http://www.levien.com/gimp/jargon.html:

 * eek An expression of shock. Even better is to make Burrito eek. He
does it so nicely. Derived from "Eeek, a German", the standard
   greeting whenever jtl logs on.

also with a varying amount of "e"s... :)

I suspect that this is something that is basically never shown in the
UI, don't bother too much with it.

Bye,
Simon

Ok about EEK (thanks), but then ... what is Burrito ? This seems to be
a Mexican food, how can a food have an expression of shock ? Or is this
some cartoon character ? (this appears to be too cultural-dependant
for successful internationalization)

(though I retained the "don't bother too much with it" part)

http://www.levien.com/gimp/jargon.html:
 * Burrito One of the #gimp's two beloved bots. Burrito is based on the
same code as Xachbot, and is run by yosh. One of Burrito's most
important extensions is its ability to eek. It also has a database of
   2-letter country codes.

Yeah, cultural-specific, but the culture is the Gimp IRC-Channel
culture. The text of that error message is probably not really useful to
translate since it is never shown to the user anyway (unless something
is very broken in the Gimp code)...

2008-06-02 Thread Bill Skaggs
For what it's worth, in cartoons, "eek" represents the cry a woman
makes when she sees a mouse running across her kitchen floor.

Yes, that's sexist. Sorry, but that's the association that Americans have.

(By the way, there is a famous Reggae singer who calls himself Eek-a-Mouse.)

Just leave it untranslated. No user will ever see this string. In trunk
it was already changed a while ago.
