[Gimp-developer] digital painting on GIMP and the paint dynamics

2021-12-10 Thread americo gobbo via gimp-developer-list

Hi All,
My current interest in GIMP assets is flipped from brushes to paint
dynamics and tool presets. The traditional or known as main assets
(brushes, patterns, palettes, gradients, etc.), for me, this concept
must be studied more.
The idea is to improve the paint dynamics and write some articles about
using them with tool presets and a minimal brush set.

The set of traditional assets on this research will be minimal because I
want to have an approach impartial or made to all, if it is possible
and, more focused on the painting characteristics of each technique ;)

I hope that developers, collaborators, artists and all interested in the
digital painting topic could help me in this work, with suggestions,
links, testing the assets, etc.

To organize all the paint dynamics and tool presets "ready to use", will
be necessary a plugin for this scope on GIMP. In this sense, I am
talking with Joao Bueno. I saw, also, a recent discussion about this
topic here some days ago.

Grazie a tutti,
Americo

[Gimp-developer] Motivations/Scopes of the my GIMP 2.10 Brush Set

2018-03-30 Thread Americo Gobbo
erify them during the process.
Ideally, we must think a categorization more transparent or hidden for the
assets on GIMP... and not only based on the alphabetic ordering. Is natural for
all users have criteria more personal, like as favorites... if we think a
spreadsheet is possible to have also ordering things based on our tastes and
needs. At this moment is not possible to have this feature and I have thought a
way to solve this in the GIMP default set and also a manner to harmonize the
future additional sets of other authors.
In my opinion is necessary to have an order on default GIMP set, this is a good
way also to exemplify how is possible to collect and organize assets in an
efficient way. This is not a rule for all users, but I think that GIMP must
have rules to organize their default assets. The users could be adopted or not
these rules as is more natural to them.

Brush Asset Authors Reference
Yet is not possible to add info about author and license of each brush, but I
have thought that is a good idea, in this moment, add this info directly to the
layer of brush. Therefore each brush set of the GIMP 2.10 will be rewritten
adding the info of authors in the own brushes, in my opinion, this avoids the
necessity of a document with reference of authors to each brush. Until this
moment the authors of brush set are:

David Revoy
Elle Stone
GIMP (when was not possible identify the original author).
Gustavo Deveze
Jag (Americo Gobbo)
Johannes Engelhardt
Justin W (Akisu-sama)
L'ubomir Zabadal

Is that a fresh git clone or did you compile in the directory before? Maybe
you used to have libexiv2 installed in/usr/local/ and that was picked up by
autofoo in the past and now it still remembers the old location.

Yes, because them are in another directory: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
So, how is possible resolve this without 'ln -s', also because it does
not work?

Linking libraries around (using ln -s, not ld) is not the solution and a
terrible idea.

Since I don't know how your ld.conf is setup, I am trying to guess where
your shared objects are. Once you find them, instead of relying on the

Perhaps I need modify my setup environment?

[Gimp-developer] Hardness Control on Pencil Tool - Optimization range and their reasons.

2017-07-04 Thread Americo Gobbo

I have tested the hardness on pencil tool and actually is not usable as classic
hardness...The hardness on pencil has the capability to expand the stain... and
this is could be useful to emulate some bristle effects.

To use in this way is necessary to use the range of hardness >= 80. In fact, in
this range is possible to use to modify the shapes of traditional bristle concept
to open or close more or minus the points of bristles.

Now, the full range is really not usable in comfortable way, and mainly, for
nobody raster brush.
To control this in better way is necessary change the range... what is now [80,
100] should become [0, 100].

To see the figures related on this thread see the bug report:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=784519

--
Pencil tool context usages
Pixel-art and drawing/painting with precision
The pencil tool is considered commonly to *Pixel-art* and *drawing*, precision
work and such, but can be used also to *painting*... as is also possible paint
with Clone Tool as I have already demonstrated... or rather I don't see a
convincing reason why for which the Pencil Tool cannot be used to paint.

On Pixel-art, we use hardness = 100 and the raster brushes are adequately thought
for the pixel-art (and for this scope the brush raster are no affected by the
hardness), see the *Figure 1*
[https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=354880]. Also to eventual Color
brushes to *pixel-art*, after my tests, them are usable only above hardness>75,
below this value we have strange effects and blur not usable to this specific
works, see *Figure 2* [https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=354881].
So for the cases, specifically for the *Pixel-art*, the hardness used is equal
100 (but I supposed because I am not an specialist). To drawing and/or to give
precision or details is the same thing, the brush pixel must be hard and don't
have blur effects.

Already in June 2016 I have wrote a email to gimp-developers mailing list with
an idea to cut this feature of the Pencil Tool... the thread was a long
discussion, but in my opinion not focused on my request... well explained by
Elle Stone in her comment here:
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-developer-list/2016-June/msg00123.html

--
Problems with hardness range
To exemplify my idea of usage, I have selected two raster brushes of official
and current brush set, the Bristles 01 and Bristles 03 (Media Set).
The hardness effect on the shape transform it in big black block, quickly, and
this don't have any practical usage to pixel art, but to painting is possible
to think some usage as I am proposing here. The current range is demonstrated
on *Figure 3* [https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=354882] and *Figure
4* [https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=354883].

If the range [0, 100] would be equivalent of current [80, 100] is more easy
control the variations and increase the usage possibilities with many kind of
stains. So, in this case is possible to imagine some creative usage for the
hardness on Pencil Tool and mainly to digital painting to emulate some
characteristics of bristle brushes, mainly (at moment was what I have able to
imagine).

--
Consistency versus Usability
Is clear that to paintbrush, airbrush, eraser and others the current range of
the hardness has a sense and an evident usage... but for the Pencil the case
is completely different... we cannot based on the consistency of the other
painttools to uphold the same range on Pencil Tool.

Is better think in terms of usability or which is the sense to use a tool with
difficult and a short range of usage?
Is clear that is possible to use as is the current status... but with difficult
and not in comfortable way.
Also to control it via dynamics has basically the same problems of control it,
because the curve must be placed in top and with short range of sensibility,
see *Figure 5* [https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=354884].

--
Final considerations
If is not possible adequate the hardness range of Pencil Tool, for something
reasons, I suggest to cut off this feature off Pencil tool and consider
basically what is document on official GIMP manual about this painttool
[https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=767916]. If the choice would be
this, I think that is more interesting clean completely the sliders of
'hardness' and 'force' of the Tool Options dialog.
Thanks
americo

Re: [Gimp-developer] name of the patterns

2017-05-30 Thread Americo Gobbo

Hi,
for all GIMP assets based on raster (brushes and patterns) we have
procedures to create them... in these procedures we have the possibility
to choose a different name to show these assets on the list dialogs.
Would be interesting to have also the possibility to show this alias
name in Title & Status.

I've often contemplated writing a modification that would let you have
a default comment that could have %F (or whatever) for filename and so
on, %W and %H for width and height, as for title and status bar.

It would be expanded on image export if you had not explicitly set a
comment in the image.

Would that help?

[Gimp-developer] Incremental issue behavior

2016-12-10 Thread Americo Gobbo
In the documentation has wrote that if is enable 'incremental' on tool
options, the opacity is full always.

"The incremental check-box does not seems to work as everyone expect. If
it is deactivated (the default value) the maximum effect of a single
stroke is determined by the opacity set in the opacity slider. If the
opacity is set to less than 100, moving the brush over the same spot
will increase the opacity if the brush is lifted in the meantime.
Painting over with the same stroke has no such effect. If Incremental is
active the brush will paint with full opacity independent of the
slider's setting. This option is available for all paint tools except
those which have a “rate” control, which automatically implies an
incremental effect."

So, if you have the paint dynamic with Opacity parameter 'on' this is
not true apparently ;-)
Is possible modeling the behavior of opacity with a different gains...
for instance, if you use an small rate, around ~10, on 'opacity' slider
(tool options).
Then, I am not sure if this is correct or is a secondary effect not
expected... so, this is an emerging feature.

Note that the pencil tool also avoid non-integer brush coordinates, i.e.
the brushes "snap" to whole pixel positions.

Re: [Gimp-developer] Pencil - Tool Options and Hardness

2016-06-21 Thread Americo Gobbo

Hi all,

The Tool Options of the Pencil and Paintbrush are identical... the
unique difference is that Pencil don't have antialiasing... so, hard edges.

This is the concept of Pencil tool... to have, a Paintbrush with a
hard-edge option is an option... but, if you can a tool with
hard-edge... you need also the Hardness disabled... for me it seems a
paradox condition.
The Paintbrush with hard edge, no antialising, is necessary to have the
Hardness disabled... so, when I choose hard-edge option (alias Pencil),
the hardness must appears faded (off).

I prefer to maintain the Pencil... and to cut only the hardness
parameter of tool options... the Pencil tool is a classic. The unique
equivocated option in the tool options is the Hardness.

The idea about, if I have understood well, to have not-antialiasing in
the brush... it seems a bit strange for me, essentially because we can
do it using hard-edge stains... normally I use the Pencil tool to create
these stains. Normally, if you have a hard-edge stain, and you need a
bit more soft stain... we can use the hardness slider and also a curve
in the paint dynamics to control the hardness.

thanks,
americo

This sounds like a great option. As CR says, if the only difference is

[Gimp-developer] Pencil - Tool Options and Hardness

2016-06-15 Thread Americo Gobbo

Hi all,
The Hardness parameter to Pencil Tool is not utilized, but is present in its
Tool Options. Reading the documentation: “The Pencil tool is used to draw free
hand lines with a hard edge. The pencil and paintbrush are similar tools. The
main difference between the two tools is that although both use the same type
of brush, the pencil tool will not produce fuzzy edges, even with a very fuzzy
brush. It does not even do anti-aliasing.”
If I have reason, I suggest delete the hardness Pencil parameter on tool
options, to avoid mistakes/misleading on the UI.
Thanks,

[Gimp-developer] Redesign the current GIMP brush set to 2.10

2015-10-14 Thread Americo Gobbo
some years ago, in 2013... I have begun the process of redesign of all
brushes of GIMP 2.8+. The idea was organize a set to the next GIMP release.

This work was suggested by Guillermo Espertino... I think, that the
Prokoudine knew the project through the my g+ account.

I had, in this period, the support of some artists, in Brazil (Mozart
Couto), Argentina (Gustavo Deveze) and in Slovakia (Lubomir Zabadal).
The project was stopped because I do not have any response...

Recently I have writing about this to Patrick and he suggests me to try
publish something here.
Well the link of the project is here:
https://medium.com/graphic-arts-free-software/official-gimp-brushes-redesign-f723f2f44945

I think interesting to have their opinions and to know if this project is
interesting to GIMP.
If yes, how is possible to organize a group or the tasks around this issue?
Thanks

Thanks Richard, but it seems all OK are to windows... on my linux box the
problem is resolved only without rulers.

I work only on linux, and in this box I've two GIMP, the stable 2.8.14
(otto ppa) and and the 2.9 devel (last git master). My box is ubuntu gnome
14.04.2 - 64-bit. Memory 8Gb, Intel® Core™ i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz × 4,
Gallium 0.4 on AMD CAICOS.

The 2.9 first of the patch of Michael Henning in August 11, was working
well with the rulers.
The 2.8.14 stable - ppa otto, is working well.

Bug 736411 - Ruler updates cause slowdown when painting

We now avoid drawing rulers in the position property setter and use
gtk's region invalidation instead. Previously, we were basically
redrawing the ruler inside the mouse event handler, which is pure evil.

I've made two videos to make a comparison with same conditions - same brush
and paint dynamics.

Thanks Adrian to resolve the .gih velocity parameter.
I need a bit more discussion around the preset bug...[
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731279] that is, in part, a UI
problem.
I think that is possible to resolve it... perhaps a patch: the save button
need use the current values and settings present on Tool Options.
This flow is a bit complex and I think that the last comment that I had is
optimal to understand the problem. Do you have time to discuss it?

[Gimp-developer] Digital Painting and GIMP

2015-05-04 Thread Americo Gobbo
I've noted that the main stream of the discussion is almost all about
Photography.
I'm interested to supply GIMP with some advances and improvement to Digital
Painting. I'm working on the GIMP brushes, statics and mainly the dynamic
brushes since 2007~08.
Some of these brushes are the current stable release and on the git master.
With GIMP 2.8.+ I've began study the paint dynamics to emulate some
difficult techniques like watercolor and other techniques around or with
some impasto quality.
Since 2012~13 with other artists we're beginning study the paint dynamics
and howto build good presets and good brushes... These artists including me
are: Mozart Couto (illustrator and cartoonist, Brazil), Gustavo Deveze
(artist and cartoonist, Argentina), Elias De Carvalho (Illustrator,
Brazil), L'ubomir Zabadal (artist e Art adjunct professor, Nitra
University, Slovakia).
Something around these steps already knew to Prokoudine mainly.
Many of these works and tests I've been publishing on my g+ account...
these is the collections around this theme to GIMP since 2014:
https://plus.google.com/+AmericoGobbo/posts/Xg2FAoELk46

I've promised to Prokoudine the tutorials around the painting techniques
since last year when I've began writing many things to many techniques and
how to use the current tools set to improve the quality of the painting.
All these studies series need of the good presets and a bug around the
workflow of this instance is the great problem if we think to distribute
these presets...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731279

The recent studies around the wet and bloom effect are very interesting and
it is possible only using the .gih brushes + paint dynamic + some tool
options features... you can see here:
https://plus.google.com/+AmericoGobbo/posts/LjjinvWAF8W

Another bug very critical for me is with the velocity parameter of .gih
brushes that don't working. My approach is using also the .gih brushes and
is important this kind brush will be working well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=748472

I wait some note or comment about this and if is possible to resolve these
bugs to think begin to publish the tutorial around painting techniques with
GIMP.

My works and illustrations are all made with GIMP and MyPaint.
Now I'm working and testing many instances on the GIMP git master to all
different approaches around Digital Painting.

http://americogobbo.com.br

The bugs are present in the the 2.8.14 and the current git master.
Thanks.

small video to show the performance of GIMP canvas rotation together Krita
2.9.1 to have a comparison.

Some infos to understand better:
Gimp devel git master installed on ubuntu gnome 14.04.1, i5, 8GB memory.
AMD card with proprietary drivers enabled.

I've noted that on my ambient GIMP has a bit problem to do the fluid canvas
rotation.
Talked with João Bueno, he made the same test on similar hardware
configuration (i5, 8Gb memory), but with a big format, on Fedora KDE with
the two apps and are an optimal and fluid canvas rotation. On João Fedora
KDE box the image test was 3500 x 34900 px, i5 com 8GB, GPU intel and free
driver.
In my case I'm using the AMD video-card Gallium 0.4 on AMD CAICOS with 1Gb
Memory, on Bueno Box he's using the mainboard video chipset of intel.

Well I think that is very critical the relation between GIMP and current
ambient on ubuntu-gnome 14.04.+ and versus card boardproprietary drivers.

How is possible to build an optimal ambient to GIMP on gnome UI using the
opensource free drivers?

Now with the new possibilities of GIMP 2.10 is very important to build an
advices series advices concerning the video card or not, libraries and
minimal requisites to use GIMP with an optimal or ideal performance.

*Other notes about Opencl enable and not on GIMP.*
If the Opencl is enabled, the cpus is used more massive way than Krita with
enable OpenGL on their preferences.

[Gimp-developer] Some tests with Cage Transformation and around Handles and n-handles transformations - comparison with Krita features

2015-03-18 Thread Americo Gobbo
Hi,
I've thought useful to make an simultaneous comparison of the Cage Tool on
Gimp 2.9 (commit ef08e69) and Krita 2.9. The version of Gimp 2.9 devel
unstable is version - commit ef08e69 and Krita the 2.9.0 - ubuntu gnome
14.04.2 | Intel(R) Core(tm)2 Quad CPU Q8400 @ 2.66GHz × 4 | 8Gb Memory | Gallium
0.4 on AMD CAICOS with xorg-driver

I think that the *handles* and *n-handles* transformation an good way to
transform... but the *Cage tool* is a way to resolve many situations...
perhaps mixed with the new transform tools, currently in progress on
*Playground* Stage.

The Cage tool for me is a kind swiss-knife... the current version would be
better with a rotation feature on the area of selected handles.

On the video is possible to see how to works on Krita and how is a bit
difficult to resolve the same task on Gimp with the current selected
handles.
I've noted also that the handles on Handle and n-handles transformations is
a bit difficult to control the single handle... some times the handle is
very sensitive and makes the transformation out control.

On the Krita Warp transformation the handle have an arm extensible to
control the deformation, very interesting way to control the accuracy of
deformation...
