Unless I am misunderstanding you, this is what we do currently - branch on
the RC. What are you actually suggesting here?

I never knew this was possible, it's sort of "doubly qualified" that way.
Don't think it made sense, probably worked
by accident.

This sounds like a bug, but it's likely something specific to your
installation, these works for example (without authentication):

I checked the code in master (2.14.x) ... and I can't really tell if this is a regression or not, I 
suggest you to try with an older GeoServer version and see if it works.


Some pointers for GeoServer code:

1. the fully qualified layer name is no more recognized, so it is not
