More likely the problem is that your copy of po/Makefile.in.in is not
uptodate. You can check that using the command 'svn status'.

This file used to be overwritten by glib-gettextize (which is run by
autogen.sh). And the version you have then does not have the proper
flags for the xgettext which that are needed to make msgctxt work. I
have now tried to fix this problem in trunk.

This is probably because there is bug in your version of intltools or
that version is too old.

For instance, the version from Ubuntu 8.04.1 doesn't deal with msgctxt
reliably. It's very selective about which messages to put into a PO
file and which not.

However, when I run an update on any of the other .po's, it works fine
(no 'Colorsize' message any more, 'Colorize'). Strange.

[Gimp-developer] Po-files in SVN have a strange problem

2008-08-04 Thread David Gowers
Hello,

As I was working on Esperanto translation for gimp, I noticed that it
(eo.po).. and the following .po files (in /po/ directory),
have a strange problem with a message.

pl
fr
ru
ja
lt
oc

One or two messages (the english part) refer to 'Colorsize' where they
should refer to 'Colorize'
(as in 'save colorize settings' and 'export colorize settings').

I assume this was caused by typos in the source code, later corrected.
However, when I ran an update, this message was not removed or
replaced by a correct one.. or even left alone while the correct
message was added.
So, perhaps these files need to be manually changed to correct the
message. That's what I did for eo.po (in my local copy)

It is not our job to update the po files. The translators do that (using
intltool) before they start to work on the translations. Or they
download uptodate po files from l10n.gnome.org. The files in SVN only
change when a translators commits an update.

And what you claim is not true. The German translation at least has the
words that you mentioned translated. You probably missed that because
you grepped for the words without mnemonics.

[Gimp-developer] po-files in SVN need updating

2008-07-14 Thread David Gowers
I am currently learning esperanto, and I set GIMP language to
esperanto. Then, I noticed that there were several things
untranslated, which the po file did not even record the original
string for! (ie there is not even a 'msgid' showing the untranslated
message!)
For example
 * File->New ( the submenu New, not 'New...' which is correctly
translated as 'Nova'), along with some of its items.
 * Edit->Modules and Edit->Units
 * Filters->Decor ('Decor' remains untranslated, though its contents
are correctly translated)
 * 'Windows' menu and both of its submenus

These elements are untranslated in all languages due to this; none of
the po files cover any of the above, according to grep.

It looks to me like nobody remembered to update the .po files after
the menu reorganization. (or is the reorganization still ongoing?)
Is this an oversight or is it not the right time to do that yet?

yes, a non issue.
 The dead address was the e-mail for the pt_BR coordinator's e-mail. I
found his up to date e-mail in another free software related list
(and warned him that the GTP page should be updated).

I am now in touch with the guys at the pt_BR gtp team, and I will be
able to help there with the Gimp.

I read in the thread that the GTP contact address is dead, if this is
the case and it was mentioned in the README we should have changed it.
However the broken address seems to come from somewhere else so this is
a non-issue for us.

Does GTP have a list or something?
I think I have heard from this Godoy in a local free-software list, I
will check.
Meanwhile I've written the guy listed in the GIMP pt_BR file - that
mail did not seen to fail, and I will possibly get a reply.

You missed an important point here: You should coordinate your
translation effort with the GTP (GNOME Translation Project). Please
do not start working on translations (new or existing ones) without
getting in contact with the translation team for the particular

Sure. README.i18n contains the basics of how to use gettext.

The inaccurate Rough Guide is like this... you copy an existing
po template file to one named after your localisation, translate
the messages (being careful to use UTF-8), add the po files to CVS,
and when you have po files for each of the localised directories
(the dirs starting with po), add the language to ALL_LINGUAS in
Makefile.am

The template files are .pot, and .mo files are the actual files
used when localising - they're the hashmaps that map a message
onto its localised version. Or something.

> I usually run everything in English here, but I was browsing the
> pt_BR.po, and it is looking a little worse than if the translations

If the language already exists, you can ignore the bits above,
and just start translating the messages directly in pt_BR.po in
the various directories, and the pt_BR.mos will be generated
automatically when you make.

Cheers,
Dave.

[Gimp-developer] PO files

2003-09-16 Thread Joao S. O. Bueno

Can someone point me to a "howto" or explaination on how are the files
firstly generated?

I usually run everything in English here, but I was browsing the
pt_BR.po, and it is looking a little worse than if the translations
were done by an authomatic engine.

I'd guess no one at the connectiva team listed in the file is a GIMP
user at all.
