Asterisk, Hylafax etc. (nothing graphic intensive).

- IN WIN BL631 Low Profile Micro ATX Case w/ 300W Power Supply,
- AMD FX-8350 Processor 4.0GHz w/ 16MB Cache
- Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 w/ DDR3, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan
- Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB DDR3-1866MHz CL10 Dual Channel Kit
- Samsung 850 EVO Series mSATA Solid State Drive, 1TB
- Asus GeForce GT 720 Silent CSM, 2GB, PCI-E w/ D-Sub VGA, DVI, HDMI

Will I have any problems installing Gentoo on this configuration, eg.
with Video Card etc.?

Good hint, thank you.
I've removed both lines from fstab:
# Scanner
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults,devmode=0666 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0

and the system booted normally with openrc-0.18.4

Question, why isn't the line:
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
needed anymore?

All my other systems have this line in fstab.

Does it mean I should add: "nofail" to Scanner and "/proc" line?

[gentoo-user] no network "eth0" after upgrade.

2015-12-19 Thread thelma
I just upgraded one of my systems and upon boot there is no network:

/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
* Mounting local filesystems ...
mount: mount point /proc/bus/usb does not exist
* Some local filesystem failed to start
ERROR: localmount failed to start
ERROR: cannot start net.eth0 as localmount would not start

rc-status sysinit
sysfs [ started ]
dmesg [ started ]
devfs [ started ]
tmpfiles.dev [ started ]
udev [ started

I can not even ssh to the system as network is not working.
What to check next?

The users are not that knowledgeable to do any of that DNS, proxy/vpn etc.
I know VirtualBox IP address and can block the page "facebook" for
individual IP or certain range in dd-wrt. But my problem is getting the
dd-wrt "access control" to recognize and block "https".
Trying to block by URL: https://www.facebook.com/ doesn't work.

That will work, but if they will use boot VirtualBox Windows it will
by-pass that setting.

I'm using dd-wrt. The "access restriction" can block http but not https
and I'm not good in iptables :-/
In addition users are using VirtualBox on the network as well.

But I'm not sure what fix it.

Maybe "modprobe vboxpci" or re-adding "user" to vboxusers group.

I just log-out / log-in and the USB printer was recognized by VirtualBox.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

[gentoo-user] Virtualbox not displaying USB devices

2015-11-26 Thread thelma

I'm running Windows-7 in Virtualbox, everything worked OK yesterday but today
Virtualbox does not see any USB devices.
I have a USB label printer and it is recognized by Gentoo host:

[ 6455.295503] usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=04f9, idProduct=2028
[ 6455.295505] usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 6455.295508] usb 3-1: Product: QL-570
[ 6455.295509] usb 3-1: Manufacturer: Brother
[ 6455.295511] usb 3-1: SerialNumber: G2Z917467
[ 6455.295612] usb 3-1: usb_probe_device
[ 6455.295615] usb 3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 6455.297499] usb 3-1: adding 3-1:1.0 (config #1, interface 0)
[ 6455.297541] usblp 3-1:1.0: usb_probe_interface
[ 6455.297544] usblp 3-1:1.0: usb_probe_interface - got id

Setting in Virtualbox: "USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller" is Enabled.

I'm in "vboxusers" group.

fd@clinic-amd ~ $ groups
wheel uucp audio cdrom cdrw usb users scanner fd plugdev vboxusers

What else should I checked for?

Recently I just upgraded to "openssh-7" but that should have nothing to do with
Virtualbox and USB.
I connected the QL-570 (USB printer) to my backup machine and VirtualBox
recognize it OK

Yes, nxserver works with openssh-7; I don't know why I couldn't make it
to work during upgrade few weeks ago :-/

openssh-7.xxx (screwed up) by disabling ssh-dss key (that is what
nxserver is using).
Trying to enable the "ssh-dss" via sshd_config does not work!

So the only way to go about it is to downgrade to openssh-6.xxx

It works from bash script but when I entered that entire command into XFC
"Configure Custom Action" menu:
exec gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile="$(basename "$1"
.pdf)-join.pdf" "$@" %N

I usually get the output file name as "-join.pdf" (no prefix name) and when I
highlight the file name "-join.pdf" + another pdf file, it only includes one
pdf file and it overrides the file name: "-join.pdf"

"pdfunite" works but I have to add/specify output file name.
With "pdfjoin" it automatically creates the last_name_file + "-join.pdf"
suffix.

In XFCE in "Configure Custom Action" menu entry I added:
pdfjoin %N

so highlighting several pdf files it gives me output file name "-join"
if I run it again on same file I get: "-join-join"

With "pdfunite" it overrides the same file name.

The only software that uses ssh-dss key and I need is nxserver.

I just added a line to my: sshd_config
PubkeyAcceptedKeyTypes=+ssh-dss

restarted "sshd and nxserver" but I nxserver still doesn't work,
running: nxsetup --test (I get):

I think the reason is that OpenSSH 7.0 disables ssh-dss keys by default
https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2015-08-13-openssh-weak-keys.html

And and nxserver is using ssh-dss keys by default.

I have to find a way a way to replace the ssh-dss key in: /etc/nxserver/ with
RSA one.

Do I just run: ssh-keygen -t rsa
and copy the key pair to /etc/nxserver/ directory?

[gentoo-user] openssh-7.1_p1-r2 won't allow "nxserver" to connect

2015-11-13 Thread thelma
I'm running: nxserver-freenx-0.7.3_p104-r7
After recent upgrade, system installed new stable openssh-7.1_p1-r2

The problem is the new openssh-7.1_p1-r2 will not allow my my "nxserver" to
connect, I get an error:
Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive) see below:

nxsetup --test
...
< done

> Testing your nxserver connection ...
Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive).
Fatal error: Could not connect to NX Server.

Please check your ssh setup:

The following are _examples_ of what you might need to check.

- Make sure "nx" is one of the AllowUsers in sshd_config.
(or that the line is outcommented/not there)
- Make sure "nx" is one of the AllowGroups in sshd_config.
(or that the line is outcommented/not there)
- Make sure your sshd allows public key authentication.
- Make sure your sshd is really running on port 22.
- Make sure your sshd_config AuthorizedKeysFile in sshd_config is set
to authorized_keys2.
(this should be a filename not a pathname+filename)
  - Make sure you allow ssh on localhost, this could come from some
restriction of:
-the tcp wrapper. Then add in /etc/hosts.allow: ALL:localhost
  -the iptables. add to it:
 $ iptables -A INPUT  -i lo -j ACCEPT
 $ iptables -A OUTPUT -o lo -j ACCEPT

What I should be getting is this:
> Testing your nxserver connection ...
HELLO NXSERVER - Version 3.2.0-74-TEAMBZR104 OS (GPL, using backend: 3.5.0)
NX> 105 quit
Quit
NX> 999 Bye
<--- done

I did not change anything in sshd_config.
But I downgraded to: openssh-6.9_p1-r2 and nxserver connects OK.

What could be the problem with new: openssh-7.1_p1-r2

Thank you for detailed instructions, that was a good idea but I'm
puzzled and surprised by the result.

I created two new profiles:
salvage1 (new)
salvage2 (new)
test (this profile is damaged)

Originally started profile salvage1, salvage2 to create all the
necessary files.

I've copied all the files from: .mozilla/firefox/tscsip8f.test/ (not
sub-folders)
to: salvage1 profile, indeed something is dammage CPU goes 100%
Deleted "salvage1" and recreated it.

Now, I copied files "one by one" from test profile to salvage1 and
started "salvage1" every time to make sure it work. At the same time I
copied the same file from "test" to "salvage2" (without starting
"salvage2"); I was only starting "salvege1" after each file I copied.
I finished copping all the file from test "one-by-one" starting the
profile "salvage1" and it worked but when I started profile "salvage2"
the CPU when 100%.
So it seems to me every time I was restarting profile "salvage1" Firefox
was correcting the error some how.

Though, I can not import the bookmarks, I'm on Firefox-bin-38.3.0
There is no entry: Bookmarks ==> Manage Bookmarks
I have: Bookmarks ==> Show All Bookmarks
where I can restore and backup bookmars. I've tried to restore bookmarks
from file: bookmarks-2015-11-12.json
but I'm getting an error message: "Unable to process the backup file."

I do agree, but I'm looking for a way to fix it. What file should I
delete from Firefox profile. I just want to retain bookmarks, passwords

I'm using other Firefox profile on the same machine and every works

So I don't see how hardware would have anything to do with it.

I did run test several times, still get the same numbers. Maybe the
reason is that one system is much smaller slower.

The SSD is running on smaller box: Atom-TM-_CPU_330_@_1.60GHz

It seems to me that SSD drives are slower than standard spinning disks.
I was just comparing my two disk with hdparm

1.) Western Digital model: Model=WDC WD2002FAEX-007BA0
 hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 9406 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4705.88 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 432 MB in 3.00 seconds = 143.92 MB/sec

2.) Intel SSD model Model=INTEL SSDSC2BF480A5
/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 1292 MB in 2.00 seconds = 645.51 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 536 MB in 3.00 seconds = 178.63 MB/sec

It seems to me the spinning disk WD is faster than my Intel SSD
So is there an advantage of overpaying for SSD?

I was thinking of going with Intel instead of AMD.

Regarding better motherboard my preference is one that use 100% Jpanese

YES, yes that is my concern as well. Many of my boxes are running 24/7
and I have replaced PSU many time.
For example I have: Intel Atom CPU 330 @1.60GHz (run 24/7 Hylafax +
Asterisk)
It a tiny box, has one of those external 12V power adapters, I have
replaced that adapter 2-times and my the PS fried as well at the same
time, so I think PS was responsible for it. I have now SSD 250GB in it.

So yes, I would like to find good power supply with JAPANESE capacitors
if possible. That Chinese piece of CRAP doesn't last long.

Any recommendation for PSU with JAPANESE capacitors?
My problem is I'm buying a small case again:
INWIN BL631 Low Power Micro ATX Case 13" x 3.8" x 14.4"

so I don't know if I'll have very many choices when it comes to PSU

I don't have that much experience with RAID so if something goes wrong
by the time I trouble shoot it what when wrong and how to fix it, it
might take some time (a day+ or so); I can not afford it.

My solution is to run two boxes if one goes down to switch to another
box takes me only 15min.

Most of the new video cards have only DVI or HDMI connections.
On my current setup I have two boxes using an old 9-pin (??) video
connection/cable connected via KVM switch, so quick hitting "2x Scroll
Lock" allows me for quick switching between them. If I replace the box
with DVI/HDMI connection I'll be looking for a new KVM hybrid switch (if
one exist) or a different solution. I only want one

When it comes to price I think the 1TB SDD is expensive in my case +
$177.99CAD warranty (though I don't know if I need warranty, or why they
are charging me for it)?

Here is my pricing in CAD

- INWIN BL631 Low Power Micro ATX Case w/300W power supply $84.99
- Gigabit GA-78LMT-USB3 w/DDR3, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan $79.99
- Samsung 850 EVO Series Solid State Drive 1-TB $499.99
- LG GH240 SuperMulti 24x DVD Writer, SATA $24.99
- Kingston HyperX FURY Black 16GB DDR3-1600MHz CL 10 Dual Channel
  4 x 8 GB Total 32 GB RAM $225.98
- AMD FX-6300 Processor 3.5GHz w/ 14MB Cache$144.99
- Asus GeForce GT610 CMS 2GB PCI-E w/ DVI HDMI $69.99
- assembly $40.00
- Warranty ??? $177.99
=
TOTAL $1348.91
ADS for CPU v2 (WHAT IS THAT?) $4.40
GST $67.67
=
GRANT TOTAL:$1420.98

PS. Expensive like for a small box.

Maybe I don't need 32GB or RAM but even 16GB RAM would save me only $112.99

You might be right, maybe I'll add one HDD for backup (good suggestion).
The killer is my 1TB SSD $499.99CAD

there a better choice?

- INWIN BL631 Low Power Micro ATX Case w/300W power supply

- Samsung 850 EVO Series Solid State Drive 1-TB

[gentoo-user] xsane - emial "connection failed"

2015-10-21 Thread thelma
I'm trying to use/setup xsane to email simple document (pdf file)

I've set all the parameters in xsane - preference - setup: email
correct but I still get an error:
SMTP connection failed

I'm using port 25 on mail.shaw.ca
so there is no authentication and the mail should be accepted.

sending mail from command line using "mailto" works; so xsane shouldn't
have a problem sending mail.

I can not find any logs for xsane program.

I had a different experience with Samsung printers. I bought one model
and it had a big bold letters that it works with Linux.
When I try to install printer driver, it was impossible. It came with
some kind of script the relied on an old/obsolete library so it was
impossible to install it.

On Fedora, script installs brother printer base on Brother source
web-page driver, it works perfectly. On Gentoo it is a manual/painful
setup if you doing it the first time.

I didn't mean auto installation, even Fedora doesn't do that.
When I go to add printer the program should be able to go to vendor

After recent upgrade, I've noticed the my network connection auto
configure itself, depend which network I'm connected to. Very
impressive.
Which configuration/program is responsible for it?

Lately I've installed Fedora core on my old eeepc and I very impressed
with the printer installation. Fedora automatically recognized my
Brother HL-5730 printer and installed printer driver for it.

I wish Gentoo would be able to do it as well some day.

I think you are talking about:

In that file I have:

Hmm I don't know which directory you talking about, is it:
https://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/net-misc/nxclient/files/?hideattic=0

I just downloaded: nxclient-3.5.0.7.ebuild
and have only two files in:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1162 Sep 6 17:21 Manifest

I removed: media-libs/jpeg
and emerged libjpeg-turbo

I think it worked, I changed in: nxclient-3.5.0.7.ebuild
...
SRC_URI="http://download.vrdc.cornell.edu/extras/other/nxclient-3.5.0-7.x86_64.tar.gz";

RDEPEND="dev-libs/expat
>=dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8
media-libs/audiofile
media-libs/libjpeg-turbo
...

Generated new manifest and it compiled just fine.

This solved the problem with audacity-2.0.5 I had a problem previously; now it
compiles just fine.

Good ideas, thank you.
I'm trying to implement one of this ideas but I have a problem with making
manifest. The nxclient-3.5.0.7.ebuild is not in "attic" but I have a local
copy.
Though, I can not "manifest" the ebuild it can not be found:
nxclient-3.5.0-7.x86_64.tar.gz
ebuild /usr/local/portage/net-misc/nxclient/nxclient-3.5.0.7.ebuild manifest

Layman -L
doesn't list it either

Various places have it, like:
https://baobabmaster.unige.ch/download/linux/

I downloaded and copy the file to: /usr/portage/distfiles
but system still try to download the file when I try to make ebuild ...
manifest"

It seems to me Alan solution:
emerge -avC libjpeg-turbo
emerge -av1 media-libs/jpeg:0 media-libs/jpeg:62

It will come to hunt me. It allow me to keep going with upgrades as I
couldn't find any better solution.

Currently I have media-libs/jpeg installed in two slots:
media-libs/jpeg-6b-r12:62
media-libs/jpeg-8d-r1:0

I can not get rid of "media-libs/jpeg-6b-r12" due to dependency
net-misc/nxclient-3.5.0.7 (=media-libs/jpeg-6*)

I need "nxclient" for now until I find better solution.

According to: equery d media-libs/jpeg-8d-r1
 * These packages depend on media-libs/jpeg-8d-r1:
virtual/jpeg-0-r2 (>=media-libs/jpeg-8d-r1:0

Maybe I could uninstall jpeg-8d-r1 as only "virtual/jpeg-0-r2" depends
on it.

Apology about it. I was under impression it might look cleaner (less
clapper if I post a link to complete log).

Yes, that was correct hint.
Fernando was correct, running:
media-libs/tiff
perl-cleaner --all

seem to solve this problem.

[gentoo-user] slot conflict - xfce-base/libxfce4util

2015-09-05 Thread thelma
I'm confused sometimes as to these slot conflicts, eg. I'm getting:

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

xfce-base/libxfce4util:0

  (xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.10.1:0/0::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
=xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.12:= required by
(xfce-base/libxfce4ui-4.12.1-r2:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

How do I go about unmerging/selecting one of them?

Thanks Dale for explanation.
I have 8GB RAM and with fstab:
tmpfs /var/tmp/portagetmpfs defaults 0 0

it creates 3.9Gb ram disk but that is not enough for firefox I think my default
setup was OK with:
/etc/portage/package.env
/etc/portage/env/notmpfs.conf

I have 8Gb RAM and this setup I had was to compile larger ebuilds like: firefox
and thunderbird

tmpfs /var/tmp/portagetmpfs defaults 0 0

The above in fstab creates
tmpfs 3.9G 39M 3.9G 1% /var/tmp/portage

When I removed my setup with
/etc/portage/package.env
/etc/portage/env/notmpfs.conf

Firefox complains it can not compile as there is not enough disk space:
* Checking for at least 4 GiB disk space at
"/var/tmp/portage/www-client/firefox-38.2.0/temp" ...

What is my best option? Go back to previous setup with package.env notmpfs.conf
or increase tmpfs to 5Gb eg:
tmpfs /var/tmp/portagetmpfs rw,size=5G 0 0

I had this configuration already set:
/etc/portage/env/notmpfs.conf
PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp/notmpfs"

/etc/portage/package.env
mail-client/thunderbird notmpfs.conf
www-client/firefox notmpfs.conf

What was missing was only directory:
/var/tmp/notmpfs

I'll remove "tmpfs" from fstab

[gentoo-user] /var/tmp/notmpfs - does not exist

2015-09-04 Thread thelma
When I try to run emerge on my system I get:

...
 * Your boot partition was not mounted at /boot, so it will be automounted for
you.
 * Files will be installed there for grub to function correctly.
>>> Running pre-merge checks for dev-db/mysql-5.6.26
>>> Running pre-merge checks for net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.4.9-r200

The directory specified in your PORTAGE_TMPDIR variable, '/var/tmp/notmpfs',
does not exist. Please create this directory or correct your PORTAGE_TMPDIR
setting.

my fstab:
...
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
shm /dev/shmtmpfs
defaults,nodev,nosuid,mode=1777 0 0
tmpfs /var/tmp/portagetmpfs defaults 0 0

ll /var/tmp/
total 0
drwxrwxrwt 4 portage portage 80 Sep 4 23:04 portage

Do I need to create dir: /var/tmp/notmpfs ?
My other systems did not show any such message.

Keeping in world only:
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

will keep the newest kernel in world and unmerge 3.10.17 the one I'm using
