 Wonderful application it is... ;)

maybe because it is using a failsafe? Just in case the sound daemon might not 
be running. Would be the sensible thing to do.

Or is it necessary to convince KDE's phonon to use jack? I guess then
the VLC backend is worth a try as it supports jack.
