Your blending mode set for the bucket fill tool is "Luz suave" (Soft
light). Changing it to "Normal" will fix the issue for you.

Can you clarify your post's text? I find it written in non-idiomatic and

Re: [Gimp-user] A problem

2020-04-05 Thread Ross Martinek
I’ve seen the same thing as Michael. However, at least in the Mac OS, my
experience is that it’s a bad idea for two reasons:

1. It’s very easy to inadvertently rename, move, misplace, or delete a file. I
only keep a few, generally temporary files on my desktop, files I intend to
throw away when I’m done with them. Even so, I’ve managed to do all of these
things at one time or another.

2. It seems that in the Finder (the real name and function of the so-called
“desktop”) is really a kind of limbo as far as the computer’s file structure is
concerned. The Mac OS is designed as a hierarchical file system, and should be
used as such. When a file is stored on the desktop (i.e., the Finder), it is
more likely to get lost in a crash or a disk problem. I have also experienced
this first hand. This is also a particular problem if there are multiple user’s
accounts.

Admittedly, other than inadvertent renaming, misplacing, or deletion, these
problems tend to be rare. They do happen.

When files are transferred to a new computer, files on the desktop are more
likely to be misplaced, or their address lost by the Finder, or corrupted. The
icon my remain on the desktop, but the actual file location isn’t “known” by
the Finder. The Mac OS is designed as a hierarchical file system, and should be
used as such.

I think the best and easiest solution to the original problem is to restore the
files from a backup. That was what I did when I had a similar problem. That was
when someone with far more knowledge of the Mac interface, a developer, told me
it was unwise to keep important files on the desktop.

Regardless of the platform, some people use the desktops as there main
file and folder storage location - I've seen desktops spanning multiple
screens, with icons everywhere, no free space left.

Other people use dedicated folders, sometimes even those the platform
suggests for these tasks.

It's mostly personal choice, like e.g. replying above or below quoted

Assuming we're not dealing with a broken system configuration here, then
GIMP should still work out of the box, and we have to figure out what's
causing this.

Might be that this is known and I missed that in the past few months, of
course.

hi wicky,
i've had the same problem before. for me it is a font problem. i use a mac
and use true type, open type and mac type1 fonts. when i install the type1
fonts, gimp breaks, if i place them in another directory and link to gimp

In the gimp, Save and Export are different things. If you save as
an xcf file, it should have all the layers. AFAIK a png file cannot
have layers - so to "save" to png (or jpeg) you have to use the
Export command. You will also find that xcf files are larger than
pngs, so make sure you have enough space on your filesystem
(probably not a big issue in 2.8, particularly if the dimensions of
the png are screen-size, but in 2.9 the xcf files are bigger - I've
filled up /home on one of my machines while editing photos and
saving xcfs (with different names) at various points).

This makes me wonder if the most recent package for OSX is being used

but not prefered ones) being selected for the UI language.

If a 640x400 canavas at 100% is taking almost the whole screen, you have

I'm not sure what you mean by I can see the text in the layer.
Are you saying you can see the text where it is the default name
of the layer in the layers dialog (usually in a separate window
to the right of the image window)?

Check to be sure your foreground color is different from the background
layer over which you are creating the text.

When you click to insert a text layer, that layer is inserted above
whatever the currently active layer is. If you want the text on top
of everything, make sure the active layer is the upper most one (the
top one in the layers dialog) before you activate the text tool and
click to insert text. Alternately, check to be sure there are no
other layers on top of the text layer.

This looks to me like the normal anti-aliasing that you get by default,
although it's a bit difficult to tell because the Calibri font is not
on my fbsd system. It you want a sharp transition from black to white,
deselect the anti-aliasing box in the font tool.

What exactly do you mean by pixelated?
All text will appear pixelated if enlarged, which this image has been.
What are you expecting it to look like?

The font box above the text indicates a size of 100 pts,
which that text clearly is not -- assuming the rulers are set in inches.
The font tool on the left says 18 pt, which it appears to match better.

Can you post an image made with the Sans font, and post the image itself,
not a screen shot?

The one thing which looks strange to me is that letters such as 'i', which
in some fonts such as Sans has solely vertical and horizontal lines,
appears anti-aliased. Since I don't have the Calibri font I'm not sure what
it *should* look like. In the Sans font an i has sharp transitions from
black to white, even with anti-aliasing on.

Exporting to jpeg will never improve pixelation issues. In general,
converting to jpeg will soften transitions.

I'm sorry but I'm not getting the behaviour you're describing. When I
launched GIMP and tried the Tab key, nothing happened. I did find the
tool options, brushes, etc. under Dockable Dialogs. Single Window Mode
did NOT put the dockables together with the tools all in one window; I
got the tools but not the dockable dialogs. (I was able to drag
individual dockable dialogs over to the area under the tools but I still
didn't see where I could choose between background, foreground and
pattern for the Paint tool.

So I uninstalled GIMP 2.8.2 and installed 2.8.10 - and found that it
looks exactly the same thing as it did before the uninstall/reinstall.
What is the deal here? Has this become the way these things will appear
going forward? Maybe I didn't click on something to cause this after all
and the problem began when I installed GIMP 2.8.x. I've forgotten now as
it was several months ago and I don't use GIMP that frequently.

If this is the way it is going to be and I can't go back to the old way,
how on earth do I choose a pattern for the Paint dialog, rather than a
foreground or background color? That's far from the only thing I want to
be able to do but it's certainly one of the things that I don't know how
to do in this new approach. And how do I remove one of the dockable
dialogs from the area underneath the selection tools? I can add one
easily enough but don't see any way to remove one that I don't really
need. Oh, hold on, I think I got it. If I click on the tiny Configure
this tab icon, I can detach the tab, then close it. But I can't delete
the last tab and I can't re-add the dock with the other tabs; I have to
put them in a new dialog

This is NOT making my day, at least not in a good way. This is really
unintuitive. I never had any problems with the old way  of doing things;
it was simple and straight-forward. Once again, developers go ahead and
do something that THEY think is an improvement but don't let happy users
keep the old way that suited them Ar!

Let me emphasize that my issue is not with Chris who tried to help but
with whoever decided to change the old way of doing things and
consequently made something tedious and mysterious out of something that
had been straight-forward.

Re: [Gimp-user] Toolbox problem

2014-03-04 Thread Joao S. O. Bueno
 1) how on earth do I choose a pattern for the Paint dialog, rather than a
 foreground or background color?

Go to edit -preferences-toolbox - there are 3 checkboxes where you
choose what will be displayed beneath the tools on the toolbox. Be
sure to enable the Show active brush, pattern gradient option.

That's far from the only thing I want to be able to do but it's certainly one
of the things that I don't know how to do in this new approach.
 2) And how do I remove one of the dockable dialogs from the area underneath
 the selection tools?

Just click on the tab of the dockable you are interested in, and drag
it to where you want it. Not related with arranging the docks: if you
double click on any tool icon on the toolbox, the tool options dialog
will open and apear, regardless of it not being visible before.

As for the other tabs thing: they really are not hard to figure out,
and seem way more consistent than I had seen in other program. I am
not sure if you already found out that if you click on the small
triangle at the right of the tabs in a dock dialog, you get a
tab-menu, with several options, including closing the current tab, or
opening any other.

One you find out an optimal configuration for your work, please note that in
the Preferences dialog, Window management tab, there is an option to
save the dockable dialogs as they are now.

Best regards,
