Re: [Gimp-user] Send by Email... isn't working
Richard H. wrote: Aren't most GNU/Linux distributions installing by default a mail transfer agent like exim or postfix? Debian at least does this, and then the plug-in works. Please consider that a mail server also has to be configured which is often a non-trivial thing that can't be expected from a normal desktop user. Maybe the solution would be to change the plug-in in order it calls the preferred mail user agent, for example evolution or Thunderbird? This would make it useful after all. As Sven already said, I think xdg-email would be the best solution. GIMP just would have to execute xdg-email --attach filename Setting up exim4 isn't all that hard to do. Run dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config as root. Follow the instructions and set Exim up to use a smart host to send email. It doesn't have to listen on any port except 127.0.0.1. Set up the smart host as the smtp server for your isp--mail.example.com--and add your user name and password as follows to a single line in /etc/exim4/passwd.client : mail.example.com:username:password with url being your ISP's mail server and the username and password being your username and password for your ISP's mail server. Don't include the quotes as I used them only for delineation from the rest of the sentence. Restart exim4, or edit /etc/exim4/passwd.client before running dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config, and the email function in Gimp will work as it should. Re: [Gimp-user] UFRaw as Gimp Plug In blurry pics. . . why?
Carusoswi wrote: On Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 03:58:14PM +0200, Carusoswi wrote: Anyhow, out of curiosity, I did boot up Ubuntu just now, tried Gimp, and it appears that, somehow, I or my system has installed UFRaw so that when I try to open a RAW photo, instead of the error message I used to receive, UFRaw opens the image for me, and I can make adjustments or just click ok after which the photo is loaded into GIMP. My problem is that all photos thus loaded are extrememely fuzzy, as though I had hit the entire image with a strong dose of Gaussian. So, can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? What are you comparing to? JPEGs produced by the same camera? If you use RAW, many enhancements that your camera normally does are not done, among them sharpening. Depending on your camera you might have a setting in your camera to select how much sharpening is done on processed images. You can use either the Sharpen filter or Unsharp mask to sharpen your imported RAW photo in GIMP. -- Ville Patsi I am comparing to my very similar workflow from within XP (as compared to Ubuntu). The difference in XP is that I first open my imaging using Sony's Image Data Converter that came with the camera. That application does a beautiful job of minimizing noise (even from ISO 6400 images). Then, I either use CS4 or Gimp to open the file as a tiff. I never shoot using anything other than RAW. In Linux, my only converter options are UFRAW or Lightzone (which I have stopped using of late). I cannot even find the noise reduction tool in the Linux version of UFRaw (not certain there is one). I've used UFRaw in Windows, and there is most definitely a noise reduction tool, and I was, frankly, surprised at what a good job it did. I know I must have changed some setting that persists in UFRaw from one session to the next, but doggone if I can figure out what it is. Any additional suggestions most welcome. Thanks for the replies. Caruso Just so you know Noise Ninga is available on the Noise Ninga site (picturecode.com) in rpm and deb packages. It's proprietary, but seems to work fairly well after you take the time to set it up correctly. You can try it out for free, but must buy a license to save anything you want to keep as the demo puts a grid over the top of the picture. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
Re: [Gimp-user] GIMP needs to close (!)
aether wrote: And I haven't even opened it yet! I recently went to open GIMP, and right when I thought GIMP had finished initializing, I got a dialog box that said GIMP needed to close. I was never able to open GIMP after that. So I uninstalled GIMP and used Search to clean out all of the stray bits left scattered around. I then downloaded a new copy of GIMP 2.6.5. But this new copy is doing exactly the same thing. I'm honestly not even sure how to go about fixing this one. This sounds to me like I might have a problem on my end--if only because this problem doesn't seem to be happening to anybody else out there. But I don't know where to start looking for the problem if it's on my end. I've not added any new software since the last time I was able to use GIMP. I would greatly appreciate any advice here, even if it's only of a general nature telling me how I should approach this problem. Thanks a lot. Just out of curiosity since you have provided no real information about what you have and have not done. 1. Did you bother taking a look at the task manager to see if there is a gimp process already running that was left over from the installer? 2. Have you looked at the Event Viewer and the application error logs? If they aren't turned on turn on logging for that. I haven't used windows for several years but that's where I would start. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
[Gimp-user] Printing from Gimp
A gimp newbie here; I just set gimp up on a Debian system and am having problems getting my OfficeJet 5500 to print from Gimp. It works fine with all other software on my system so I'm puzzled as to why it won't work with Gimp. I use CUPS for printing and have set my printer up using the foomatic/hpijs setting as there are no gimpprint drivers available. In Gimp printer setup I have Postscript level 2 selected as the model (the OJ 5500 doesn't show up in the list) and have the path to the .ppd file for the OJ 5500 in the PPD file box. What am I doing wrong in my setup? Will this printer simply not work as a PostScript printer using the .ppd file, or do I need to install more software? (I have HPIJS 1.6.2 installed along with the latest versions I can find in Debian of all foomatic files and libraries.)
