Please help.

[Gimp-user] GIMP Help Please

2020-08-12 Thread Stella Owen via gimp-user-list
Hello,
I have forgotten my username and password to the Gimp Forum/User List. If
someone could tell me how to reset this or reset this for me please.
Also, I purchased the workbook for Gimp and I have tried for 3 days to fix
a simple fix to a photo. If someone could crop and make my attached photo
clearer so I can post it to a web page I would be indebted to you.

It works for me!

1. File->New

2. Select Free select tool

7. Press Enter to get the "new" selection and marching ants.

That is approximately 10 mm X 10 mm

If you are looking at it, say 40 X 40 mm size, it will look blury.

One way to visualise what is happening is to open the original image as say
480X480 and overlay a grid of 20px. Then you will notice what each pixel
covers. You will also get an idea of the anti aliasing will do which is what
you will see when you magnify the 24 x 24 px image.

Re: [Gimp-user] resizing image creates blurry image

2018-11-12 Thread Owen
Are you talking pixels as the unit, ie, 398x398 pixels and trying to reduce
that to 28x28 pixels.

If so, I think you are going to be out of luck as the reduction is too great.

Using reductio ad absurdum, what would you expect if you tried to reduce the
image to 1x1 pixel?

You cannot expect to have anything like the same information (image likeness)
when reduced to such a small amount, approx .6% of the original).

I think it is unreasonable to expect gimp to be a full blown font editor.

This works on black lines on a white background.

1. Use the free selection tool and select the part of the line you want to
change color. It does not have to be exact.

2. Right click in the selection, Colors->Map>Color exchange.

Hi Judy,

Start by going to Edit->Preferences->Interface and perhaps reset the
shortcuts in case you have done something obscure with them.

Then go back to Edit->Keyboard shortcuts, and then look at the very left of the
dialog and you will see a "+"

Click on that and see what is there.

It is fairly straight forward.

1. Open image 1 in gimp
2. Open image 2 in gimp
3. Use one of the selection tools and select the area you wish to copy grom
image 1
4.  Edit->Copy
5. Switch to image 2
6.  Edit->Paste as new layer

You don't give sufficient information.

What size is your image? What dpi is it?

Again, just guessing,

  Open the image
Image->Resize and make the dpi say 300
Select the text tool, click on the image and say set the font size to 150
  Type away

Then look at the image, is it still pixelated?

Or post an xcf with the problem somewhere so others can look at it

What is ypur initioal color?

What color is the background?

Do you try to change to color with the selector in the Text dialog? That wont
work, you need to highlight the (invisible) text to change color.

See http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-image-text-management.html

Using a 2.7GHz AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ the startup time
is less than 3 seconds with 2.8.10 (Linux Mint 17.1)

Git edff1d0 also started in about 3 seconds on the second start. Wasn't
counting for the first start, but sure it was more than 3 secs.

Fast enough for me !!

You dont say how wide the strip is.

If a very narrow strip, line width say, it may be appropriate to use the clone
tool and clone the adjacent area

If it is a wide strip, you may wish to use the rectangle select tool.

 a. Select say the left hand area, note the size of the rectangle fo later
 b. Copy (ctrl+c) and paste as a new layer
 c. Now select the right hand area, copy and paste as another new layer

Use your layers dialog to join the two layers

Perhaps use the smudge tool to even out the discontinuity of the join

OK, so I’ve noticed what seems to be a bug in GIMP. I’vegotten it to do this
 three times now.

I’ll post it in a more appropriate location, once I confirmI’m not crazy.

If I have a gimp session open, and have been working in itfor a while, I’ve
noticed that if I double-click on an XCF file, to open it;GIMP dumps my
existing open session, with NO warning whatsoever, and reopensanew, with the
 requested image.

Any (unsaved) work done in the previous session simply…vanishes.

Subsequent attempts to open other XCF files from that pointon, just open a
new window, as expected; in the same session.

I’m not sure what it takes to trigger the other less desirable…let’s call it
ambitious open/file process, other than time. After it does this…thing, I can
open and close GIMP repeatedly and it works as one would expect –openinga new
window in the same session. But for some reason, after a session has beenopen
for a while (think days), clicking an XCF file to open it, causes theexisting
 GIMP session to abort/abend/awhig-out?

This is 2.8.14 on a Windoze 7 machine.

 Thoughts?

Well it doesn't behave like that with LinuxMint-17.2, maybe a Windows thing?

Install a C compiler, you probably need GCC, C++, do a yum search on those
items.

Once you get those installed, rerun configure, and read carefully the next
failure and install that as well, probably be autotools

I think you are doing it all wrong.

To answer your last question first, you will probably find the dpi has gone
from 300 to 72 dpi (or of that order)

Secondly, I don't quite understand what was done. Was the whole score saved as
a multipage pdf, if so, can you break it up with pdftk or pdfseparate, get the
individual sheets?

You might be able to use pdfimages to extract the embedded image and work on
that.

If you want to convert it back to one pdf, use imagemagicks convert and its
million options

 The plug-in is here: http://registry.gimp.org/node/25422

I'm running Debian XFCE inside an Android tablet and using Gimp 2.8.
 (Installed

The Plug-in doesn't state it runs in Gimp 2.8, so am wondering if that is an
 issue?

I downloaded the binary, used 7zip to extract the file and placed that in the
plug-ins folder but it does not show up in the menu, am I missing something?

If it isn't compatible, or with how Gimp is running on XFCE, I could really do
with pointers to another way to achieve similar functions please.

I need to duplicate a layer 360 times and rotate it 1° each layer to form a
ring/circle of text for animation, is there an alternative to this plug in
 event
of not being able to install it at all?

 Thanks,

Re: [Gimp-user] program crashes

2015-01-11 Thread Owen Cook
I don't use Windows, but this seems to be an eternal problem.

So I set about going through the motions of downloading a windows version

   Start at http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

   Then Show other downloads

   Then Windows

Comment: This assumes that if a Windows version is not in the main listing, it
must be in Other downloads
I do not believe this to be user friendly to Windows users, particularly as
they probably make up 80% of users?

But then having got to the Windows section, the first line reads;

The Windows installer packages by Jernej Simončič are distributed from the
GIMP HTTP server (download.gimp.org) and its mirror servers

Comment: Clicking on download.gimp.org presents a directory listing.
I could imagine Windows users rolling over to die at this point! But continuing
it then offers first a torrent

Download GIMP 2.8.14 ---Link to torrent
If the torrent download doesn't work, you can also follow this link--link
to exe file.

It's no wonder users attempting to download gimp end up with infected programs
which are probably easier to access from a Google search.

So that's my rant, my suggestion to the keeper of the download page is to put
the Windows version at the top;

   GIMP for Windows
Torrent link
program link

Re: [Gimp-user] Unable To Download GIMP

2014-08-18 Thread Owen

GIMP sounds like just the program I am looking for since my Power PC
graphics software will not run on my new Mac Mini which is running OS
 X 10.9.2.

However, I have not been able to download the software. Each time I
try, the file in the downloads folder has an X on it. As a side note,
I am encountering the same problem with Scribus.

I even tried changing system preferences to accept downloads from any
source, but the result was the same.

Is there some kind of secret method for downloading your software?
There must be a way to do it because I would guess it has been
downloaded successfully in the past. Would you please help me download
 this software?

One other point, it took me two days to find out how to get a message
to someone who might be able to help. I couldn't find a 'contact us'
or support option on the web site. I still do not know if this message
will actually get to anyone who can help.

Where did you try downloading it from? It should have been;

the answer is.

Edit-Preferences-Color Management

You need to create a monitor profile. There are several programs
available to do this depending on your OS

Having created the profile, Edit-Preferences-Color Management and
selet the Monitor profile option and add your profile.

I'm creating some textures for 3d models using gimp. I've been

 you think is
the best setting to bring down the file size with no noticeable loss

Well, I would simply experiment and decide what is best for you

Open original, export as new-name1.jpg at say 70%
Then reopen original, and export as new-name2.jpg at say 60%
and so on

Most of my saves are at 50%

Why jpgs? What sizes do you get with pngs?

So, now that I have that, is there a tutorial for using it? ^_^

Best if you just experiment.

Try a new image, add some, say, 100pt text.

have the same paint tools, however when it comes to the smudge tool,
its just not giving the same effects as GIMP 2.6. Another thing which
is a huge asset to my cartoon uploads is that I find it hard to save
it into a JPG file. I don't understand why you have changed this, as I
use Facebook for promoting my stuff and now can't because I can't save
the files into JPG. ... I do manage to save some pics into JPG, but
its very hard to do.. Is there a better or lesser complicated and less
frustrating way to create files easily into JPG? I want the 2.6
version back.. That one was my fave.

Re: [Gimp-user] Framing Pictures

2013-11-15 Thread Owen

I would like to add frames to some of the graphics I'm using on a
website. The frame I want is really just a white border of 8 or 10
pixels on each of the four sides; the pictures will all be rectangles.

I tried doing a frame like this in Gimp 2.8 (in Windows 8) earlier
 today
and couldn't think of a way to do this very easily. I thought about
drawing a white line along the edge of each side of the rectangle but
didn't know a good way to draw a straight line of the desired
 thickness
exactly where I want it. I thought about using the eraser to turn the
edges white but that seemed clumsy.

I'm guessing there is a much simpler way so I hope someone can tell me
 what it is. :)

1.

Open image

Select-All
Select-Shrink (Select pixel size of shrink)
Ctrl+I (invert selection)
Bucket fill (Fill whole selection)

2.

Open image

Filters-Decor-Add Border

Also, if you are thinking publishing, perhaps you should think

Re: [Gimp-user] EXIF support in latest Gimp

2013-07-25 Thread Owen

Hello Owen, and thank you for your answer.

 $ exiftool _DSF2455.JPG |grep color
 Color Space : Uncalibrated

 $ exiftool DSCF2456.JPG |grep sRGB
 Color Space : sRGB
Interoperability Index : R98 - DCF basic file (sRGB)

So my guess is that your image does not contain that profile?

It doesn't. It is my understanding that most camera manufacturers
 don't
include a profile. They merely tag the colorspace, which makes sense
 if
it the profile is readily available.

OK,

Have a look at;

http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-pimping.html#gimp-prefs-color-management

Do you have color management activated in the preferences? Do you have
a monitor profile?

$ exiftool _DSF2455.JPG |grep Intero
Interoperability Index : R03 - DCF option file (Adobe RGB)
Interoperability Version: 0100

There should be many .icc files in /use/share/color/icc

I occasionally get an image sent to me with an embedded profile, gimp
asks me if sRGB will do to replace it.

Anyway, that's about the end of my knowledge.

Re: [Gimp-user] EXIF support in latest Gimp

2013-07-24 Thread Owen

 Dear Gimp community,

I would like to inquire about the state of the EXIF support in Gimp,
 as
 per the title.

It seems that Gimp 2.8.6 (Fedora 19) is ignoring the colorspace (Adobe
RGB) that is written by my camera as per the EXIF 2.21 specifications
(that is, setting the InteropIndex to 'R03' for Adobe RGB, see
 http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/EXIF.html)

It seems hard to find proper documentation (or even the 2.21
specifications online), but some software (e.g. Geeqie) manage to
 parse
the useful information very well (see
 https://gitorious.org/geeqie/geeqie/blobs/master/src/image.c#line288)

Is there a workaround for this? It cripples the Adobe RGB workflow to
 a
point I prefer sticking to sRGB for now, which is not ideal given that
printers and monitors keep improving in gamut.

 Here are two test files:
 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/176092/_DSF2455.JPG (Adobe RGB)
 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/176092/DSCF2456.JPG (sRGB)

$ exiftool _DSF2455.JPG |grep color
Color Space : Uncalibrated

$ exiftool DSCF2456.JPG |grep sRGB
Color Space : sRGB
Interoperability Index : R98 - DCF basic file (sRGB)

So my guess is that your image does not contain that profile?

This topic accidently started as reply to '[Gimp-user] PDF' and likes
 to
 be continued here.

 From: Henry W. Peters

 Hi,

Does anyone on the list here, have any actual knowledge or
 experience
building GIMP 2.8x on Linux Debian Squeeze? My current version of GIMP
 is 2.6.1.

Some questions I have (for example) are: Do I /really/ have to
 uninstall
the old version...? Any dependency issues (conflicts, etc.) ? Any way
 to
get the (newer) dependencies by means of the terminal? Will I be able
 to
actually do this (i.e.,/ do a working build with this version/)?

 Thanks much for any pointers.

You can build any number of gimps independent of each other.

First you need to understand that when you build something, it goes
hunting for libraries in a path specified by your environment.

So first thing to do is set the environment path for your console. Do
all your building out of the same console where these environment
variables have been set.

export PATH=/build_dir/gimp-2.8/bin:$PATH
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/build_dir/gimp-2.8/lib/pkgconfig
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/build_dir/gimp-2.8/lib

Now cd into your source directory and

./configure --PREFIX=/build_dir

Configure may fail, READ the message on failure.

If it tells you that gegl is the wrong version, download babl and gegl
and then build babl first, then gegl using ./configure
--PREFIX=/build_dir

Run configure again from your gimp source, now if it tells you that
GTK is the wrong version, download the latest glib, gtk, atk,
gtk-pixbuf and pango and build them, again with ./configure
--PREFIX=/build_dir

Actually if you follow this tutorial,
http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/compiling-gimp-for-ubuntu

you could build the git version but would not recommend that, but
rather apply the principles to the source code.

And when you finish, start the program from the console;
# /build_dir/bin/gimp-2.x

Note also that the build_dir should not be /usr/local but rather
something like ~/user/gimp-2.x

Re: [Gimp-user] Change the default Save extension

2013-04-23 Thread Owen

Is there any way to change the format that's the default save. I don't
use .xcf and prefer to use png or jpg. Why do I have to export them
instead of simply save? Why did they change it in this version? It's
 annoying.

This matter has been thrashed to death several times over the last
couple of years.

When I saw your message I thought you were a troll wanting to kick the
matter off again, but maybe you are sincere.

1. There will be no change to the save system.

2. Get used to it or move on.

And maybe read the archives of the list for somewhere between one and
two million other messages on this matter.

Re: [Gimp-user] Hello!

2013-04-21 Thread Owen

Hello all! I'm fairly new to GIMP and even after reading the user
 manual,
it stills seems to be written for someone with a Ph.D. What I'm trying
 to
do is to take a scanned hand drawn picture and trace over it to make a
brand new image that's cleaner and delete the scanned image from the
 whole
thing so that only the new, GIMP drawing is there. Remember, I need
 this to
be in layman's terms, please. I'm doing a google search to find some
tutorials that are easier to follow than the manual while I wait for a
 reply. Thanks!

Try righting on the image

Select Colors

Then select Threshold and see if you can adjust out the clutter.

Alternatively try Image-Colors-Curves and see if adjustment there
will clean it up for you

Lastly, try converting the image to indexed, Image-mode-Indexed and
set the number of colors to 2

You can keep your scanned image, once you clean it out, save it as an
xcf so you can do more work on it, then if you want a png or jpg, just
export it, File-Export to that format/file type

Re: [Gimp-user] Post GIMP File Management, Organizing Viewing/Simpler Alternatives Options PLEASE READ HELP!!! How Make .JPG Files More Like Tiles or Icons. Once Moved They Stay Set

2013-04-11 Thread Owen

 Hello Everyone,

Please Help Me! I am perplexed hungry for ideas. I have thousands of
 3x5 inch
index cards, all hand written cards. And I have learned how to use
 GIMP to scan
4 cards at a time, crop, guillotine the 4 cards to make 4 seperate
 .JPG files,
and then import to my PC (XP).

The cards will (I guess) be numbered like 001.jpg, 002.jpg like that.
 BUT this
current batch of cards are basically just things to do index cards,
 so I will
likely have 3 folders labeled by priority 1, 2, 3And inside these
 folders
are all my .JPG files depending on the priority of each things to do
 card.

And all these thousands of cards will be dragged and dropped or
 otherwise be
constantly moved and/or deleted by me constantly from folder to
 folder, keep in
mind each of these .JPG files is labeled/numbered.

So when I move them from one folder to another, there is
 labeling/numbering
conflicts, and the order and positioning will be lost.

What I was hoping for was some sort of a program/file manager whereby
 I can
treat the .JPG Files more like tiles or desktop icons, once moved
 they are
just there and do not move unless I move them and they do not get
 automatically
moved by my PC based on file name/number, yet still be able to move
 and/or
delete them from folder to folder without conflict.

I really need some thinking outside of the box options/ideas. Any
 alternative
file folder experts out there? Any file management/organizing
 programs out
 there? Please Help!

Use a program like shotwell and tag each file with its file name. Then
no matter where it is you can retrieve it from the tag.

The tag might also be useful for further identification of the cards

That seems strange, the standard installation sets the default grid to

Can you start gimp at the console, then open one of the offending

What does it say?

What is the output of this command # file xx.jpg

Also do you have imagemagick installed. What does # identify

Re: [Gimp-user] Question about the new sliders

2012-12-03 Thread Owen

 Hi,

I just upgraded to the new version of GIMP and I am having trouble
getting used
 to the new slider.

I notice that there are two cursors that appear while using the
new sliders.
One is an up arrow that allows me to quickly change from 0 - 100
(Like the old
slider) and another is the double side arrow cursor that makes
only small
 changes.

I can see how this is useful but I cant seem to figure out how to
get one to
show over the other. Currently I just swipe my mouse at the slider a
couple of
times till the right one doesn't show up. But clearly I am doing
something
wrong. Its hard for me to work with the two sided arrow as my
screen is very
small. (I am trying to adjust the opacity of the layer)

It would be very helpful to me if someone linked me to a page
 describing the new
 sliders.

The horozontial one appears when you are in the bottom 50% of the box,
the vertical one appears once you pass the 50% mark.

Just start at the bottom and move slowly up and you will see it change

You might be better off duplicating the text layer (maybe several
times) and adjusting the text to a selection of sizes for each layer.
Switch the visibility of the layers on and off as you try things out.

I have to delete the levels for this, edit the text and then create
 the

 can
edit the text and the effect together? Or better, a real editor with
 border
 an shadow effects?

You need to build things in the selected build directory, babl, gegl

If glib and gtk versions are too low, you need to build those and
their dependancies in the selected directory.

DO NOT BUILD IN /usr or /usr/local

Make sure that the console you are working is the console that you
have exported the paths as per the gimp users tutorial. That way,
looking for libraries ensures the first searched path is your build
directory, not /usr or /usr/local

Re: [Gimp-user] Batch mode ?

2012-04-13 Thread Owen

It appears to me that virtually every photograph I have ever
 manipulated
using GIMP has looked better after applying GIMP's
 Colors-Levels-Auto to it.

Now, I have a batch of about 80+ scans of old family photos that I
 would
like to apply this process to en mass.

If I wanted to script this, you know, so as to just apply
 Colors-Levels-Auto
to each one of about 80 .JPG files, in turn, yeilding one new output
 file
corresponding to each of the input files, but with levels adjusted,
 how would

You may want to look at David's Batch processor,
