[Gimp-user] Why are my filters disabled
Hi, I've been using Gimp for a good while, but today I tried to edit a TIFF image of an old document with lots of speckles on it. No problem - use the despeckle tool! However, when I try to invoke it, all the enhance filters are greyed out. I then tried a similar file, this time a jpeg and the filters are all enabled. I then thought maybe it doesn't like to image type so I saved it as a PNG file, killed Gimp and restarted. The filters are still disabled. Can someone suggest why the filters are disabled for this image, and how I can fix it? [Gimp-user] [Offtopic] Design learning
There are literally thousands of gimp tutorials out there, many concentrate on web graphics. Here's what I'd do. 1. Create your new image using the desired dimensions (make it slightly wider than you need, you can crop it later) 2. click on the gradient tool. Choose foreground colour white, choose background colour grey click and drag the gradient tool from the top of the image to the bottom. 3. Choose green as foreground colour, use the rectangular selection tool to select a thin line at the top of the image (doesn't matter if you go the edges of the image) then click EDIT > FILL WITH FG COLOUR 4. Use the same tool to select a second rectangle further down (again it doesn't matter if your selection goes off the edges), and fill with FG colour again 5. Then choose white as foreground colour. Click EDIT > STROKE SELECTION - choose line width of the stroke in pixels, click OK. 6. Now crop your image to size. -- Bill (via www.gimpusers.com) ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

This was a mistake and now I know it but I added the repository for Gimp 2.7.3 for Karmic and tried to upgrade using Synaptic. Now I have about seventy photos I need to work on and Gimp will not run. I went back to sources and removed the repository and then uninstalled Gimp. Then Gimp 2.6.xx was there and I installed it but still no Gimp. I did a restart and Repair Broken Packages but no help. [Gimp-user] Channel Mixer Problem?
As a newbee... When I open the Channel Mixer, Red is the the selected 'output' colour and appears at 100, with the other two at zero. When I select Green or Blue, the selected RGB colour appears at 100 and the other two are zero. When I tick on Monochrome, Red shows at 100; Green and Blue are zero. I have a feeling this is not right and that I have somehow changed the default settings. I am designing lightscriibe disk covers and high contrast is required. I'm designing on Gimp 2.6.3 and as of this point I am doing my Text Along Path, as per the most offered tutorial. The problem is that on a white background ff ff ff and for the contrast use Absolute Black, 00 00 00. When I used the Text Along Path it placed a ghost of my text there and step six or the tutorial, add new layer and use paint bucket to fill, does nothing to color my text, just the outline is there and will not print, nor is it in the saved png. The only method I have come up with is to create each letter with the Text tool, one at a time. Having the letter I then need to move it into place and to rotate it until it fills the outline and it is just to difficult to accomplish. I have found a Photo Shop template of circle text where both the top and the botom have the text pointed up and running left to right but I cannot figure out how to edit it. -- Bill T. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

[Gimp-user] Cut and paste from specific channels.
I'm migrating from Photoshop and everything I read says what I want to do in the GIMP should be easy, but here I am... I have two images, A and B, which are black and white, from a proprietary program but saved as TIFFs. They open as RGB in the GIMP 2.2 on my Mac, with the image visible in all three channels. I want to create a final image, C, consisting of image A in the red channel and image B in the blue channel, and no image in the green channel. If there's a tutorial or plugin or previous mailing list post please give me a pointer and you have my thanks. I just can't find it myself. If you need more info about my problem here's some. When I copy, cut or paste I can't seem to figure out how do so in a channel-specific manner. In other words, I deselect two layers from one image and copy, then similarly attempt to paste into one channel of the second image either through the Selection Editor Menu --> Save to Channel or by simple pasting after deselecting two layers. Neither has the desired effect of taking one channel's information from image A and copying into a single channel of image B. At best the paste goes into all three channels of the second image, overwriting the original information. Thanks in advance for your help. My new digital camera (Olympus C-8080) can use raw files so I have installed rawphoto.exe in C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\ I have installed dcraw.exe in C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin\bin Whenever I open any graphics file I get the error message as Gimp boots up 'dcraw' in not recognized as an internal or external command., operable program or batch file. After a second the error message disappears and Gimp boots normally but it won't recognize my .orf raw graphics files. I have tried to access the Gimp archives on this but there seems to be some server error whenever I try to search the archives. Also, I know that most here run Gimp in linux but I am trying to utilize it for my purposes in MS Windows so I can also access it at work. Anyone successfully install this in the Windows versions? [Gimp-user] zooming in and out - percentages
Hi Everyone, I have upgraded to version 2.2. There are some very nice changes and improvements all round. I think the open and save dialogues are much more user friendly. One thing that seems to have changed is the percentage indicator on the title bar of any image. I used to rely on that quite extensively. Is there a way to turn that on in this version? Terrific release, developers! Thanks, Bill W. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.xcf.berkeley.edu http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
[Gimp-user] installation directories
Hi, I just introduced a friend to Gimp (win32). We used the GTK installer first and the Gimp2 installer second. I noticed that the installer says that we were installing version 2.2. Anyway Gimp would not run citing an error that it could not find a bunch of dll's. I checked on my machine (I dual boot) and found them in C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin. That's where they were installed on my friend machine, as well. The error message said it was looking for those dll's in C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins. So we just copied all the dll's from the bin directory to the appropriate plugins directory. Not the most elegant fix but the Gimp now works. Is this an issue with the installer? I guess this might be a bug report but I'm not sure where to report it. Anyway, Thanks and regards, Bill W. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.xcf.berkeley.edu http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
Re: [Gimp-user] Re: Is delivered mail (carefull!)
Chances are nobody else on the GIMP list got it in the first place. The infected machine sent it To: an e-dress it found locally. The From: e-dress is one also found locally. In this case, the infected machine had both Andy's e-dress in it as well as the gimp-users list e-dress. The virus didn't go through the list. Re: [Gimp-user] Default JPEG quality setting - where?
Just an observation from a rank novice: why save as a jpeg if you don't want any compression? Bill Lee Antti Mäkelä wrote: Hi, Where can I set the default quality when saving JPEG images? The default 85 is too low, I want to use 98. I could not find a suitable setting anywhere, either in config files or in menus. Where is it hidden? Right now I'm just using "Save as" as a workaround because then I actually see the dialog asking for the Q setting, but this is not really all that smooth. (No lectures on the default 85 being "enough", thank you - it is not enough, and I can clearly see artifacts on my edited digital photographs if saved with 85.). The image with all its parameter settings is simply too big for my screen, at any resolution. The action keys roll off the bottom, even when I hide the panel. [Gimp-user] installing bump plugin
Hi, I am a brand new member of this list so excuse my newbie questions. I checked the archive but it doesn't seem to be 'searchable' (it returns an error message). Anyway, I am trying to install the bump plugin; which is just bumpmap.c, in order to do the tutorial but I can't seem to get it working. I think I'm supposed to use gimptool-2.0 but I get the command not found error. Is this tool itself a plugin? Where do I obtain it? I am running mandrake 10.1 official on an Inspiron 9100 laptop. Would it be reasonable/feasible to add a hook into gimp that checks it's age and gives a warning if it is more than x months old? Would it possibly be that at gimp.org the latest "stable" version is 1.2.5 and that is what might be included in most distros (not sure what distros all include, but my RH9 I got was 1.2.something)? And maybe other folks would not want to "risk" using an "unstable" yet newer version? FWIW, I'm using 2.0pre1 and keeping up with stuff. But I can imagine some would rather wait for a "stable" release...? Right on! I just moved to FC1 and 1.2.5 is what's there. This approach works just fine unless the image has rounded corners, as many of mine do. Cropping leaves you with a rectangular image which, without a transparent background, causes annoying white (or whatever your background color is) artifacts outside the rounded corners.
