Wow, while I've seen minor issues running on JDK 7 I haven't seen any
problem loading styles or connecting to shapefile/postgis.
As said, when I start GeoServer on my dev machine it often runs on Oracle
JDK 7.

I'm setting up a build server on OpenJDK 7 ( http://aaime.no-ip.org/jenkins/)
and fixing issues on trunk as I find them, right now it's still not building
but I believe I'm one patch away from making it work.

I've also been working on making the GeoServer build work at all on Windows,
that is already a reality, again, on trunk only (the fact that we build
successfully
or not on Windows has a weak correlation to the fact we can run on it at
all,
often problems are in the tests themselves).

I guess JDK7 + Windows might be a combination that causes even more
trouble...

Cheers
Andrea

Re: [Geoserver-users] [bulk]: WARNING Geoserver can damage your computer/server

2012-11-12 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies
Nahum,

CentOS (and other Red Hat derived distributions) run a daily prelink
cron job:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prelink

This (or normal system updates) almost certainly explains the changes
you see in libc.

A nonprivileged user will not be able to modify your libc.

JDK 7 is not supported. GeoServer failures with JDK 7 are expected.

If you see system corruption, you likely have a hardware problem. (This
is now off-topic for this list.)

Please conduct the following hardware tests:

(1) Run Memtest86+ for 24 hours to test for bad RAM. This utility should
be present as a syslinux boot option on all Red Hat installation media:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memtest86

(2) Run mprime/Prime95 for 24 hours
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime95#Use_for_stress_testing
You can obtain mprime (64-bit Linux) here:
http://mersenne.org/freesoft/

The command under Linux for stress testing is "mprime -t".

If your computer can run "mprime -t" for 24 hours without errors, your
computer is "prime stable". This only tests your motherboard, CPU and
RAM. If you see errors, it means that your hardware is unreliable.

Also install smartmontools and use smartctl to run HDD self-tests.

Kind regards,
Ben.

2012-11-12 Thread cmaul
Hello Nahum,

I have put the Oracke JDK 1.7u9, which is the same as yours on (WinXP,
geoserver2.2/2.1.3, geowebcache1.3R1, geowebcache1.2.6 Tomcat
7.027/Tomcat6.0.35 all on Oracle 10, Oracle ArcSDE9.2 and PostGIS) and yes
you are right it does not work, none of them worked. Start-up fails with
absurd errors about not being able to read certain SRS, SDE connections fail
or if it starts SLD aren't read and the map turns up white on white
background and the entire computer is slow as a wet week, etc. I didn't
investigate the various errors as I needed it working and thus hadn't the
time to do so.

Not much of a surprise as Geoserver wants a JDK6. BUT on deletion of the
JDK7 and all its traces everything went back to normal!

I am not disputing your hardware problems, but I think we are dealing with
two unrelated events here, which happened to occur close to each other.

Cheers

Christian

Found It!

Seems to jdk 1.7 update 6 to 1.7 update 9 corrupt in some way glibc, I made
a md5 checksum on all my library files and after setup with those jdks and
after running geowebcache in several layers I noted changes glibc, with a
diff the chechksum of glibc change.

Odd. :(

Do you know any tool to investigate such changes?.

Thanks in advance.

Btw, "faulty hardware" does not necessarily mean the computer itself,
motherboards
often "fry" due to power issues, it may be that GeoServer is loading the

Just noticed now that you're using JDK7. GeoServer is not tested on such
JDK,
in fact we know some minor functionality does not work properly with it.

That said, I've been running GeoServer for development purposes on JDK 7
since a few months ago, using Oracle JDK 7, on a Ubuntu 64 bit box,
and have seen no issue so far

There is not the case. That was the first ting I thougth, but all three
computers were damaged at diferento locations, seems to be oracle jdk,
right now I'm running authopsy.

I was running geoserver as a normal user not superuser.

The linux version I'm using is CentOS x86_64.

With FreeBSD there is no problem.

Re: [Geoserver-users] [bulk]: WARNING Geoserver can damage your computer/server

2012-11-12 Thread Stefan Engelhardt (HBT)
I am sorry but I can not imagine, that a piece of normal software can damage
your pc. I first would search for the problem in your hardware environment for
problems, perhaps to warm or to high voltage.

The exception

Subject: [bulk]: [Geoserver-users] WARNING Geoserver can damage your
computer/server

Hello All.

I've found that geoserver under some very rare circunstances, can
render your server/pc unable to run geoserver again.

Check this:

* Geoserver only distribute layers from postgresql/postgis
* Begins to loose connections with postgresql.
*   Crash geoserver.
* Even reinstalling the server don't work (Linux OS, JAVA, TOMCAT
from fresh sources).

I have One HP server ProLiant DL300 who only replacing the motherboard
worked again. Also have a workstation Dell Precision m6600 which I replaced the
motherboard.

Today it damaged my PC with motherboard Intel and Core i5

I think the server and the workstation where damaged at factory, but
today it damaged a brand new PC.

All three computer get damaged in diferent locations.

I suspect the culprit is jdk 1.7 and geoserver trigers the problem.

Here are the exception even if you reinstall the OS and software from
fresh sources.
