Liam,

That's what I didn't find in the two sections of the manual I read. Now I

Liam,

I'm not finding an Options item in the Tools menu.

Using the rectangle select tool I enclose the text, select the text tool
option box, change the font size, and nothing changes in that layer on the
image.

Right-clicking on that layer in the layers display box I select Text Tool,
change the font size and nothing changes in the layer on that image.

What might I be missing here?

[Gimp-user] GIMP text editing help needed

2021-09-10 Thread Rich Shepard

Running gimp-2.8.18-x86_64-1_slack14.2 (on Slackware-14.2/x86_64).

I want to change the font sizes in the text in two layers over a background
image; the file format is .xcf. So I read Chapter 9 (Text Management) and
the text tool options in Section 5.6 online and both say that any change to
font size is immediately reflected on the layer. Not so here.

I changed one layer's text size from 24pt to 36pt and nothing happened. I
used both on-canvas and text editor approaches. Neither had a 'save' button
associated with it so making the changes did nothing.

All thoughts welcome!

[Gimp-user] Add traditional Linux Builds

2021-03-28 Thread Bill Rich via gimp-user-list
I understand why flatpak is easier to distribute, but I've had so many
problems using it with other applications, and using plugins, that I
finally uninstalled the flatpak version and went with the package from
https://ubuntuhandbook.org/.
It's great that there are volunteers that make this happen, but I would
rather have the official GIMP installs for Linux include traditional
packages as well as the flatpak. Flatpak works OK enough for dabblers, but
we also want to promote those who do more serious work with it.
Thank you

[Gimp-user] Editing/replacing text on .xcf image

2019-06-09 Thread Rich Shepard

Running gimp-2.8.18 on Slackware-14.2.

I have a single-layer image (in .xcf format) and I want to change some of
the text on the image while maintaining the same type face and font.

I tried selecting a text string using the rectangle selector then clicked on
the selected text with the Text tool selected. No joy there.

Please point me to the proper way of editing and replacing text strings in
this GIMP version.

A safer way is not a package, Gimp help in a PDF. Searchable and with an

Compat mode is off so often a script generates lots of error messages but gets

Easy enough to try out and revert to Gimp 2.8.x if not happy.

The original is an embedded raster image, no vectors involved.

Can I just point out that Gimp default value for opening a PDF is 100 ppi.
Which might/might not be the same as the original. Up to the user to adjust.

These values using linux pdfimages

  width height color enc ppi
-
Adobe: 2545 1491 rgbjpeg 300x301

Gimp: 848 497 gray image(png) 101x100

Hardly surprising the difference in quality.

Suggestion: Sometimes difficult to determine the original size of a raster
image in a PDF.
LibreOffice Draw usually plucks an image out in original size/format.
If the PDF contains a vector image, then use Inkscape.

Not possible without PS.
The image is not 8 layers. It is 2 layers + 6 fill layers (similar to
adjustment layers)

Even with PS it is not easy. The fill layers in that image will not rastorize.
You have to introduce a regular layer and merge down for each of the fill
layers.

I can reproduce that in a Win7 32 bit Vbox VM and Gimp 2.8.14 (with no
ghostscript installation)

It is a problem with libgs-8.dll (size 12,210,971 B)

Replacing this with the equivalent file from an earlier version of Gimp
(say 2.8.10, size 12,127,056 B ) and importing an .eps file now works.

The heal-selection plugin is python and that will work whatever. It
could be that the binary resynthesizer plug-in is the wrong 'flavour'
32 bit and should be 64 bit maybe or something else.

root is not the correct owner for files in your gimp profile ~/.gimp-2.8/
plugins.
phil should be in there as owner.

I think plug-ins should go in your Gimp profile. However if installed
from a package, they will end up in /user... Not a good idea to have
in both locations, AFAIK your Gimp profile takes precedence and that
has incorrect permissions.

One way for Ubuntu (is this the worst user distro in the world?)

Get rid of all the previous stuff.

open a terminal to get a root prompt: sudo -i (then password)
apt-getupdate
apt-get install gimp-plugin registry

screenshot: http://tinyurl.com/p3o8gbv

Unfortunately you get a whole load of other scripts and plugins, such
is the price.. but you do get heal-selection in Filters -> enhance
and you should see resynthesizer in Filters -> Map

That is a link to a torrent, where the file is partially downloaded from many

Remember the installation - Android.

I tried out the Gimp+Inkscape installation in an Asus TF101 (lived up to a
terrible reputation for reliably and died a couple of weeks ago)

GIMP is in an Ubuntu with a XFCE DE working in a virtual private network.

I never did find out where it was installed, I think that the android
device has to be 'rooted' to reach the installation. I have a note that for
fonts this is the place
Android/data/org.gimp.inkscape/files/gimp/fonts
Presumably replace 'fonts' with 'plug-ins'

The tools that come with android are less than wonderful, everything is
dumbed down.
Recommend a decent file manager TotalCommander which will also unpack those
TapeArchive (tar) files.

Here in linux, that file 'gimp-clt-v0.2-bin.tar' unpacks to clone-layer-
tool with permissions already set, so maybe one hurdle out of the way.

The correct way to go, for Gimp on a thumb drive, is use the portable
version - look for portableapps.com You can use this on a regular machine
as well.

Installing a regular Gimp to a thumb drive will leave a trail of a Gimp
profiles across the machines it runs on.

The regular installer contains both 32 and 64 bit versions. To install a 32
bit Gimp in a 64 bit Windows OS append the switch -32 to the end of the
installer.

ie. gimp-2.8.14-setup-1.exe -32

One peculiarity, Gimp is not installed to the 'Program Files (X86)' but to
the 64 bit 'Program Files' unless you make an effort and use the customise
option, bottom left of the Gimp setup dialog.

So in your case, point it at the thumbdrive and install there. Gimp is
naturally portable, copy the whole '\GIMP 2' folder tree, to the 32 bit
machine, make your own shortcut. No admin privilege might be a problem.

I wonder how many actually looked at your image. It is very small, so do not
expect a great result. Hope you have a larger, better version.

First thing, it is grayscale and to do any work on it, change the mode to RGB
(Image menu -> Mode).

As previous posts, Colors menu -> Color-to-Alpha will remove the gray
background, even using the default setting, and a Layer menu -> Transparency -
> Alpha-to-Selection will then select the pentagram for filling with a new
colour.

Big but...The quality of the posted jpeg is horrible, lots of artifacts
resulting in semi-transparent pixels all over. Tweaking with the curves tool
will improve the image. The only real way is to re-draw using the original as
a template. Not difficult, several ways to do it.
Using an old netbook and Gimp 2.6, in a few minutes while watching TV. Could
be better.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/dlc0ygm1ffcdv3w/penta.xcf
The top layer is plain, a second layer has been bumpmapped to give a more
'golden' effect.
Too many jaggies, that is what happens with small (200x200 pix) images.

As an alternative you could try a PDF version

The one from here http://gimp.linux.it/www/meta/ is up to date.

[Gimp-user] Where does GTK Print dialog get its defaults from?

2013-03-12 Thread Rich

Hi

As I understand, Gimp make GTK, used in Gnome. GTK provides a dialog for
selecting a printer and specifying the options for that printer. My
problem is that whenever I'm faced with this dialog, it's a completely
random set of settings; it's not the printer defaults (specified in
CUPS) and it's not the last-used settings either for the user or the
application.

It's a big productivity issue when I regularly print documents and high
res photos and need to change ~10 or so options each time. Invariably I
forget to change one of them and have to print something twice.

Is there any way to control these default print settings? Ideally I'd
like it to pick up the CUPS defaults for the print queue selected.

Thanks,
Rich

Another day another challenge, In case you have not already figured it out.

1. Gimp does not have a neutral tool as such, just select any other tool to
exit the text tool.

2. They should stick, do you mean that while using the text tool if you click
on the canvas to start new text the text properties revert back to those in the
text options dialog. That is normal.

If you go for CMYKTool, I compiled it (CMYKTool-016pre1) in linux but when it
comes to windows and Gimp 2.8.x then there are some adjustments to make.

The bat launcher is set up for gimp-2.0/-2.2/-2.4 and will need to be updated
to something like
PATH=%PROGRAMFILES%\gimp 2\bin;%PROGRAMFILES%\inkscape

A couple of file changes.
Does not seem to find libcairo-2.dll so *copy* this from the ...\gimp 2\bin
folder to the CMYK\bin folder
Requires libtiff3.dll which is now libtiff-3.dll so *copy* this from ...\gimp
2\bin to CMYK\bin and rename it.

All being well it should work.

You can use '-depth 16' which Gimp will open (and complain about) - it makes a

In Gimp I use Lanczos for resizing but;

[Gimp-user] Installing 2.8 on Windows XP SP2

>Al.

I seems just the installer. You can unpack the installation with 'universal
extractor' but this gives all the files for both 32 & 64 bit version to sort
out.

An easier way is to use a 'portable' version. There is a 2.8.0 at
portableapps.com and a 2.8.1 32 bit at the partha site (dark theme but if you
find a regular theme elsewhere you can change this).

Both of these install with the caveat that I did not give them much of a trial,
but they do open and the basics work. This is in a WinXp SP2 virtual machine.

If you ignore the 'portable' launcher(s) and go straight for gimp-2.8.exe in
the ...\bin... folder it makes a regular C:\Documents and
Settings\"yourname"\.gimp-2.8 home folder structure on first run.

Up to you to make a shortcut/menu entry.

There is a recent batch plugin, BIMP see:

Might work in Win7, there was some problem with win themes, might be fixed now.
Colorize works and changing name/output/type if required.

It very much depends on the image and the size of the dots.

The obvious is a mask of some sort but a quick solution might be

Filter -> generic -> dilate This shrinks everything by 1 pix around the
perimeter.

if the dots still show, do it again. If it takes more that that, give up now.

then

Filter -> generic -> erode this add a pix around a perimeter, match this with
the number of 'dilates'

If the the text or the box is small then chances are this will not work, you
destroy what you want to keep.

You would think that PS 'downscaling' is the same as Gimp rescale but I have
seen one PS article that rambled on about having a set of 'downscaled' images
for setting up a DP printed page. Once the page is set up the full size images
were substituted, why work this way I don't know, possibly commercial printers
prefer this.

So my take on the subject adds one step to resizing an image.
say original jpg image is 1500x1500 pix (file size 440 KB) resized to 500x500
pix (77 KB) if the print resolution (menu: Image -> Print Size) is set
respectively to 300 & 100 then normally, with gimp default settings, the size
difference is obvious. Turn off dot-for-dot (menu: view -> dot-for-dot) and the
two images display the same.

screen shots. http://i.imgur.com/jhd16.jpg

Best algorithm for regular resizing, some say, bicubic, some sinc, it is a
matter of preference.

Best compressed format for saving, obviously jpeg is lossy but it is universal
and if it is the final image, why not.

I think this is what you want. Started off with screenshots but easier to make
a video.

http://youtu.be/HlCEW8UOj4o about 3 mins

If it is, then get the Gimp script from

http://chiselapp.com/user/saulgoode/repository/script-fu/wiki?name=sg-warp-text

Read the info there as well.

Remember, once rendered the text is no longer editable as text - it is a
graphic.

Also worth thinking 'alternative' LibreOffice/OpenOffice/MSOffice all have a
'TextArt' function.
Make it there, save as a graphic file (say, png), import into Gimp.

The great thing about Gimp is there is always another way.

Have to confess, my first thoughts were with the G'mic plugin but maybe a
better way for your specific case is

Convert the image to indexed with a small number of colours
Edit the colour map so anything non green is (say) white
Back to RGB mode and colour-to-alpha to remove the white.

As you can see from the other posts this is not an easy task to explain.

I think the easiest way is to make a set of zigzag brushes.
so you would need to know how to make those, not so easy for a beginner
then use them to nibble away at the edges not as a brush but with the eraser
tool.

Other things you will need to know, how to add transparency.
something like this http://i.imgur.com/DKB8a.jpg

Then comes the drop shadow, gimp has this filter already.
but you will need to know how to make a selection and invert it.
Finally you might need to convert the transparency back to some other colour
(or not)

Don't normally bother with 'buntu but might be possible to run a scanner from
Xubuntu live.

A couple of caveats . Running Xubuntu from a USB memory stick rather than a CD.
 My scanner is USB driven

As my earlier post you need the xsane gimp plugin - got this from a Mepis 11
(debian squeeze) installation. The plugin is in /usr/bin and the gimp global
plugins directory has a symbolic link to it. Copied the plugin to a directory
on the usb containing the xubuntu installation. Also put the xscanimage plugin
there as well, although does not seem to work.

Started up the live xubuntu, then to gimp preferences and added the xsane
plugin directory.

Restarted gimp, and the scanner dialog is there in Gimp - File - Create and is
working.

Might be worth a try with a live CD and the new plugins folder on your hdd.

[Gimp-user] Scan

FWIW: I do not think you will get it working from a live CD.

First stop is to check the sane database

http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=&model=&bus=scsi&v=&p=

If your scanner is supported then you will need to install xsane from your
distribution repo.

Next step, Gimp needs a xsane-gimp plugin. Seems to be one for CentOS, bound
to be one for Ubuntu.

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/8078537/com/xsane-gimp-0.991-5.el5.i386.rpm.html

All being well, there is a menu entry in Gimp: 'File' -> 'Create' -> 'Xsane'
which calls xsane for scanning and passes the result back to Gimp.

Nothing to do with Gnome, Gimp help is all html, so the linux files are the
same as the windows files are the same as (KDE, E17, ... Gnome)

For on-line help use http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/ in your web browser to see if
you can connect.

For a locally installed help, check Gimp -> preferences -> help system and see
if local files are enabled and the correct browser is set.

AFAIK the location of the start up file for a local Gimp help should be
(depending on language)
/usr/share/gimp/2.0/help/en/index.html

As for being up to date, everything to do with how the slackware repo is
maintained. The Gimp 2.6 manual is work in progress so use the online version
if you need the latest. I think this is ver.2.6.1 and does not follow the Gimp
version number.

I don't bother these days with installing help but in the past when my
installed version was lagging behind, dumped the web site to a local drive with
wget -r -p -np http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/
then grafted the files into the Gimp help directory.

The obvious, Parthas is version 2.7.4 and the portableapps is 2.7.3

Installed in a winxp sp2 VM. Neither use win registry nor require a user .gimp
directory. Tried Parthas on a USB stick, not going to break any speed records.

Some stats, Partha includes locales by default whereas p_apps has extra
languages as an install option. Taking those out, Partha about 4500 files and
132MB p_apps 2300/125MB.

Starting up, Partha does not have the Gimp debug console showing, p_apps does

Partha has a black theme as default, popular these days, not my cup of tea, the
menu fonts in particular looks off. Easy to fix either with the included small
icons theme or just graft in a regular theme.

Python. Both have python installed. Partha includes a dozen extra python
plugins. In the winxp sp2 VM no python on either, the p_apps debug console says
"bad interpreter referenced ..." nothing obvious in Partha.

Giving them another chance, in my regular WinXP sp3 machine, which has a Gimp
2.6.11 +python installation, Partha python working, but the same error
messages for p_apps. Can't be bothered to sort it out.

Single window mode works for both, not that it is a big attraction for me, used
Gimp for some time now and I am comfortable with original format.

[Gimp-user] clicking rulers loses freehand selection

>(I know I can turn off the rulers, but it's annoying having to turn them
>off and on all the time since they are sometimes useful.)

Using Gimp 2.6.11 and PCLOS

What happens here.

This only happens if the image completely fills the window and with the
scissors or paths tools, the free select is not affected. A solution might be
to increase the size of the window so that there is a border. This does mean
that high zoom levels are not available.

Next strange effect. The path tool is ok, go into the border and the generated
selection follows the edge of the image. The scissors tool, going completely
into the border and the selection snaps to 9 pix into the image. Keeping the
tool exactly on the border even at high zoom does work.

I would say, maybe, if you are using high zoom so no border available + shaky
hand, then steer clear of the ruler and finish off with quick mask.
