Well, this is a mail list to support users of The GIMP, so posting
finished work is not what is expected, rather a description of how the
finished work was achieved, so others can learn from it. It is method
that will find people here willing to critique, not the final image.

So post links to the component images and the description of the
processes used, in as much detail as possible, and ideally, the final
.xcf file before you exported the .png

[Gimp-user] Background textures

2012-03-27 Thread foggycreek
I have bought and downloaded some background textures.
My problem is that I can not figure out where to put them once I unzip the file.
I want to use them in Gimp 2.6, but where do I copy and paste them to.
Once this is accomplished, how do I open them in Gimp?
This is probably very basic, but I am new at this stuff and need help PLEASE.
Thank you very much! :)

You could also mention what file format they are in and what system
you use (Linux, Win, Mac).

If they are PNG or PAT, you can just drop them to your local folder
for patterns. You can see where it is for yourself, use
Edit/Preferences/Folders/Patterns menu path.

I use Windows Vista.
They are jpeg images.
Okay, so I just put them in their own file, like I have my Pctures in?
And then just grab one from there when I want one?

You have to open a terminal window, go to the the directory you
expanded files to and enter this:

sudo mv *pat /usr/share/gimp/2.0/patterns

It will ask for you super password, the one you used to install Linux.
It will then move all files with the extension pat to the patterns
directly.

You can also turn your own images into patterns. Just open them with
gimp, and resave them as .pat files. It will ask for a name which will
show up when you look for your patterns, making it easy to find them.

Hope this is clear enough. :-)

On your Window VIsta? Good luck :)

Actually, I've just tried adding JPEG files to patterns folder,
refreshed the list without restarting GIMP and it worked.

Only problem may be the pattern image size i believe max accepted is
around 500x500

The size limit is only for clipboard patterns. You can be as large as you
want for file based patterns.
