[Gimp-user] Question about involuntary resizing

2007-11-08 Thread Simon Roberts
Hi all,

I created a headshot for a friend, but the website she's posted it on, which is
essentially out of her control, does some automatic resizing. Actually, I'm not
sure if the resizing occurs in the server, or on the client browser. Anyway,
the original image has been offered at a variety of sizes, and every time it
ends up looking granular and awful on the end user's browsers. The site admins
don't know anything--they're just using a system that was written for them.

I would provide a single small image resized to the final size, but I don't
think that will work because a) I think the resizing is dynamic, and b) the
user can click on the image to get a bigger (the unresized) image. I want the
larger one to still exist and we'll lose that if we just go with a small image.

Under these dreadfully sub-optimal conditions, what can I do, or what should I
avoid doing, to try to ensure the resized image looks as good as it can?

I should point out that other people's pictures all look better than my
friend's. Not always great, to be sure, but clearly there's room to improve if
I knew what to do.

TIA,
Simon

Thanks to those who responded. Taking a look in the crop options (never
really noticed them before), I found a fixed size setting which works
great.

Thank You.

I just watch the numbers that show in the tool options. Much more
convenient than the old dialog that always came up on top of the image,
since tool options stay docked beneath the Toolbox.

And the Fixed: Aspect Ratio works great for keeping it square
(or 4x3 or whatever other aspect ratio I need). I find fixed aspect
ratios SO much easier now with the new crop tool.

[Gimp-user] Dislike new crop tool

2007-11-08 Thread Adam Wieland
Hi this is my first post to this list. The reason that I am emailing is
that the new version of Gimp has changed the crop tool and it appears to
be missing one of the features that it had before. I liked that the box
came up showing the dimensions of your image as it was changing. I
needed this to be able to crop perfect squares. Now that the box doesn't
come up it is hard to get them exactly right. Is there a way to bring
the box back or is there other way of doing what I used to.

Kind Regards,

Adam Wieland.

I know everyone's been waiting with bated breath to find out how this
turns out, but just FYI, it turns out that the root of the problem was
this bug in the kernel:

  http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9315

... once I applied that patch, Gimp (and, as it turns out, various other
programs which use sparse files) started working just fine.

So, anyone using NFS, Gimp, and recent 2.6.23 kernels may want to take a
look at that to make sure that you're not getting bitten by the same
thing.

Dear Sven,

Running the same command in the same directory but using MinGW instead of
the Windows XP Command Prompt. This gives me the following messages:

"No batch interpreter specified, using the default 'plug-in-script-fu-eval'.

I hope this information may be of some help in solving the problem I'm
having.

Many thanks again for your help,

The correct syntax to pass multiple batch commands to GIMP 2.4 is:

 gimp-2.4 -i -b '(batch-CUPify "*.png")' -b '(gimp-quit 0)'

In other words, only one command per --batch or -b option. But you may
use this option several times.

[Gimp-user] Urban Acid script v 0.6.5

2007-11-08 Thread Dave 77459
Well, this version seems to work cleanly under GIMP 2.4.1 (Windows). I got
a new definition of set-pt from a different source, but it looks exactly the
same. I moved the (define outside the main (let* and removed the declaration
of (a). I'll test to see if it runs under Ubuntu (2.4.0) when I get home.

I have only taken a quick look at the script. The most obvious problem is that
you defined it as needing three parameters and only pass it one on the command
line. Based on what I see in the script and how you are trying to use it you
don't need the image and drawable parameters.

If you are only going to use this script via batch mode you don't need the
register block.

Re: [Gimp-user] Urban Acid script (buggy)

2007-11-08 Thread Dave 77459
Kevin,

Thank you giving me this information. It is really useful to know. I think
it ought to be part of the Migration guide, because naive script writers
like me don't know that functions like set-pt are locally defined. I
thought I was using a built-in function.

It is further confused by the fact that the Windows version *does not*
complain that set-pt is not defined. It is apparently defined elsewhere and
is being found.

To my mind, set-pt is either a global function or must declared locally and
if GIMP is finding a local function, then this is a bug. It is being
handled two different ways; perhaps it is a 2.4.0 versus 2.4.1 difference?

Thanks for your help. I think I'll try a different way of setting the
splines since this is static.
