Ability to show a grid over the canvas and optionally having the tools
snap to it has been added to current CVS HEAD (1.3.x). This feature is
not available in 1.2.x - you can however use guides: try click-n-drag on
the rulers, drag it to somewhere in the image. Maybe that can be helpful
to you...

Not really... people I talked to said they can perfectly handle that
(adjusting colours later in a layout program for example, or simply addign
a matching colour profile).

On the other hand, many layout programs simply treat files as CMYK, even
if they are RGB, which is a lot worse since it cannot be fixed easily.

Also, no information is being destroyed, since you had no colour profile
in RGB, the simple formula is a good as any other.

Unfortunately, the printer often can't or won't do that, since the
printer wants CMYK no matter what.

[Gimp-user] xaos and gimp animation

2003-07-16 Thread sam ende

xaos renders it's animations in png format, gimps mpeg encoder can't read
png format though. all the rendered files are individual (up many
hundreds) and i want to do post work on them in gimp and put them
together with other types of animations i have made .
eventually at some point i'll probably move onto film gimp but at the
minute gimp can still handle to bits and pieces i'm doing. i need a
script to convert x amount of png files into a single xcf file, is that
possible ? also xaos outputs three types of file, png (raw image i think)
and png.b and png.p, how important are these and do i need them in gimp ?

if i convert some finished animations (bits of) into mpeg fromat (under
gimp) will i still be able to modify them ?

atm i can only view the png files by doing this command;'mplayer -fs -mf
"on:fps=5:type=png" "*.png"

which isn't ideal, i would like to work with these files and obvioulsy
opening them one by one in gimp is considering the amount niegh
impossible.

are there any docs/sites where i can look up questions like this ?

thanks :)

I'm not familiar with the gfig->display grid option, but.

I thought I was going crazy on this one, cause I could have sworn that
this was possible, yet I could not find it in my current install of
1.2.3 gimp on SuSE 8.2.

I know I have used such a facility before. I fired gimp up on my Red
Hat box, and sure enough, the right click menu has the 'guides' option,
which presents the 'guide grid' option which does exactly (I think) what
you're looking for. You get a dialog that asks for: x spacing, y
spacing, x offset, y offset.

Now the question is, where'd it go on 1.2.3 on my SuSE box?

This functionality is provided by a GIMP perl script. You may be able to
locate a gimp-perl package for your distribution which includes this
functionality. Else you will need to recompile GIMP with perl support
enabled.

Thanks for the heads up, as I used this to put my wife's newsletter on
her website (school teacher). I'll be needing it again in another
month. I installed gimpperl-1.21-960 on SuSE 8.2 and I now have my

So, might this help the original poster, or is this not what he/she was
looking for? (sorry don't recall the name or gender... :) )

The feature you are talking about is a hack that uses guides to work
around the lack of a real grid in 1.2. It is implemented as a
gimp-perl script. Most probably your SuSE installation is missing
gimp-perl.

BTW: You should really, really update to 1.2.5.

You can use ImageMagick to create an animation from your sequence of
PNG images. Perhaps GAP can then read this animation, I'm not sure.

Writing that script in Script-Fu or Gimp-Perl should be trivial.

[Gimp-user] Scripting for resize

Hi all,

I'm just new to script-fu and gimp. I was not aware
scheme is used for scripting in gimp. I loved that. :D Anyway, I've read the
script-fu part of the gimp manual. I have a directory tree with about 1000
images and I'd like to resize them all to 20x20. Is there any script for doing
that? If not, I checked the DB browser and I found out I need to use
gimp-image-resize. How can I check which files are in a given directory?

Best regards,

You should try GAP's filters. Make sure your sequence has a naming
scheme like foo_0001.png, foo_0002.png, etc and then use Frames to
Image to put all the files as layers of a new one.

In worst case, you will have to use a shell script to rename your
files to something GAP likes.

> which isn't ideal, i would like to work with these files and obvioulsy

GAP has a navigator and lets you apply a filter multiple times. Maybe
you do not have to load all the image into a XCF. Really, you should
give GAP a try, it sounds like want you want. That, and read mencoder
and ImageMagick's docs more, for small editing and compression you
should have enough.

filters -> render -> pattern -> grid.

There is a bug up to gimp 1.2.3, in which the horizontal and vertical
spacing inputs are swapped. Still usable, though.

As for the axis, you will have to draw them by hand in GIMP. Depending
on your needs with axis and such, maybe you shold take a look at GNUplot
instead.

I didn't think about how complex to make this when I wrote it, but there
is a grid shape option in GFXShapes in the new Graphics Muse Tools. It
will draw simple grids with up to 27 lines vertically and horizontally
inside a bounding box, then let you scale the bounding box for your
image. Not very useful for accurate grids or non-square layers, but
interesting for artistic uses. I suppose if there were interest I could
try and make it do more stuff, but theres been very little interest so
far.

For your case, the Guide Grid Perl script used with the guides To
Selection script are probably more useful. Create the grid of guides
first, then convert them to a selection. Finally, use Edit->Stroke to
draw the grid.

It might also work to just use a current version of imagemagick and do:

   convert *.png anim.xcf

(maybe add some other switches to set fps etc.) or use another format
instead of .xcf and convetr it to xcf by load/save within the gimp.

The plug-in was always an add-on. It would have been installed in
/usr/local/lib/gimp/1.2/plug-ins/phymodmedia (at least on a Linux
