When you do Save As in 2.10, you'll see the bottom of the dialogue
gives you the chance to save with "slower but better compression", and
if you hover there you get a list of 2.10 features you are using that
prevent 2.8 from interpreting the file.

The least obvious is probably layer modes - you will need to switch
each layer back to the legacy layer modes by clicking on the icon just
to the right of the layer mode drop down.

The most obvious is probably that 2.8 is limited to 8-bit per channel
encoding (precision).

So if you go through and remove new features you can save for 2.8, but
of course this may affect the appearance of the image.

Re: [Gimp-user] Image Compression

2020-12-03 Thread Rick Strong
You haven't said whether the resultant PDFs are for printing or for web
viewing. And are you referring to a PDF of one page, letter size, or many
pages of a larger size? Nor do you tell us what size you think a "normal"
PDF is.

For printing you can get away with 260 dpi images.
For web viewing try 96 dpi, as has been suggested.
For a many-page PDF of course the file will be large.

Subject: [Gimp-user] Image Compression

Hello,

I scanned in a magazine as JPEGs, 300 dpi and high compression, but
still each file is over a megabyte. When I create a PDF using these
files, it is over 250 MB. I was wondering if you could tell me how to
compress these files in GIMP so that the resulting PDF will be of
normal size.

Thank you,

Jason

Just out of curiosity, probably nothing to do with your problem, what do
you mean by "my system didn't like $HOME/"? In Unix-like systems, the $HOME
variable equates to /home/, usually.

Set height and width to 1024 and 1024, file type to Gray unsigned 16-bit Little

I downloaded the source for the 2.4.116 version of the PDS plug-in for GIMP.
To build it for Linux (I don't have access to a Mac) I needed to comment out
the include of the gimpcompat.h in the pds.c file.

I told gimp 2.10 to load the 1p157746813eff40b8p2363l3m1.img that you

I have no idea what I'm looking at in the sample image but the plug-in

FYI, in the pds.c file that is in version 2.4.116 of the plug-in it says it

Your problem might be your PDF creation tool (unstated), rather than
your input images. If the images are black and white (or grayscale)
using TIFFs instead of JPEG might help - but PDF is also capable of
embedding JPG images directly inside which your workflow has not done
(unless you have roughly 250 pages...).

A PDF for printing is nomally hundreds of megabytes per page.

if you mean, normal compared to PDF files on the Web, scale the images
down to e.g. 96ppi. )96dpi). You may need to use unsharp mask on htem a
little afterwards.

Obviously a magazine will be copyright, as Cliff pointed out, so
remember it's not in general legal to redistribute even for no money.
unless you get permission, unless both the magazine and all items in it
are out of copyright- e.g. it's mover than 70 years since the death of
any artist or writer involved.
