[Gimp-developer] Lua in gegl-0.4.16

Hi,

I'm trying to build gegl-0.4.16 in a PPA. Do we need the lua files in 
/usr/share/gegl-0.4/lua? Is it so I can build a new package e.g. 
gegl-lua but I don't wanna break the debian/ubuntu packaging way.


Any hints?

Removing:

Yep that's on purpose. MyPaint/libmypaint development evolved their

differently.

The library has been versionned already (current libmypaint master is
version 2 though there has been no release yet) and we needed to also
have brushes versionned as well for the above reasons. We also needed
brushes as a separate package (otherwise MyPaint is a dependency of
GIMP!) and finally we needed to make sure of the installation path
(otherwise we have to "guess" and in many cases, the MyPaint tool was
just useless with no brushes available).

For all these reasons, I took the MyPaint current brushes. And I made
a branch to freeze the brushes before all the changes happened. But
the master branch still needs to follow MyPaint master development.

P.S.: also I don't really like that the autogen.sh run configure
myself. It can sometimes be a bother when you want to do VPATH builds

Unless I'm misunderstanding, it sounds like perhaps the GMIC in the 
PPA needs updating?

strikes back. :-D

I am not a dev, please be forgiving.

Compiling last gimp dev version with master babl/gegl gives me this
message and it does not start anymore:



GEGL operation missing!

GIMP requires the GEGL operation "gegl:component-extract".
This operation cannot be found. Check your
GEGL install and ensure it has been compiled
with any dependencies required for GIMP.



Any hint?

Not necessarily - you could decide "no, users of LTS versions where
dependencies are not available aren't going to get the bleeding-edge
development versions of GIMP.

Or you could try to switch to one of the emerging package formats like
AppImage or Flatpak et al and provide 2.9.x this way. This might also
help with having both 2.8.x and 2.9.x available to the users at the same
time, thus maximizing their ability to compare their behavior.


Flatpak, AppImage or Snap aren't options for now. I understand your 
reasons to decide for upstream releases.

metadata comes from, as long as it is not generated by GIMP (in which
case, yes it matters a lot! GIMP should not be able to create files
with broken metadata). Of course, if that's another Free Software
which created the metadata, it would be cool to report a bug there,
but that's still not an issue in GIMP.

The only issue I see in GIMP here is that broken metadata should not
be an export-stopper since it's a data bug which is easily catchable
and bypassed (by removing the wrong metadata).

At home in Xenial I exported your picture with save comment.
The above error occurred.
Hmm.

I took a look at the comment field exactly the exif:ImageDescription: It 
contains an invalid UTF-8 string.

After replacing the picture comment content with Gimp's standard one - 
valid UTF-8, I think - I could export your picture without any problem.

I guess it's a bug regarding the comment string and/or character set 
handling. Maybe a wrong character set was using in the

Registry.gimp.org is down for the count.

I was thinking recently about some ideas for a possible replacement.
Mostly thinking along the lines of what made the registry work well for
folks.

In the rest of this email, I'll use the term "asset(s)" to refer to things
like plug-ins, scripts, or brushes/gradients/curves/other assets.

Some essential functionality based on the old registry drupal instance:

1. Upload/Download assets for GIMP.
2. Describe the asset (usually by the uploader).
3. Comment on the assets.

This was handled previously by using drupal, which treated each entry as a
post/node that included the ability to upload files, write about the files
as a post, and had comment threads below it.

Keeping this functionality would be good, I think.  The ability to post an
asset is a given, but the ability to interact around it helps foster the
community (and provides nice feedback for the authors).

 From those thoughts, what would be nice to have in a replacement:

1. Provide at least the same previous functionality (as listed above).
2. Managed or easier to manage and keep updated.
3. Easier account management.
4. Collaborative environment for shared assets
5. Support possible GIMP integration in the future (one-click asset
install?).

Initially, I had thought Github might be a good option for this but given
its closed-source nature decided to investigate something like GitLab
instead.

I like this idea personally due to some nice infrastructure:

1. The service is hosted + managed (and available as Free Software just in
case we felt we needed to break out and host it ourselves).
2. The service integrates OAuth sign-in using a few different account types
(lowers barrier to entry to participate).
 a. they use accounts, Google, Twitter, Github, or bitbucket accounts
for sign-in.
3. Projects maintain all the git-goodness for control and tracking
4. Projects created as a git project can have a full description/README
along with issue tracking integrated in the site

So, we can fulfill the original registry functionality and get the added
benefit of a git infrastructure for those wanting to contribute, user
accounts using OAuth to make it easy to participate, and the ability to do
some interesting things (git submodules).

In speaking with Jehan about this, we should also consider what might be
needed to support the ability to install assets from within GIMP in the
future easily.


Organization
=

Jehan suggested that each script/plugin/asset have it's own git repo.
This would be handy, particularly if script authors did this as well (as it
considerably eases the inclusion of external repos as submodules).
However, akk points out that many folks don't (won't?) organize their repos
in this way (it gets a little... unwieldy pretty quickly if you have many
scripts).

I'd like some input on what would make the most sense or work best for
possible organization of repos.

I was also thinking that we could include some simple metadata in both any
script files and the README.md files as a means to possibly help parsing
relevant information for automated inclusion at a later date (GIMP plug-ins
installer type of idea).


Curation
==

Initially I was thinking that curating the scripts for inclusion would be
important.  It's certainly possible for a smaller subset of all of the
available scripts from the registry now to pick out ones that we use and
check that they're not malicious and properly tagged/included.  For
instance, there's a handful of scripts that I personally find myself using
often and can help validate/curate for inclusion.  I don't mind doing more
as needed.


I just wanted to get a discussion started about how we might consider
moving forward on something like this.  I think the scripts/plug-ins are
important enough to users that it would be good to try and get something up
and running soon.

I have started experimenting with including submodules from other author
repos and how it might look here:

I'm just try to build current packages in my Ubuntu PPA. It takes some 
time.
I hope this helps. I added some dirty patches in order ti builld the 
whole stack.

This commit leads to a wrong gegl module search path.

starting Gimp 2.9.1


OS: Ubuntu Linux 14.10 64 bit.

Hi, folks,

after succesful building Gimp 2.9 in my Ubuntu PPA and starting Gimp I 
saw this:


GEGL operation missing!

GIMP requires the GEGL operation gegl:seamless-clone.
This operation cannot be found. Check your
GEGL install and ensure it has been compiled
with any dependencies required for GIMP.

I think someone forget to commit the last gegl changes in git.

commit 3ef1ad8126829a97c355c293849264a2c3306891 from  Fri Oct 10 
15:37:38 2014 +0530 is most recent to me.


The corresponding Gimp revision or version:

As a work around manually copying `/usr/share/gtk-doc/data/gtk-doc.make`
should do the trick.

gtk-doc.make must exist in the root of gimp's source tree.

Ok, it wasn't me. It will be done by the build sytem.
Please, excuse me, but I'm a Ubuntu/Debian packager therefore FTBFS is 
not an option.

Yes I know, probably it's not the most elegant solution, but it works.
Please have a look at my packages for further studies.

yesterday I built gimp-2.9.1 packages for ubuntu with the recent 
sources. I couldn't built for saucy. The reason is the harzbuzz version 
0.9.19 is too old. There was no problems with trusty since the version 
ships with trusty is 0.9.27. So far so good.


My first idea was to build new harfbuzz packages - 0.9.27 - for saucy in 
my gimp-edge PPA. I could built it but an upgrade fails due to 
dependency issues.

I patched the configure.ac for now. I could made a successful build. Ok, 
I pull the changes and will build again. Thanks for your work.


On monday I will check if there are runtime issues. My local machine 
runs Trusty.
