Ideas there are, but we need a very solid funding to get there because we
need to alter the very interfaces of the java classes accessing rasters.

In the meantime, the best solution is to use REST config to automate the
loading of all that data. Even with a "directory of geotiffs", would you
really
want to manually setup 5500 layers?
