[gentoo-user] Re: amd64 installation questions

2006-07-30 Thread Collins Richey

I'm coming into this discussion late. Saw your post of 7/17 on the
archives. Just in case no one has answwered your questions.

"I've been handed a new amd64 portable (HP-8000), which must keep
XP on it. To perform an installation, I usually use Partition
Magic, which has worked very well to down-size the windoze partition.
This system (suposedly) has another hidden partition that XP uses to
restore the OS, if the XP installation ever get's corrupted. NO XP
installation CD was provided.

I was wondering if any of the opensource repartitioning tools
have matured to the point I could used one of them in lieu
of Partition Magic?"

[ answer1 ]

I have found ntfsresize to be quite reliable even as long as two years
ago. It's tedious but reliable. With my new AMD64 PC, I cheated and
installed the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS AMD64 distro first, since this distro
has a very easy to use repartitioning tool (automatic tools wrapped
around ntfsresize).

"In order to keep the XP installation:
Does it matter if I setup Gentoo on the portable first, before going thru
all of those windoze installation/initialization menus? "

[ answer ]

In any dual boot setup, install Windows first. Windows always
overwrites the mbr, and you would lose the ability to boot Linux
(rescue cdrom needed). OTOH, if you have an actual Windows install CD,
you could use a rescue CD to partition the disk the way you like it in
advance. The Windows installer will ignore Linux and swap partitions.

"Any wiki examples (gotchas) on xorg.conf or make.conf (as this is my first
amd64 installation) are welcome."

[ answer ]

The only gotcha I found was with the xorg modular installation. After
completing the basic installation, I did an 'emerge xfce4' and let
portage calculate all the dependancies including xorg. When all was
said and done, I discovered that the automatic dependancy selection
had not included the keyboard and mouse modules for xorg, so I had to
emerge these manually.

Also I didn't have much sucess using 'X -configure'. I had to copy
over an existin xorg.conf and make modifications.

HTH,

Did you remember to add the line:

INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse"

to your /etc/make.conf? This should pull in the keyboard and mouse
stuff automatically.

Cool, I'll add that to my bag of tricks. It's been about 2 years since
the last time I built a Gentoo system, so a few things have changed.

I must have hit the sweet spot. I installed (amd64) from the latest
stage3 I could find a few weeks ago and never paid much attention to
the gcc/glibc version. I'm on 3.4.6-r1, and I've never noticed any
compile problems, but then I've not tried emerging empty world. My
machine is too sodding fast to need that.

Just a thought - check to see if the printer was defined as default
during setup. If not, mark your printer as default. That alone would
cause other applications not to work.

firewire port, so it is essential that I can use a USB2 connection.
(Of course, it is also essential that it works with Gentoo!)

Others have responded with specifics. All I can add is that I have a
couple of el-cheapo (< $40) ADS units from Micro Center that work just
fine. You can put in any G-capacity IDE drive you want. If your Gentoo
system handles USB storage devices properly (why wouldn't it), you'll
have no problems. According to the drive enclosure advertisements,
metal case is better for heat dissipation, but I have no hard
evidence. These units have the "standard" external AC->DC chunky
blocks.

My enclosure is made of aluminum. Supposedly, you dont need a fan with an
aluminum case. I was quite skeptical as I have seen a lot of other
enclosures use fans, but while it does get rather warm, like the underside
of a modern notebook, I have not had any issues with hard drives failing /
being damaged / etc. Its a Vantec Nexstar 3.

Ditto for mine - aluminum and not uncomforatablly warm. Since I only
need it for backups, I'm sure everything will be OK.

Many laptops have relatively poor memory and HD speed, irrespective of
their capacity. -Os helps with slow IO.

I'm just curious. The last time I participated in a -O2 vs. -Os
discussion was 1 -1/2 to 2 years ago. There were certain software
components (don't remember which) where -Os was contraindicated -
warnings against compiling them with -Os. Have things progressed to
the point where -Os can be generally recommended?

gxine plays 2 out of 4 of the DVDs every time. mplayer doesn't output
anything when started from a terminal except the following which pops
up right away, before a DVD is put in:

Failed to open /dev/rtc: No such file or directory (it should be
readable by the user.)

Does your kernel have the real time clock feature turned on? There are
several ...RTC... settings in my kernel.

Do you know where those features are in the menuconfig? I can get so
lost in there.

Sorry, my gentoo system is in reconstruction, and don't have a kernel
source available to run make menuconfig. Just wade through the choices
and look for 'real time clock' support.

I delved into that once and I just remember getting nowhere. Does
anyone use one they like? Preferrably one with an ebuild and not
dependent on K stuff.

You could write yourself a little frontend with zenity (or similar) to
feed the right parameters to mplayer.

It's something like 13g of pre-compiled ~x86 or ~amd64 stuff (your
choice) on a DVD. Even after install, it takes something like1 1/2
minutes to boot! Maybe that's because it uses the genkernel crap ?
