I'm afraid turning off color management didn't make the slightest
difference...

I've also just confirmed that I get the same artifacts on my notebook at
work, so that's 3 64-bit Windows 7 machines with horrible panning
performance... :(

By the way - is it somehow possible to install the 32-bit version of
GIMP 2.8.x on a 64-bit system with the new combined Windows installer?

Nah, I'm just following the news closely and read some comments here and
there.
One of those comments was "Partha we love you", so I guess you aren't a bad

Kurt,

Someone reported for my builds that turning off color management
helped. However, for photographs I would not want to turn off color
management. They did say they were OK with my 2.7.5 build

[Gimp-developer] Slow, artifact-prone redraw when panning in 2.8.0-RC1

2012-04-10 Thread Kurt Pruenner
Hi,

I just downloaded Jernej Simončič's windows build of 2.8.0-RC1 and found
that both on my tablet running Windows 7 with Intel HD3000 graphics as
well as on my desktop, also running Windows 7 but with an ATI Radeon
5870, panning around an image looks really weird once you pan too fast:

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/6317/gimppanartifacts.jpg

A screenshot doesn't really do it justice, though, so I've also made a
~30 second screen capture video:

http://youtu.be/gpARpvEDH0Y?hd=1

I'm just holding down the middle mouse button and panning the 100%
zoomed image around.

The same thing also happened using one of Partha's recent 2.7.x builds.

Does anyone else get similar results? Panning in 2.6.x was smooth as
butter for me... :/

2012-04-10 Thread Partha Bagchi
Looks like Gez has a direct line to who knows who. :)

Yes, my builds were uploaded to Graphicall.org by one of the users. I
have looked into these reports and they are all false. One user
reported running the build through a lot of so called detectors. Some
of them claim there are trojans in other parts of Gimp as well such as
twain.exe. In any case, as the other poster suggested, perhaps the
official builds guarantees that the builds pass all detectors tests
and so please feel free to delete this version and use the official
version.

I have a write-up on this on my website and there is a whole lot of
discussion on Flickr as well.

Thanks,
Partha

John:
That build is from Partha. I'm pretty sure that it's a false positive,
since he has been contribuiting with builds for some time and nobody had
problems with his builds. Just in case, contact him and ask him about this
warning.

As I mentioned above, you shouldn't report problems with unofficial builds
to devs, and this is exactly the case.

Anyway, there's a build of 2.8 RC1 available here:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
as Alexia just pointed out.

[Gimp-developer] OpenCL support in GEGL is almost there

2012-04-10 Thread Victor Oliveira
Hello everyone,

I'm a GEGL developer and I've been working since last year implementing
OpenCL support in GEGL. We have for now:

- An API to write OpenCL point and area operations
- A way to share image data between operations in the GPU (so we don't have
to bring the image back and forth the CPU for each operator)
- +20 GEGL operations have OpenCL support already
- It's fast
- It's been included in GIMP 2.8RC1

Darktable has its own OpenCL support code (which is pretty good, by the
way). I'd like to start talks to avoid work repetition in both programs and
to make an argument pro-GEGL use in Darktable :)

bye!

Yes, several.
a) It's not one of our semi-official builds you get from
gimp-win.sourceforge.net, go get one from there.
b) Contact whoever provided that build, sometimes there are false
positives. However, since its a build from god knows where, id take
the warning seriously. Malware distributors just love packing their
crap into installers of well known free apps.

Re: [Gimp-developer] academic references for GIMP

Different academic institutions have different citation standards; that
particular
question belongs to the questioner's institution, (AFAIK).

they are waiting for v2.8 to be announced.

I think Nicolas Robidoux could help you with some references regarding
GEGL's samplers, and one of pippin's operations got a scientific
coverage last year in some Norwegian magazine or something. You can
also dig something at http://www.siox.org/details.html, and I'm pretty
