Re: [Gimp-user] JPEG Files
Well I have a Max Cache size of 3gb and a max new file size of 5 gb. My max file size for thumbnails is 128mb. My undo size limit is 3gb with 4 undo levels min. I assumed this was all hard disk as I certainly do not have enough RAM for these levels. (I have enough hard disk for this with approx 90gb free) Yet even with this set, I still get the errors below. -Original Message- From: Owen [mailto:rc...@pcug.org.au] Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2011 3:35 PM To: Ralph Zerbonia Cc: 'MM'; gimp-user@lists.xcf.berkeley.edu Subject: Re: [Gimp-user] JPEG Files On Tue, 4 Jan 2011 17:44:47 -0500 "Ralph Zerbonia" wrote: > I've had the same problem when I try and create or edit .tif files > greater than about 400mb. Here is a table that provides an approximate mapping between Photoshop quality levels and GIMP (actually IJG JPEG library) quality levels: Adobe Photoshop quality 12 <= GIMP quality 98, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop quality 11 <= GIMP quality 95, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop quality 10 <= GIMP quality 93, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop quality 9 <= GIMP quality 91, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop quality 8 <= GIMP quality 90, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop quality 7 <= GIMP quality 89, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop quality 6 <= GIMP quality 90, subsampling 2x2 Adobe Photoshop quality 5 <= GIMP quality 89, subsampling 2x2 Adobe Photoshop quality 4 <= GIMP quality 88, subsampling 2x2 Adobe Photoshop quality 3 <= GIMP quality 88, subsampling 2x2 Adobe Photoshop quality 2 <= GIMP quality 87, subsampling 2x2 Adobe Photoshop quality 1 <= GIMP quality 86, subsampling 2x2 Adobe Photoshop quality 0 <= GIMP quality 85, subsampling 2x2 Some remarks: - I designed this mapping in a way that is a rather pessimistic for GIMP. It tries to be "at least as good", which means that in practice you could reduce the GIMP quality by a few points and still get about the same quality level. - Photoshop includes several parameters in a single "quality" setting, while GIMP provides separate controls for the "quality level", the choice of subsampling and other parameters hidden in the Advanced options in the JPEG dialog. It is likely that future GIMP versions (after 2.4) will also offer a simplified interface by default and hide the current quality slider inside the advanced options. - Subsampling 1x1 and 2x2 are short ways to write "1x1,1x1,1x1" and "2x2,1x1,1x1" that you find in the GIMP JPEG dialog. - If you still intend to do more work on the image, you should never just save it as JPEG. Always keep a copy in XCF format (GIMP's native file format). - Because of the change of subsampling, Photshop quality 7 uses a "GIMP quality level" that is lower than Photoshop quality 6. This may seem strange, but apparently the Photoshop developers designed the quality levels to be related to the expected file size rather than the quality of the JPEG quantization. - The default GIMP quality level is 85. This matches the worst quality level for Photoshop (quality 0). This is not really true because of the different subsampling (GIMP uses 2x1 by default, which is better than 2x2) and because the mapping that I described here is rather pessimistic for GIMP. But level 85 is good enough in most cases and the default Photoshop quality levels are designed for high-quality storage, not for publishing on the web. - Photoshop includes a totally different quality scale in its "Save for web" interface. It goes from 0 to 100 (like in GIMP) with the following mapping (again, rather pessimistic for GIMP): Adobe Photoshop Save for web 100 <= GIMP quality 98, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop Save for web 75 <= GIMP quality 92, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop Save for web 50 <= GIMP quality 86, subsampling 1x1 Adobe Photoshop Save for web 25 <= GIMP quality 72, subsampling 2x2 Adobe Photoshop Save for web 0 <= GIMP quality 51, subsampling 2x2 - Setting the GIMP quality level to 95 or higher is a waste of disk space and/or bandwidth. - Setting the GIMP quality level to anything below 50 is a bad idea. - I just saw that the GIMP user manual has a very confusing description for the subsampling parameter and it is not even correct. I will try to fix that soon. This is probably way more information that you were expecting. The short answer is: set your GIMP quality level to 93 or higher (but in fact, 90 should be OK). And set the subsampling to 1x1,1x1,1x1. -Raphael ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

[Gimp-user] jpeg save settings
I've seen several debates about using the default jpeg quality setting when saving, but how about the DCT Method? The default is "Integer". I've always bumped it up(?) to "Floating Point" on the assumption that it is better and only increases CPU usage. The file size of the floating point DCT was actually smaller than the Integer one (at least on my one test image). Is Integer DCT default a hold over from the days of slower CPUs or are there machines out there where using floating point is a noticeable performance hit? - Timothy Jedlicka, [EMAIL PROTECTED], 1-630-713-4436, AOL-IM=tjbonzo ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.xcf.berkeley.edu http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
[Gimp-user] JPEG
I'll admit up front to not having followed the conversation so far. What quality levels you use on JPEG depends heavily on the type of data you are wanting to store, you quality requirements, space requirements, etc. As an example (worked up for a map conversation) http://broggs.org/~mcbeth/CivMap.png http://broggs.org/~mcbeth/CivMap.jpg The point of the demonstration was to show that JPEG isn't always smaller, and that it isn't always appropriate for your data. The newer JPEG preview in the GIMP save dialog helps a lot in making those kinds of decisions. If I am completely off topic, I'm sorry, I have to deal with inappropriate uses of JPEG files all the time in my work :( Jeff This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.xcf.berkeley.edu http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

[Gimp-user] JPEG parameter struct mismatch
hi all, since version 2.0x (i think 2.0.1 was fine and problem startet with 2.0.2 but not 100% sure)...i get a ... JPEG parameter struct mismatch: library thinks size is 372, caller expects 376. ... when trying to save jpeg's. i'm using libjpeg 6.2 /usr/include/jconfig.h /usr/include/jerror.h /usr/include/jmorecfg.h /usr/include/jpeglib.h /usr/lib/libjpeg.a /usr/lib/libjpeg.la /usr/lib/libjpeg.so /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62 /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62.0.0 ... no doublicate headers elsewhere - so i'm a little bit stuck here. any suggestions will do ;-) -- rgds marc'O puszina ___ Gimp-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

[Gimp-user] jpeg quality
Two questions regarding jpeg quality settings: 1. Is a setting of 1 truly equal to a lossless jpg? I've read conflicting stories about this - I suspect not. 2. Is file size the only reason not to use quality=1. It still seems like a bargain compared to tif file size. - Timothy Jedlicka, [EMAIL PROTECTED], 1-630-713-4436, AOL-IM=bonzowork Network Entomologist, Lucent Technologies, Testers For Hire ___ Gimp-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
[Gimp-user] JPEG EXIF data gets deleted
Hi all, If a JPEG image with EXIF data (extra info from digital camera's) is loaded into the GIMP, very simply altered, and saved again, it has lost the EXIF data. Can this be fixed? Is there a workaround or patch available? Can EXIF data support for JPEG be added in the source to the plugins/common/jpeg GIMP_PARASITE_... by one of the GIMP developers Thanks and a happy new year, Pander ___ Gimp-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
[Gimp-user] jpeg 2000 suport?
Hi list, will jpeg 2000 ever be supported in GIMP. A similar question was already asked in December 1999 to this list, however, situation has quite changed since then, and the standard is now fully specified (in its fist version at least). I once also read about patent issues, similar to Tiff, does anyone know anything about that? In the web-pages I visited I couldn't really figure this out. I think that this new Graphic standard offers quite nice features and should be taken into consideration. One nice feature is 16 bit color, which probably will only be actual in Gimp 2.* (http://www.gegl.org/), however the wavelet compression and the possible regions of interests are also very interesting. If you don't know about jpeg 2000, please see: http://www.jpeg.org/JPEG2000.htm http://public.migrator2000.org/main.xalter http://jj2000.epfl.ch/ http://www.ece.ubc.ca/~mdadams/jasper/ Best regards Manuel
[Gimp-user] jpeg lists import/export
Is there a way to import and export jpeg lists in gimp. I was wondering if they could be imported in as layers. I was also wondering if there was a way to export the same thing. Are jpeg lists a standard format? Sorry if this is a newbie quesion. The jpeg list headers look like this: JPEGLIST # First line is always JPEGLIST # Second line is frame rate 23.976025 # Width 160 # Height 120 # List of JPEG images follows /home/jjbenham/test00.jpg /home/jjbenham/test01.jpg Anouther question I have is: Does any one on the list have experience sharing files between the following three programs: gimp, blender, broadcast2000 Is there other file formats that are good for animation that can be shared by these programs? Is gif and xcf the only supported animation format in gimp? Thanks for the help, Jeremiah ___ Gimp-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
