[gentoo-user] Setting up a local portage/rsync mirror on OpenBSD
Hey everyone, I've been considering setting up a local rsync mirror for my many local machines. However, my primary server with all the hard drive space (the only one that's any good) is running OpenBSD. There's a few guides out there about running Portage mirrors on Gentoo, but none that I can find about running one on OpenBSD. So I turned here for advice. Has anyone done this/have insight on doing this? Also, in the rsync configuration, the line "path=/usr/portage", does rsync work in a way that I need to leave it like that, or can I arbitrarily redirect that to wherever. Right now I have that as a symlink. Thanks, -- Samuel 'Shardz' Baldwin Shardz's Igloo: shardz.homelinux.net Registered Linux User #410639 -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

app-cdr/tkdvd Great frontend for "dvd+rw-tools and cdrecord". Runs like a charm on my OpenBSD 4.1 i386 box. Haven't tried it on gentoo yet, but it's nice a lightweight. Also if you like bloatware/KDE, try app-cdr/k3b . Nicer GUI and runs like a charm on my AMD64 Gentoo 2007.0 . Re: [gentoo-user] Gentoo not starting with eth0, router not giving IP
What kind of router is it? It's a DX-E401 check if dhcpd is enabled? Yeah, it's running. However, it's setup to give me a static local IP to my mac address, but that shouldn't matter, since It's been like that long before the problem started. The only thing new that I can think of is the introduction of a switch to the network, between me and the router. I don't think that should cause any problems, as it's serving Windows and my OpenBSD server just fine, but I'm going to try taking it out of the loop and see if Linux will get an IP. -- Samuel (shardz) Shardz's Igloo: shardz.homelinux.net Registered Linux User #410639 amarok.kde.org defectivebydesign.org usmc.mil
[gentoo-user] Gentoo not starting with eth0, router not giving IP
Hello. Recently after rebooting from Windows to Gentoo, I noticed I had no internet access. My router, which is set to give my mac address the same IP (192.168.0.104), seems to have decided NOT to do this anymore. Nothing has changed in my settings on either my computer or the router. I get the same thing for every OS (Gentoo LiveCD, Gentoo installed, SuSE installed) besides windows. I'm totally stumped. Sometimes eth0 gets enabled at startup but gets no IP (SuSE), other times (Gentoo & Gentoo LiveCD) it doesn't and I have to run ifconfig eth0 up. Running "route add eth0 192.168.0.1" returns "eth0: Host name lookup failure" ifconfig returns: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:17:18:D5:4A UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:498 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:2 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:152940 (149.3 Kb) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:19 base address:0xe000 lo Link encap: Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:1188 (1.1 Kb) TX bytes:1188 (1.1 b) Any help would be apreciated, I'm stumped. -- Samuel (shardz) Shardz's Igloo: shardz.homelinux.net Registered Linux User #410639 amarok.kde.org defectivebydesign.org usmc.mil

Re: [gentoo-user] Gmail + Email Client = No way
Well, I'll see if there aren't any settings I need to muck around with. A 15 minute delay is pretty bad, as I need most of my email to be in my inbox pronto. As for KMail, Mick, that was the worst of all my experiences. It wasn't just "messy" it was completely b0rked. It would repeatedly grab the same emails (with the "get all in inbox" off), adding about 3 or 4 every time. [gentoo-user] Gmail + Email Client = No way
For last year or so, I've been using Gmail with Firefox, all in browser, and have wanted to move to a local email client (using Thunderbird or Sylpheed-Claws).Unfortunately, the only time I have had any success with this was with the Windows port of Thunderbird. Otherwise, it only grabs about a hundred or so emails at a time, and will never get the latest emails. As well, the time coding is all messed up. I've got a few emails from 1904, and for some reason the 06/08/03 (2006 - August - 3rd, strange order) appear before the 06/08/22 emails, no matter what I do. I've repeatedly gone to gmail > settings > forwarding and POP and chose "all emails", but whatever client will most definately not grab all emails. I know other gmail users that have been very successful with email clients, and I would very much like to be one of them. Is there a setting that needs to be switched on that I missed? Do I need to just abandon the whole thing?Thanks,-- Samuel (shardz)Noha+Shardz Productions: nsproductions.co.nrRegistered Linux User #410639amarok.kde.orgusmc.mil

[gentoo-user] XDM / GDM hangs when logging in.
I've recently installed GDM, XDM, and Fluxbox on a new Gentoo machine. When I boot to XDM, and login as root, everything is fine and dandy, with a nice Fluxbox desktop. When I login as my user, it just hangs on a black screen (which xdm used to do when it was pointing to a wm that didn't exist). CAD, CAB, and CAF1 do nothing, and I'm forced to reboot via the power button. I do not know why it is doing this (perhaps bad permissions for fluxbox?), and I would prefer not to do everything as root. Re: [gentoo-user] Network connection repeatedly failing!
With those problems resolved, another arises. I have since moved my computer back to my house (to stay). Upon initial boot, it complained about not finding certain things (gateway, nameserver), which is obviously the fact that I'm using dhcp. I then changed the settings in /etc/conf.d/net, then rebooted. It all seemed fine, but ping, emerge, and firefox dont work for anything public, and I'm wondering if I did something wrong. No proxies, just need those specific things. I tried running "net-setup eth0", which worked, untill I tried to ping www.google.com, and 10.0.0.1 (and other computers in my workplace). Also, does anyone know of a tool that allows you to play audio from a terminal? Basically, sending audio to standard audio out? I'd like to be able to listen to music (all .ogg and .mp3, if it makes a difference), while in runlevel 3. [gentoo-user] Palm Desktop to Kontact?
Hello. A friend of mine runs a small business, all on Windows and Macintosh. After having an extremely good experience on my Linux machine, I have talked him into switching some of his computers to Linux. On his "Business" machine, he checks email, manages documents, browses the web, and manages a database of people, with Palm desktop. Since these tasks are fairly easy to be done on Linux, this will be his first machine. Unfortunately, his Palm Desktop database is so huge, it would take days to enter the database by hand into Kontact, or another program that does the same thing. So, is there a way to get the information from Palm Desktop into Kontact, in a relatively easy manner? I don't mind doing some work and jumping though some hoops to get it done, but we definately want to avoid entering everything by hand. Re: [gentoo-user] Re: 300GB HD
One problem, only one place to put the drive. It's a shitty eMachines case.I'm building a new comp over the summer, but I'm gonna add the 300 to this comp, and just re-do everything once I get a new mobo and case. I'm planning on quad-booting. Or even more.40 GB's of Windows XP (I am a gamer. Some games I just cannot get to work under Linux)60 GB's of SuSE (I have an old pro version.)80 GB's of Gentoo 2006.0 (yay!) 20 GB's of Shared Files (Music, and whatever needs to be shared)then the rest will be unpartitioned, mainly for trying out some BSD's and other distro's. to be partitioned as appropriate. That's my game plan so far. It's subject to change easily. Again, I've had trouble locating a PSU that will fit in the case. This is worse then getting a Dell. For my next comp, I'm obviously building my own (I got this for free in 2001). In a very, very large tower case. I'll probably then stick this current 40GB HD in here and use the comp as a household server running BSD/Linux and hosting LAN game servers and GNUMP3d, and whatever I see fit. It's a 250V (I think) Power supply and I've already got an Nvidia GeForce 6200 GT in there, so I'm also afraid of it being too much for my computer to handle. It would be my only HD in the machine though. I'm not sure if I should shoot for a smaller drive. I _need_ these 300GB's though. It takes me about 2 days to fill up a 40GB HD with everything, and that's just single-booting. I am content with switching to a smaller drive though if it is impossible to run this certain HD.
