Years ago i had a boss who would say “I’m too busy to learn a new
tool!” even if the new tool would save him hours or days of work.
Soemtimes i managed to get him to switch, though - it was the joys of
being bipolar i think.

But so much depends on the person and on the context and situation.

What matters is that 2.8 is working for you - and yes, GIMP is fun and
useful. It's not perfect, but who among us can say they are perfect?

As for Pafh-Pafh, a selection does not make an imperveous boundary -
rather, it makes a semi-permeable membrane: things can get in but not
out. This is because a selection is not a barrier but an enclosed
region. This is why in the video the selected black area gets white
stains on it, but the white outer area does not get black stains: the
white is outside the selection & hence unaffected. Please sacrifice two
pigeons and eat a pineapple.

Ditto what Rick said, and I’m still using 2.8! (The midst of a large project is
no time to learn new technology—as I’ve proven countless times. I finally
learned.)

I, too, like GIMP. Still learning, but started using it when I was at work and
still using Photoshop, because some of the schools I did outreach with couldn’t
afford a P’shop license.

Thanks to all who have worked so hard, and continue to do so, to make GIMP

Re: [Gimp-user] Cannot move layer

2019-06-28 Thread Richard via gimp-user-list
Maybe it was that he had a floating selection? aka. a pseudo-layer directly
atop the source layer, used mainly with the select tools. Clicking outside the
selection with a selection-based tool will (by default!) anchor (merge) the
selection back into its source layer. If this is the case, go to the Layers
menu and the first command will be "To New Layer" which will detach the
floating selection from its source layer.

Re: [Gimp-user] don't reply

2019-06-28 Thread Guy Stalnaker via gimp-user-list
I do ... as did you. I stand by my comment. I too am sometimes frustrated
by the support I receive from community-supported open source software. But
I moderate that frustration by remembering I'm using FREE software and that
I'm the beneficiary of the work of countless people who contribute to that
software in their spare time (GIMP, Frescobaldi, Lilypond are my main open
source applications). Yes, sometimes things don't work right, but that's
the chance I take in not paying for Photoshop or Sibelius, eyc.. If I'm
unwilling to be realistic about that I shouldn't use Open Source software.
Some people believe themselves entitled for what they have not paid.

Guessing a Windows user. Updating Gimp is not a bad idea however please note
that re-installing Gimp does not remove/change your Gimp profile where the tool
settings are kept.

C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\

First thing to check is the Alignment - right down at the bottom of the menu (1)
and often overlooked. If that is in 'Registered' mode then for a single layer
you are cloning on top of the source and nothing happens.

While there try a reset to default values (2), might be a fix.

Still not working? Rename that Gimp profile as a backup. Start Gimp up and it
makes a new default profile. Check it works ok. Copy any resources
brushes/scripts..etc over from the backup.

[Gimp-user] Clone Tool not working

2019-06-28 Thread louisbosqui
Hello!

I had the 2.10.10 version of Gimp on my computer and was editing many pictures
everyday, especially using the clone tool.
All of a sudden, out of nowhere, the clone tool stopped working. I set the
"source spot" using ctrl+left click and then wanted to start painting my
selection from my source but when I clicked and dragged across my selection,
nothing happened. It didn't change the image.

I updated to version 2.10.12 (latest version) but i still have the same problem.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

There are a few operations there, sometimes separate, sometimes linked.

Cropping is often for composing your image, although can be for trimming excess
off. Set the crop tool to a fixed aspect ratio and apply. That loses part of the
image.

The result can be set to size for printing in Image -> Print Size. This does not
change the pixel size of the image. The required size and pixels-per-inch (ppi)
value are saved with the image (metadata) and used by the printing software (or
should be).

If you want to set a different ppi with a defined size then scale the image.
Image -> Scale Image. This will change the pixel size of the image, depends how
much scaling, and can lose detail. A modern camera image should not be a
problem.

No videos? Here is a short, 5 minute demo of the above.
https://youtu.be/VMye0G77lD4

This is Gimp 2.10 - just using a light theme and adjusted toolbox - makes easier
viewing as a video.

Also included adding a border to fit on a defined paper size. Some print
franchises totally ignore the image metadata and will fit an image to paper
size no-matter-what. A border can circumvent that.

PS. You should not need to add an image to post here. Also. You have chosen a
terrible forum for detailed replies. Top posting / bottom posting /
quote-after-quote For pure photography then try https://discuss.pixls.us/
and there are a couple of other dedicated Gimp forums if you search.
