+1. Waiting to synchronise major releases may have in the past been an
impediment to regular releases. A bit more wiggle room will help.

[Geoserver-devel] Possible REST security bug in 2.2-RC2

2012-08-16 Thread Michael Romero

Hello all,

I am trying to configure REST security in 2.2-RC2 and I believe I found
a bug with the GET requests using curl. I can't make anonymous GET
request or setup GET with any other role besides ADMIN. I figured I'd
ask before creating a JIRA issue in case I'm missing something.

Here are the steps I followed:

I downloaded 2.2-RC2-bin and started it up (increased heap space) with
all default configuration. Then I created a workspace using:

curl -v -u admin:geoserver -XPOST -H 'Content-type: text/xml' -d
"test" "$base_url/workspaces"

The workspace was created as expected. Then I got the workspace using:

curl -v -u admin:geoserver -XGET -H 'Accept: text/xml'
"$base_url/workspaces/test"

The workspace came back successfully. So far so good. Next, I changed
the rest.properties to anonymous for all methods:

/**;GET=IS_AUTHENTICATED_ANONYMOUSLY

/**;POST,DELETE,PUT=IS_AUTHENTICATED_ANONYMOUSLY

I created a new workspace without credentials:

curl -v -XPOST -H 'Content-type: text/xml' -d "test2"
"$base_url/workspaces"

The workspace was created as expected. Then I tried to get the workspace
without credentials:

curl -v -XGET -H 'Accept: text/xml' "$base_url/workspaces/test2"

I got a 404 with the message "No such workspace: test2" (see
stacktrace.txt attached). So then I figured I'd set up a role for my
loader scripts and use that to access the REST API instead of using
ADMIN. I created a role called LOADER with no parent and a user,
loader1, with role LOADER and no group. I changed the rest.properties to:

/**;GET=LOADER

/**;POST,DELETE,PUT=LOADER

I then created a new workspace with the new user:

curl -v -u loader1:password -XPOST -H 'Content-type: text/xml' -d
"test3" "$base_url/workspaces"

The workspace was created as expected. The POST no longer works with the
admin user, as expected. Then I tried to get the workspace with the
loader1 user:

curl -v -u admin:geoserver -XGET -H 'Accept: text/xml'
"$base_url/workspaces/test3"

I got a 404 with the message "No such workspace: test3" (same stack trace).

Note: I did a reload or restarted GeoServer between each change to
rest.properties

Thanks,
Michael

2012-08-16 Thread Chris Holmes
Yeah, no concern here, I'm +1 to just go for it with 8.1. My 8.0.1 was just
an alternate suggestion, I'm definitely good with 8.1.

[Geoserver-devel] [jira] (GEOS-5273) external SLD reference in getMap allows access to host filesystem because of external entities

2012-08-16 Thread Rudi Hochmeister (JIRA)

Rudi Hochmeister
 created GEOS-5273

external SLD reference in getMap allows access to host filesystem because of external entities

Issue Type:

Bug

Affects Versions:

2.1.3

Assignee:

Andrea Aime

Components:

Security

Created:

16/Aug/12 8:08 AM

Description:

With a prepared external SLD Rule, it is possible to access sensitive system files in /etc on the host machine and display it as an image.
For instance, one can get access to /etc/passwd, but I will not post this particular getMap request here. I can't post the actual request here, because it affects our public service. I will mail the request to a geoserver developer if requested.

It is also possible to drop a XML Bomb, but this is another story.

Disabling use of external entities would be solution if it can be done.

Environment:

linux java6

Project:

GeoServer

Priority:

Major

Reporter:

Rudi Hochmeister

Mind, with the "time boxed releases" proposal approved we don't do releases
based on contents
anymore, so the fact that there is new functionality is not relevant for a
point release.
The only worry I have is that we're going to make 8.1 after just 15 days
from 8.0 instead of a month,
that's all

I would just handle this with our head up, if it really is just a patch with
bug fixes in it then we up the patch.
If we have back ported new functionality, or additional API, then a point
release is warranted.
