No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Did you merge hplip with USE=scanner?  (emerge -pv hplip)

Does /etc/sane.d/dll.conf contain the line hpaio?

Bingo!  Works fine now.  I am hoping this is a new use flag.  I
*really* don't believe I removed any use flags from make.conf.
