You can also use the unicode values for single letters by typing ctrlshiftuenter where is the hexadecimal value of the unicode character you wish to enter. The 'U' may be either upper or lower case, as may be the hex letters. [Gimp-user] Problem with Text Tool

There was a huge change between 2.6 and 2.8. Did you make sure that you are reading current tutorial? Have you checked the documentation?
