Re: [Gimp-user] Imported SVG looks blurry in Gimp

One way to visualise what is happening is to open the original image as say 480X480 and overlay a grid of 20px. Then you will notice what each pixel covers. You will also get an idea of the anti aliasing will do which is what you will see when you magnify the 24 x 24 px image. Re: [Gimp-user] resizing image creates blurry image
Are you talking pixels as the unit, ie, 398x398 pixels and trying to reduce that to 28x28 pixels. If so, I think you are going to be out of luck as the reduction is too great. Using reductio ad absurdum, what would you expect if you tried to reduce the image to 1x1 pixel? You cannot expect to have anything like the same information (image likeness) when reduced to such a small amount, approx .6% of the original). I then used ImageMagick to convert the nmg back to .pdf format. I've done this with two different sets of images. Re: [Gimp-user] Framing Pictures
I would like to add frames to some of the graphics I'm using on a website. The frame I want is really just a white border of 8 or 10 pixels on each of the four sides; the pictures will all be rectangles. I tried doing a frame like this in Gimp 2.8 (in Windows 8) earlier today and couldn't think of a way to do this very easily. I thought about drawing a white line along the edge of each side of the rectangle but didn't know a good way to draw a straight line of the desired thickness exactly where I want it. I thought about using the eraser to turn the edges white but that seemed clumsy. I'm guessing there is a much simpler way so I hope someone can tell me what it is. :) 1. Re: [Gimp-user] EXIF support in latest Gimp
Dear Gimp community, I would like to inquire about the state of the EXIF support in Gimp, as per the title. It seems that Gimp 2.8.6 (Fedora 19) is ignoring the colorspace (Adobe RGB) that is written by my camera as per the EXIF 2.21 specifications (that is, setting the InteropIndex to 'R03' for Adobe RGB, see http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/EXIF.html) It seems hard to find proper documentation (or even the 2.21 specifications online), but some software (e.g. Geeqie) manage to parse the useful information very well (see https://gitorious.org/geeqie/geeqie/blobs/master/src/image.c#line288) Is there a workaround for this? It cripples the Adobe RGB workflow to a point I prefer sticking to sRGB for now, which is not ideal given that printers and monitors keep improving in gamut. Here are two test files: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/176092/_DSF2455.JPG (Adobe RGB) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/176092/DSCF2456.JPG (sRGB) $ exiftool _DSF2455.JPG |grep color Color Space : Uncalibrated $ exiftool DSCF2456.JPG |grep sRGB Color Space : sRGB Interoperability Index : R98 - DCF basic file (sRGB) So my guess is that your image does not contain that profile? -- Owen ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list

Re: [Gimp-user] GIMP 2.8x on Linux Debian Squeeze?
This topic accidently started as reply to '[Gimp-user] PDF' and likes to be continued here. Date: Sun, 12 May 2013 13:36:10 -0400 From: Henry W. Peters Hi, Does anyone on the list here, have any actual knowledge or experience building GIMP 2.8x on Linux Debian Squeeze? My current version of GIMP is 2.6.1. Some questions I have (for example) are: Do I /really/ have to uninstall the old version...? Any dependency issues (conflicts, etc.) ? Any way to get the (newer) dependencies by means of the terminal? Will I be able to actually do this (i.e.,/ do a working build with this version/)? Thanks much for any pointers. You can build any number of gimps independent of each other. First you need to understand that when you build something, it goes hunting for libraries in a path specified by your environment. So first thing to do is set the environment path for your console. Do all your building out of the same console where these environment variables have been set. export PATH=/build_dir/gimp-2.8/bin:$PATH export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/build_dir/gimp-2.8/lib/pkgconfig export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/build_dir/gimp-2.8/lib Now cd into your source directory and ./configure --PREFIX=/build_dir Configure may fail, READ the message on failure. If it tells you that gegl is the wrong version, download babl and gegl and then build babl first, then gegl using ./configure --PREFIX=/build_dir Run configure again from your gimp source, now if it tells you that GTK is the wrong version, download the latest glib, gtk, atk, gtk-pixbuf and pango and build them, again with ./configure --PREFIX=/build_dir Actually if you follow this tutorial, http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/compiling-gimp-for-ubuntu you could build the git version but would not recommend that, but rather apply the principles to the source code. And when you finish, start the program from the console; # /build_dir/bin/gimp-2.x Note also that the build_dir should not be /usr/local but rather something like ~/user/gimp-2.x -- Owen ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list

Remember, I need this to be in layman's terms, please. I'm doing a google search to find some tutorials that are easier to follow than the manual while I wait for a reply. Thanks! Try righting on the image Select Colors Then select Threshold and see if you can adjust out the clutter. Alternatively try Image-Colors-Curves and see if adjustment there will clean it up for you Lastly, try converting the image to indexed, Image-mode-Indexed and set the number of colors to 2 You can keep your scanned image, once you clean it out, save it as an xcf so you can do more work on it, then if you want a png or jpg, just export it, File-Export to that format/file type -- Owen ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list
Re: [Gimp-user] Post GIMP File Management, Organizing Viewing/Simpler Alternatives Options PLEASE READ HELP!!! How Make .JPG Files More Like Tiles or Icons. Once Moved They Stay Set
Hello Everyone, Please Help Me! I am perplexed hungry for ideas. I have thousands of 3x5 inch index cards, all hand written cards. And I have learned how to use GIMP to scan 4 cards at a time, crop, guillotine the 4 cards to make 4 seperate .JPG files, and then import to my PC (XP). The cards will (I guess) be numbered like 001.jpg, 002.jpg like that. BUT this current batch of cards are basically just things to do index cards, so I will likely have 3 folders labeled by priority 1, 2, 3And inside these folders are all my .JPG files depending on the priority of each things to do card. And all these thousands of cards will be dragged and dropped or otherwise be constantly moved and/or deleted by me constantly from folder to folder, keep in mind each of these .JPG files is labeled/numbered. So when I move them from one folder to another, there is labeling/numbering conflicts, and the order and positioning will be lost. What I was hoping for was some sort of a program/file manager whereby I can treat the .JPG Files more like tiles or desktop icons, once moved they are just there and do not move unless I move them and they do not get automatically moved by my PC based on file name/number, yet still be able to move and/or delete them from folder to folder without conflict. I really need some thinking outside of the box options/ideas. Any alternative file folder experts out there? Any file management/organizing programs out there? Please Help! Use a program like shotwell and tag each file with its file name. Then no matter where it is you can retrieve it from the tag. The problem is that when I want to change the text You might be better off duplicating the text layer (maybe several times) and adjusting the text to a selection of sizes for each layer. Switch the visibility of the layers on and off as you try things out. I have to delete the levels for this, edit the text and then create the effect again. The previous two threads didn't go to the list, clicked 'Reply' instead 'Reply to All' so they went directly to your mail, my mistake... :P Try configuring 'librsvg' without 'gobject-introspection': ./configure --prefix=/opt/gimp-2.8/ --enable-introspection=no And yes, I tried compiling 'gobject-introspection-1.33.3.tar.xz' and 'librsvg-2.36.1' fails to detect it, so for now disable it and give it a try. Okay, we have success with svg image loading. One last thing and it's probably trivial for everyone here but me. The GTK themes aren't taking. When run from the command line, I get this: (gimp:26437): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: clearlooks, Gtk-Message: Failed to load module pk-gtk-module Gtk-Message: Failed to load module canberra-gtk-module What do I need to do to resolve that? http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/compiling-gimp-for-ubuntu Just so you know... I just removed the BABL and GEGL libraries from my system and attempted to build exactly as the instructions say I should... well, it says: checking for GLIB - version = 2.28.0... no *** Could not run GLIB test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means GLIB is incorrectly installed. configure: error: *** GLIB 2.28.0 or better is required. The latest version of *** GLIB is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/. I think I will give this a try after dinner... the wife' strongly hinting that I should eat. I wonder if I will be able to build a conflicting version of GLIB in the /opt/gimp-2.8 tree without other issues. You need to build things in the selected build directory, babl, gegl and gimp If glib and gtk versions are too low, you need to build those and their dependancies in the selected directory. DO NOT BUILD IN /usr or /usr/local Make sure that the console you are working is the console that you have exported the paths as per the gimp users tutorial. That way, looking for libraries ensures the first searched path is your build directory, not /usr or /usr/local -- Owen ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list
Re: [Gimp-user] CentOS packanges for 2.8?
I've been looking all over but there are just no CentOS (or RHEL for that matter) packages for the latest version of GiMP. Compiling from source doesn't even seem to be a good option either as it looks as if it will break the whole OS the way things are set up. This is no way to build an application! Applications and OSes should never be tied so closely together. I like GiMP 2.8 for Windows a lot and would prefer to run it under CentOS as that is my main desktop OS. I have given up on Fedora because of the unholy abomination GNOME has become. Packaging is not a developers problem, talk to the CentOS people? I have a KDE version of Fedora 17, 2.8 came with that. Also have Gnome and XFCE versions of Fedora 17, prefer the KDE. -- Owen ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list

I can't figure out what is going on with bit depth (precision) in gimp 2.8. I read in a .png file which had 16 bit precision, but when I exported it to a .png file under a different name I got a file with 8 bit precision. It used to be true that when gimp read in a 16 bit file, it issued a warning that it was converting it to 8 bit precision. Is higher precision just awaiting another version of gimp?
