From what I understand, this is a tool that provides a kind of
shortcuts based on English names of GIMP tools.

If this is correct, then Tito is useful only for English-speaking
peoples. For me it is pretty useless, as it is equally difficult to
remember where a deeep menu is, or remember a shorcut name (like gb for
Neclaritate gaussiană or adjust for Dimensiune de canava).

I mean it may be very useful for many, but as default inclusion in a
program that provides international support with its translated
interface, hmm.

Neclaritate gaussiană will probably be nb for you :)
Tito works in all languages.

My bad... Neclaritate gaussiană will be ng.
just the beginning letters of the words.

Tito will list the other possibilities of ng too.
If you have used Neclaritate gaussiană from Tito before, it will be the
first result and you can just hit enter.

Still, this is a simple idea. Perhaps we could let users assign keys for
their favourite actions?
Maybe even let them choose multiple actions (Ex: Show grid + Snap to grid +
Configure grid) at once?
Tito could throw up a lot of such ideas...

I'll just clarify a couple of things here:

but I'm not sure about the placement of the widget..

..I don't think the transparency is necessary either.

Placement clearly is a preference. People might even want to change where
Tito appears wrt what they're working on. So we've made it adjustable in
the preferences. Similarly for transparency.

We've looked at HUD. You could say the mac help system also does something
similar.
HUD works only based on the Unity's global menu.
And Gnome hasn't planned on developing something like the HUD yet.

Besides, the idea here is to tightly bond with the gimp so we can customize
needs rather than leave it to the desktop environment. Even right now, Tito
has gimp specific features that the HUD doesn't. (See specs). Tito has the
potential to grow more useful than the HUD can be wrt gimp.

uses resources and increase the size of the application

Tito is quite light weight. Like the procedure browser... :)

I guess that's something to be considered too. If GIMP includes TITO
and next year all the major linux distributions have something like
Ubuntu's HUD, then we'll have something redundant that uses resources
and increase the size of the application with no benefit at all.

There will always be users of minimalist distros such as Archlinux (like
myself) who may choose to avoid global UI fluff like that. And Windows and Mac
users may not see something similar for some time. As long as Gimp's own
mechanism isn't intrusive and can be completely ignored if the user wishes to,
I don't think redundancy with Ubuntu should be an issue.

According to Sourceforge, 71-73% of the people that get my Gimp python
plugins are using Windows (I get these very similar figures on three
differents SF projects). The best Linux ratio is 25%. And since it's
python, the figure is biased towards Linux. These users can't depend on HUD.

I'm not using Ubuntu either and I'm not saying it's a problem right
now, but it could be if trends move to a menu like that in different
operating systems.
AFAIK gnome isn't planning a HUD-like feature, but it's moving to a
kind of global menu for certain applications (check the Web
application in Gnome 3.4)
It's not an issue now, but it could be in a near future, so I wanted
to point this out.

[Gimp-developer] Is Tito worth merging? What should be done with it?

2012-04-30 Thread Srihari Sriraman
Hi,

Note: This is a little off from the topic of Update on Tito [1]; hence
the new thread.
Is the menu search, aka 'Tito' good enough to be merged into the gimp?
(See [3] http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28366148/TITO-Specifications for list of
features and [2] http://youtu.be/G0PuH1LFWhA?hd=1 for a demo)

From the discussions with guiguru, it is quite apparent that Tito in its
current help/explore form will be very useful.
We have however been unable to make those few changes (mac like interface)
that he suggested. (See pitfalls in [3]).

We don't think there is much more we can add/change in the menu search.
And we've fixed all known bugs.
Why not merge it and let the users explore it and maybe it will spur new
ideas?
