[Gimp-user] Question: printing metadata TITLE / CAPTION under the image as attached photos

2018-05-03 Thread Gunnar - Swede
Hi,

I am looking for a photo editor, that can help me *creating digitized
photos with documentation.*

Descriptive text on old, digitized photos, shown below the photo.
I'm currently working with old photos, which I want to document in a
good way.

1. I want to be able to enter a caption, to be displayed together with
the image, and stored in metadata, see attached image.
2. I want to be able to create many searchable tags.

Will GIMP do it for me ??

The attached photos show what I mean, print metadata TITLE/CAPTION etc,
is that possible.??

Regards

"Gunnar - Swede"

Uninstalling won't remove your settings, however I'd prefer to find out
what's causing 2.10 to not run. Can you open a Command Prompt (open Start
Menu, type cmd and press Enter), and enter the following commands:

cd "\Program Files\GIMP 2"
dir /s > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\gimp-list.txt"

This should create a file named gimp-list.txt on your desktop. Please send
me this file as an attachment to (it'll
contain the list of files inside GIMP's install directory, and should give
me a clue which one is causing GIMP to not start).

[Gimp-user] upgraded program crashes (was 32-bit version of 2.10?)

2018-05-03 Thread Bill Kristy
It did indeed properly upgrade 2.82 on my 3b2itWin8.1 PC.

On my 3b2itWin7 PC however, while the install finished, the program
crashes on Startup (w/a Windows msg that the program "has stopped working"
so it will close program). I tried re-downloading the installer, same
issue.

What should I try now? Is there something less drastic than uninstalling
completely before re-installing (I'd love to avoid re-customizing the
program)?

That's quiet interesting idea! If my knowledge is correct, GEGL operations
could be represented like nodes of some graph, where the graph could serve
as a recorded macro (I am imagining that some filters are also those kinds
of macros). There is somewhere discussion about GEGL node editor in mailing

BIMP is a plug-in developed by Alessandro Francesconi who is not a direct part
of the GIMP team to my knowledge. There is already a ticket posted on BIMP’s
official Github repository about the incompatibility
(https://github.com/alessandrofrancesconi/gimp-plugin-bimp/issues/171) and
Alessandro is currently working on getting it updated
(https://github.com/alessandrofrancesconi/gimp-plugin-bimp/issues/165#issuecomment-386209784).

As for if BIMP should be included in GIMP, it sort of already is. GIMP has
built in batch editing through the command line, see here
(https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Basic_Batch/).

People from the Debian-user mailing list helped me to solve this one:

"ldd /usr/bin/gimp"" showed that a rogue library of libbabl in /usr/local/
was loaded. Removing that and gimp 2.10 (and gegl) works without a
problem.

Something to remember for the future.

I'm so dang busy I think I'll just wait some time, perhaps for a subsequent

The samj portable is big but straight forward.

Unpacking the 7z archive gets several files and folders

There is a 32 bit folder that you copy to your Windows installation.

Inside that are various language 'loaders' to start Gimp.

There is also a folder 'Preferences' which is the equivalent of the Gimp
profile. It contains folders for brushes / scripts / plugins etc.

Nothing complicated about running it.

My advice, head across to the gimpchat forum http://gimpchat.com/ several people
there using it.

Want to use the g'mic plugin www.gmic.eu in Gimp 2.10.0

At the moment the popular QT version does not work in the regular installation
from www.gimp.org

One way is use a partha or a samj spin off version that includes that and other
plugins. The snag with these is, come to update gmic in a few weeks time and a
complete re-installation is required.

Using the regular Gimp2.10.0 the gmic GTK version works, It has all the
functionality of the QT version, it is missing the search facility and some
eye-candy, otherwise works. Need to install an update, just replace the
downloaded gmic folder.

How to install.

1. Get the zipped version from www.gmic.eu

https://i.imgur.com/lnjbYG7.jpg

2. Un-zip and put that somewhere easy to find. Your C:\User\your-name\ folder
is ok

https://i.imgur.com/MJ4wID0.jpg

3. Start Gimp up and in `Edit -> Preferences -> Folders -> Plug-ins` set the
path to gmic, OK and close.

https://i.imgur.com/hSpfRU0.jpg

4. Restart Gimp for the setting to take effect

5. Does it work? It does here. Remember to refresh the filters to get the full
500.

Hi everybody,

almost one week that gimp 2.10 is out and still no Mac OS package on

Third party users are already distributing a mac version, so it seems
doable (but I prefer using the official version).

Any information on the release of the official MacOS version would be
useful to many of us I think.

All this talk about 25-30ppm printers tells me you are referring to
$1000+ printers, which are definitely out of reach for the average user.

My Brother B&W laser is the basic low ball model HL2140, sells for about
$130 in its latest incarnation, doesn't do duplex without very carefuly
managed paper turnover and refeeds, more trouble than its worth. But
it does manage to do about 18-19 ppm.

My Brother MFC-J6920DW, which can do tabloid by hand feed, duplex from
either tray in letter sized but is too picky about its photo paper.

Both are running on Brother supplied drivers, so while Gutenprint is
fully installed on this old debian wheezy machine, but gutenprint from
wheezy was last built in 2012, version 5.2 something.

The big printer is inkjet, and running a long job resembles watching
paint dry, ppm ranges either side of 1 a minute. Interface is via
ethernet mainly because the usb port is buried inside the machine, using
about 30" of the maximum 60 inch usb cable. Whats left is not sufficient
to reach any of my usb-2 hubs by around 4 feet.

The Brother MFC-J6920DW driver gives me all sorts of knobs to adjust the
color and density in the config menu's cups shows me. But on copy paper
its very pastel at best. On photo paper which is not marked or side
identified in any discernable way, it works great although slightly
pastel yet as I'm still "tweeking", but change nothing but turn the
paper over, and it looks like ink was poured straight out of a gallon
bucket, puddling and running all over.

Can gutenprint improve on any of that?

In what way?

These are the types of printing problems typically encountered by those
of us on SS and unable to afford the printers that you just feed the
file to.

I have a home network of several machines running LinuxCNC, all of which
can print to these printers, so this is effectively the print server,
dishing out these 2 printers to the rest of my network.

Thank you for any helpfull suggestions. FWIW, the Brother MFC-J6920DW is
touted to do several ppm. It doesn't try, even in simplex.
