[gentoo-user] diskless machine

2006-03-06 Thread Stefan Istvan
Hello!
I've tried to setup a diskless environment based on this howto:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/diskless-howto.xml

When the client starts booting and try to download the kernel, it says
that it is not a valid image. Why?

Thank you for your help in advance,
Istvan

I tried lunching firefox both with artsdsp and aoss, but when I load the
flash page, first it produces sound, then firefox is freezes. I tested
with http://www.kubrick2001.com site.
If I start konqueror with artsdsp or aoss, it plays flash anim, but
still with no sound.

Doesn't solved the problem, but thanks.

I've tried to set up the things you suggested, but everything remained
the same.
I've tried it using blackbox instead of kde, and checked that artsd not
running, but sill heard no sound from flash anims, though xmms and
mplayer had sound.
So I think it is not only kde problem. I also tried it from konqueror
and firefox, with the same result.

[gentoo-user] no sound when playing flash

2006-02-28 Thread Stefan Istvan
Hello List,

I have two machines with Gentoo Linux installed, and one of them I don't
hear sound when playing flash anims either in konqueror or in firefox.
On the other machine I hear sounds well in flash anims. Other
applications play sound well.
I don't find any significant differencies between the two install, so I
thought I ask it in this list.

Where should I search for the solution?

Thank you for your help in advance,

I've tried the version you suggested, but have the same result.
But I found this in the kernel log:
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device :01:00.0 disabled
ACPI: PCI Interrupt :01:00.0[A] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 201
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-7174 Tue Mar

What does this mean?

Thanks,
Istvan

Re: [gentoo-user] nvidia and X

2006-02-01 Thread Stefan Istvan
> Hi,
>
> load the module before starting X.

Hello,
I got three answers to my question, and I answer now for all of the
three here:

Istvan, Hermann:
I installed the nvidia-kernel ebuild, and I load the nvidia kernel
module before starting X.
# lsmod|grep nvidia
nvidia 3469788 0
agpgart34508 2 nvidia,via_agp

I realised that I have another nvidia kernel module:
/lib/modules/2.6.15-gentoo-r1/kernel/drivers/char/agp/nvidia-agp.ko
Unfortunately X doesn't start with this module either.

Neil:
Yes, I know that the new version of Nvidia driver does not support my
card, when I tried to install it warned me about it. So, I put those two
lines into the package.mask file, and I installed
nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4 and nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r6.

I think, that X complains not about the kernel module, but the nvidia
module of Xorg, which is located in
/usr/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o and part of the nvidia-glx
package.

Here is some part of the X log:

If other part of the log is needed to find out what's wrong, tell me,
and I will provide it.

Istvan

[gentoo-user] nvidia and X

2006-02-01 Thread Stefan Istvan
Hello List!

I have a videocard of this type:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV5M64 [RIVA TNT2
Model 64/Model 64 Pro] (rev 15)

I installed nvidia-glx as it is described in the Gentoo Linux nVidia
Guide ( http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml )
When I start X, I get the following error:
Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!

If I change the Diver section in the X config file from nvidia to nv, X
starts up, but without 3D support.

Thank you for your help in advance,
Istvan

Thanks for the answer.
I will try the rpm version also, but first I have to migrate from 2.4 to
2.6 kernel.

[gentoo-user] smart array 642 monitoring and hot-swap

2006-01-27 Thread Stefan Istvan
Hello List!

Is anyone using this type of controller?
I have this in our server, and it works well, except that I can't
monitor it at all, and the hot-plug doesn't work either. I read the
documentation of the cciss driver, and it says that the hotplug function
works only for sequential drives (tape). Is it true? Is there any way to
use the hotplug functionality of this controller under Linux?

Thank you for your help in advance,
Istvan

[gentoo-user] hpasm doesn't work

2006-01-18 Thread Stefan Istvan
Hello List!

Has anyone tried to use the hpasm package on a HP Proliant server?
I have tried it, but I have problems.
When I execute this command:
/etc/init.d/hpasm status

I get this:
/etc/init.d/hpasm: line 20: /etc/init.d/functions: No such file or
directory

It seems to me that this package is originally made for RedHat, and
that's why it doesn't run well under Gentoo.

Istvan
