[Gimp-user] Aperture
See: http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs.html Minimum System Requirements One of the following Macintosh computers: - Power Mac G5 with a 1.8 gigahertz (GHz) or faster PowerPC G5 processor - 17- or 20-inch iMac G5 with a 1.8 GHz or faster PowerPC G5 processor - 15- or 17-inch PowerBook G4 with a 1.25 GHz or faster PowerPC G4 processor 1GB of RAM One of the following graphics cards: - ATI Radeon x600 Pro or x600 XT - ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition - ATI Radeon X850 XT - ATI Radeon 9800 XT or 9800 Pro - ATI Radeon 9700 Pro - ATI Radeon 9600, 9600 XT, 9600 Pro, or 9650 - ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600 - NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE or 6600 - NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL - NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT - NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 5GB of disk space for application, templates, and tutorial DVD drive for installation - - - - - - Obviously, very few Mac users possess machines with these specs. I will say, if someone can make using RAW as easy and powerful for post- processing as standard 8-bit processing, and makes the decision that a new generation of hardware is the most feasible, effective way, then hats off to them. Digital photography with scores of amateurs and prosumers, as well as professionals, will fuel the demand for the "next best thing". Then, the high dynamic range Cinema Display will come out, etc., etc. Watch the QT movies - it looks pretty cool IMHO - we'll see what people say when it hits the streets. kirk Mac user ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.xcf.berkeley.edu http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
Re: [Gimp-user] Another Photo Editing Software
Considering what they're shipping with their latest generation iMacs, i'm not surprised -- I mean with OS X and the built in cameras on the iMacs, they've now got videoconferencing on H.264 on their OS by default... I believe also that OS X was also one to move all the GUI processing to the graphics card (similar to how Windows Vista plans to do the same when/if it comes out, either now, or in it's sucessor). Do note that current Intel PCs are shipping with single-core 2GHz processors (low end), single-core 3GHz processors (mid-end) or dual-core 2.4 GHz processors (high-end). I could be totally wrong, though. That all said, IIRC, movie editing is a lot worse, usually - especially if you're going for something with a nice-looking GUI. You probably could get by with a bit less, but it'd be unstable and/or slow. [Gimp-user] RE : Using lab
Lab is very interesting for photo retouch because Luminosity (better said Luminance) is separated from colors. It is the most complete color model so that Photoshop uses it when you want to change the color mode. +> gives more precise result. But out of that, it is much more difficult to conceive things with L*a*b. Gimp does not implement it except in the Decompose Filter. May be another thing to do :) Cedric ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.xcf.berkeley.edu http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

And it's working dammit! If I had a spare $4200 CDN and could justify not putting it on my mortgage I'd have a new apple system soon (specced out an imac + aperture + (of course) a new ipod last night). The videos make this thing look incrediably sexy and attractive to an amateur photog like myself. Curse you Steve Jobs!!! Hi, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (2005-10-20 at 1004.37 -0200): > I wonder why the need for a graphics card with high processing power > and 3D pipeline for photo editing... Probably cos it uses it has image processor (float, quick retrieve from the card, shaders, etc required), via their CoreImage system. Or was it a rethoric question? If you look at Siggraph and other tech meetings papers, or just search for "general purpose gpu" you will find it is a hot topic, covering 2d image processing, raytracing, dynamics simulations, image recognition and othes. Sadly, it requires modern cards and drivers with all the features. While the first issue is about money, the second is a bit harder (or impossible) if you want to keep on using a full free software solution (for the "what if gimp ..."). You can say they want to move more hardware... which no doubt is true, it is part of their business. But OTOH no less true that the silicon can do the work so they are using it instead of limiting it to purely 3d applications. Well I can imagine that for real-time updating of the image, the various shaders in the graphics-card can be useful..?
