Hey all,

I wanted to let everyone know the solution I found to my problem and
hopefully help others searching online for the same problem.

I stumbled upon the open-source drawing/painting program Krita
(krita.org) which is capable of reading XCF files and exporting PSD
files with all layer groups and layers intact. I do all my work in Gimp
with all my layers and layer groups, then I open the file in Krita and
export in PSD format. I'm very happy with the result.

I'm wondering if the Gimp developers would be interested in adopting the
portion of the Krita code (under the GPL) which keeps the layers and
layer groups when doing a PSD export.

Hope this helps others!

This is not about "interested". Doing that doesn't make sense in
purely technical terms.

The PSD plug-in in GIMP just needs to be fixed :)

[Gimp-user] Cursors & Selections

2017-01-23 Thread Boxman
I'm and old Photoshop user (limited experience) from long ago and I'm having
trouble understanding the concept behind GIMP cursors and selections. Mainly
that there is no general selection cursor like Photoshop has and that all
cursors are attached to a function. How can I just select an element, any
element, and move it around or make alterations to it? For example, how to make
a selection within a layer and then resize it, move it around, or whatever once
that element has been made.If I use the tool that created the element, that
usually ends up repeating the function and not making the desired adjustments.

[Gimp-user] GIMP changing colors in image.

2017-01-23 Thread NewGirl
Hi there.
I am probably way in over my head even posting in here.
But maybe i get props for trying to learn.
I am using GIMP to do some super basic prep for images of my art for online
sales.
Some images end up being drastically different colors from the original painting
and photo file once uploaded into GIMP and then will also save that way when I
export tifs as jpgs for web use.
I know it's unlikely. But is there a trick or setting to disable that?
Is there some basic thing I am missing?
Can anyone explain to me what is happening or help me trouble shoot?
Thanks so much!
I would love to preserve the original color as much as possible.

If you are taking the photographs of your artwork then it is probably a hardware
issue.

First, what is the format the camera uses? RAW or possibly jpeg. Going from RAW
into Gimp involves a conversion with all sorts of tweaks where colours can be
adjusted. Jpeg from a camera on the other hand is most likely RGB colour profile
and not all colours are included. Look up color space

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_space

A fix can be as simple as "auto white balance" in Gimp, but usually more is
needed. You should take care about the lighting conditions when the photographs
are taken. A bit of reading here:

http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/white-balance.htm

Then the computer display. For best results the monitor should be calibrated.
Monitors straight out-of-the-box will have their brightness set too high. There
are simple ways to get sensible setting. see:

 http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/monitor-calibration.htm

However, all your potential customers will also have their monitors un-adjusted
so they will get a wrong impression of your work whatever you do. Why not
include a disclaimer on your web page.

There is a steep un-learning curve for ex-PS users. Gimp has its own ways of
working, do not expect it to be the same.

There is no general selection cursor. The selection tools are in the toolbox and
also the menu Tools -> Selection Tools. Choose the appropriate one for your
needs.

Gimp does not use elements or objects. A selection and the contents of a
selected area can be modified separately by any of the transform tools. Say for
moving, the selection can be moved using the move tool in selection mode and
then following a copy, the contents can be moved, usually by moving a selection
layer.

Difficult to explain in words, A very slow video demo (7 mins) might help.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEFf9zOyZdA

That is part of a series I made.

Re: [Gimp-user] GEGL - run C2g batch in command line

2017-01-23 Thread Partha Bagchi
If I am not mistaken, you need to put everything in an XML file as gegl
from command line needs an XML file to operate on. Put everything in an XML
file and then do the following:
gegl file.xml -o output.png.

Once you do that I am sure you can figure out how to do that for 10 images.

Anyway, that's my understanding. Others may be more helpful to you.

In recent GEGL releases there is an underdocumented commandline
one-liner shorthand to avoid creating XML documents:

For instance:

gegl input.jpg -o output.png -- c2g radius=1300 samples=4 iterations=23 vignette

will apply the c2g operation with the following paramteres, followed
by the vignette filter with default parameters. To make this apply to
multiple images one could for instance do:

mkdir /tmp/out ; for a in *.jpg; do echo $a; gegl $a -o
/tmp/out/$a.png -- gegl:c2g radius=1300 samples=4 iterations=90 ; done

GEGL will complain if you specify properties not valid for a given
operation and print the exisiting properties that can be assigned. If
the gegl: prefix is avoided on an operation gegl tries with gegl:
pre-pended.

I think you now it's an older version. For the most recent version
you can add ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp-standalone.

Please note: You need ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp-edge too.

Does it work? Ok! If not you always can fall back to the "latest
