However, I am not smart enough to know how to use/apply this patch. Can someone clarify for me please? I've never done such a process before. Try this sequence: 1. Start xterm. 2. type cd /usr/portage/x11-terms/gnome-terminal. 3. nano files/gconf.patch. 4. Switch to browser, select the lines of the patch (everything from below the equal-sign-line to html horizontal separator). 5. Middle-click xterm window should paste the patch there. 6. Switch to xterm, Ctrl+O, Enter (Save). Ctrl+X (Quit). 7. nano gnome-terminal-XXX.ebuild where XXX is desired version number. 8. Put the following line inside braces below gnome_src_unpack line: epatch ${FILESDIR}/gconf.patch 9. Ctrl+O, Enter (Save). Ctrl+X (Quit). 10. repoman manifest. 11. emerge gnome-terminal Congrats, you've created your own patched ebuild ;) Homework: put it into local overlay so it won't be wiped on sync. -- Mike Kazantsev // fraggod.net signature.asc Description: PGP signature

I would assume gnome-terminal is eating your ctrl-a ;-) you can have a look on your settings with: ssty -a if ^A is set up to an action. By the way: on my host screen is working as expected in gnome-terminal. Steffen

I don't know anything about gnome-terminal, but it may be grabbing keystrokes. There is probably a config file somewhere in your home directory, or in a system directory that might throw light on the matter. Have you asked on the screen mailing list -- others may have run into the same problem. Roger

I think that's because the remote machines do not understand this kind of terminal, and so fall back to 'dumb' or something like that. What's the problem with leaving TERM=xterm when under gnome-terminal? ... Isn't this a fine standard for all X terminals? Is there a gnome-terminal configuration somewhere that lets me set the TERM that I want? I'll have a look at gconf. gnome-terminal is actually doing things correctly at last. Only xterm should use TERM=xterm. (except if your NOT-xterm terminal supports _everything_ that xterm supports. And pretty much no one does. xterm is probably the most capable terminal and definitely not a least common denominator.) Sure it causes problems as most machines don't have proper settings for all possible terminals, but that is a bug on that system. You can add the settings yourself (in your home directory). Happily, I can't remember _how_ you did this. ;-) I read a good document on this issue somewhere but can't seem to locate it. Very likely a pointer to it is somewheres in this list's archives.
