I think that Peck's book is by far the best available book about the subject. It has some slight defects (what book does not have?), but its coverage is excellent and its way to describe matters very good. It is onnly a pity that the printer could not manage a better color rendering. It's supposed to cover GIMP 2.4. It covers version 2.4 fairly well.
