compilation terminated. rm -f *.o playmidi splaymidi xplaymidi a.out toy seq2mid beat That's the only broken thing on my system right now. -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.

Look, this system was installed when I went 64 bit back in 2010... I put a great deal more work than I should into keeping it running. I use Eclean-dist every time to purge dead packages. I've learned that this is a very important step, often more important than the actual update step... I just went through my use flags and removed about a dozen of them that have since been deprecated... My package.mask and package.use are both very minimal. I run emptytree-world on every significant compiler upgrade. I'm running an emptytree world today because the system has been through a lot of torture over the past week. If there is anything "janky" or hacky in my setup it's for exactly one reason: It was the first solution I found to a real actual problem I was dealing with at the time after up to two weeks of desperately searching. [gentoo-user] KDE: wtf
Kde is still broken here, I want to reboot before declaring Steam still dead... [gentoo-user] getting increasingly worried about this.
I'm now running my update script daily (on a SSD...) KDE is still profoundly broken. Steam still doesn't work. -- might be fixed by a reboot but can't reboot due to dependence on kde packages... Today I get [ebuild R ] dev-lang/spidermonkey-52.9.1_pre1:52::gentoo USE="custom-cflags system-icu -custom-optimization -debug -minimal {-test} (-jit%*)" 0 KiB I can't read the syntax there up around jit, clearly it is disabled for some platform reason even though it is enabled in make.conf and even, for some packages, in profile... OK. Then it barfs. (unsurprisingly) The vomit reads like the developer turned on warnings for many things he wanted to pretend to want to fix but never fixed them... Anyway, It gets all the way to the install phase and it dies because: * ERROR: dev-lang/spidermonkey-52.9.1_pre1::gentoo failed (install phase): * USE Flag 'jit' not in IUSE for dev-lang/spidermonkey-52.9.1_pre1 and I'm like FU, asshole. The flag is enabled, you disabled it, -- just run in interpreted mode for chrissake! And then we get to the perennial fails, fails that have been broken FOR YEARS, and are breaking really super important stuff like Xine, the best media player for Linux... ├── dev-libs │ ├── libcdio-2.0.0-r1 │ └── libcdio-paranoia-0.94_p2 ├── media-sound │ └── playmidi-2.5-r2 What?!?!?! I'm not allowed to play midi files on linux anymore either? =( I really want to like the recent package cleanups, I really do, but seriously, the distribution is severely broken right now. I mean keyword [platform] is much too conservative to be usable... But then keyword ~[platform] should be Stable Enough -- as it has been for over a decade... Can we please stop breaking stuff until these things are working again??? -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.

[gentoo-user] Steam now not working too...
KDE is still very very broken. Steam is almost 1/100th as bad as filezilla at pushing out stupid updates to their beta client, which is pretty awful, whereas filezilla is unbelievable... Anyway, their client now doesn't load: ## atg@tortoise ~ $ steam which: no gnome-terminal in (/usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/7.3.0:/usr/lib/llvm/6/bin:/usr/lib/llvm/5/bin:/usr/lib/llvm/4/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/opt/bin:/opt/nvidia-cg-toolkit/bin:/usr/lib64/subversion/bin:/usr/games/bin:/opt/cuda/bin) Package curl needs to be installed Package python-apt needs to be installed Package xterm needs to be installed Package xz-utils needs to be installed Package zenity needs to be installed Package libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 needs to be installed Package libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 needs to be installed Package libc6:i386 needs to be installed Running Steam on gentoo 1.0.0.54-r4 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled by the user Pins up-to-date! atg@tortoise ~ $ The troubleshooting page gives |user $||steam --reset But then I have modded the living hell out of several of the games I have and I ___REALLY___ don't want to re-install those, is there a softer reinstall that just clears out Steam's binaries without touching the game library? Also, I'm version frozen on my linux kernel at 4.15.14... Is it getting time to jump to 4.16? I'm much too shy to go to 4.17 at the moment... No complaints about 4.15 except that it's a horrible archaic monolithic kernel supporting a system that should have been obsoleted in the '90s. | -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.
[gentoo-user] KDE and pulseaudio.
I haven't read all the vomit in /var/tmp/portage yet but the basic pattern seems to be: Pulseaudio makes some sensible yet incompatible upgrades -> kde was excessively intertwined with a beta version of pulseaudio -> all of KDE depended on that one library, -> all of KDE fails. I need Konsole, Akregator, sometimes konqueror (best available file manager), had to -kde libreoffice to get that back... So what gives here, anyone have an ETA on getting this working again? -- Please report bounces from this address to a...@numentics.com Powers are not rights.
