There is a tiny problem. I can hold the ruler _near_ my screen but I
cannot use it to measure the screen because it is too big and won't
 touch the surface.

So now I have to look for _another_ ruler. We could mandate that all
 Gimp users buy 19" monitors?

I experienced the same problems: on some monitors, I cannot use my
ruler accurately because the ruler is too big and the edges of the
monitor prevent me from putting it on the surface.

On an old monitor that is badly curved, I could touch the surface with
one end of the ruler but the other end was several centimeters away
from the surface because the ruler was not flexible enough.

Using A4 paper would be a nice solution because it can easily follow
the surface of curved screens. Also, if you have a small monitor and
an A4 sheet will not fit (in landscape mode), then you can fold it in
two and you get A5, which can also be measured easily without loosing
much precision. For more information on standard paper sizes, see
this excellent resource:

Are credit cards of a standard size?

Should be. I wouldn't trust sticking them into a machine otherwise.

Using a credit card as a standard object for calibration is not a good
idea. Students in high school (for e.g.) that want to use the GIMP are very
unlikely to have credit cards.
