Re: [gentoo-user] My laptop is freaking me out.
Ian K wrote: Hi there. My new laptop (Toshiba A70) is seriously weirding me out. It seems to be turning off (randomly?) while in KDE. I cannot distinguish any patterns uptime-wise, nor is it an actual power failure. (Nothing else dies, battery prescence is confirmed with hardware lighting, and this lighting indicates a full charge. I also see no real connections between what I am doing when the computer turns off. Once, I was browsing the web in Firefox, and tonight, I was playing around with the XScreensaver settings. I have noticed, that it seems to only happen while in KDE, although Im not 100% sure. Also, I have the KDE laptop battery monitor set to do *nothing* if the battery should reach a warning or critical power value. This has happened to be about 6 times over the last few days. I also just got KDE emerged, so I can say its been happening probably since it has been up. I have left it on for extended amounts of time in the regular CLI though, without any problems. I can't really think of anything else to say, but I should mention that it **seems** to do a safe shutdown, but Im not sure. The power is cut rather instantly, and I am not swished off into a system reboot message. When I start it up again, ReiserFS claims the file system is clean, and goes on to replay the journal as usual. Do any of you have any thoughts on this? Thanks a lot! Could it be simply that the processor is overheating and shutting down to protect itself? My Dell laptop used to do the same thing 6 months after I bought it. I took a can of compressed air to the vents and a pile of dust shot out. Now it works fine! Maybe install a CPU monitoring tool (e.g. gkrellm2) and keep an eye on the temperature? I blow mine out weekly and I keep the rear elevated to increase airflow. It does it mostly when compiling. I've been known to put it in front of the ac when running emerge -uavD world. Haven't tried the fridge, yet. There is also a static issue with some A70 and A75 laptops. Unfortunately, your symptoms sound like it. I'd go to toshiba support and check it out if you are still under warranty. A lot of people have had this problem. By touching the speaker covers you can lock up your machine. After this happens a few times, you get symptoms like you've described. They replace the cover of your laptop and sometimes the motherboard. Long thread about it: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=39467 The toshiba link was to long to paste but here is the gist Applicable Models: Satellite A75-S206, A75-S2061, A75-S226, A75-S276, A75-S2761, A75-S2762, A70-S256, A70-S2561, A70-S249, A70-S2491, A70-S259, A70-S2591, A75-S209, A75-S2091, A75-S229, A75-S2291, A75-S2292, A70-S2492ST, M35X-S149, M35X-S1491, M35X-S109, M35X-S309, M35X-S3091, M35X-S329, M35X-S3291, M35X-S349, M35X-S3491, M30X-S1592ST, M30X-S1593ST, M35X-S1492, A75-S211, A75-S2111, A75-S231, A75-S2311, A75-S2293, M35X-S111, M35X-S161, M35X-S1611, M35X-S311 On some Satellite A70/A75 and M30X/M35X models, the computer may lock up (hang) or restart, immediately after the computer is touched. There will be no charge for the testing or for any repairs. For further information about how to arrange for shipment to and service at the Toshiba Notebook Depot or a Toshiba ASP in your area please call 1-800-457-. I'd return it if you can. Did you spot any warranty info like that for my corner of the world? :) About monitoring the temperature, can an A70 do that? How would I set that up? GKrellm gives me the standard info, but I dont know how to get temperature monitoring info showing. Thanks!! My gkrellm2 has a checkbox to display the temperature under Configuration Builtins Sensors Setup Temperatures. Otherwise, you can manually get a reading by doing: # cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature If that doesn't work, you might need to check that ACPI is enabled in your kernel (particularly the Thermal zone option).
