However, due to a bug, OpenSSH 4.4-4.5 + OpenSSL 0.9.8e create bad packets (PuTTY is great for bug testing SSH :P). To use SSH, add the following line to /etc/portage/package.use: =net-misc/openssh-4.6_p1_r1 -ldap. Most probably a package specific setup routine that makes a connection to the X server -- for whatever reason. The environment is probably modified at that point (e.g. by portages sandbox), so it doesn't work with a forwarded X connection.
