RE: [GO] list archives turning up on google - FAO Admin

2004-11-15 Thread Anita Graham

I apologise that I didn't specifically mention that the messages would be
googleable. It seemed to be obvious to me, as did the fact that they would
be publicly available. That *is* the point of mail.archive.com.

However, I did say "let's see how this goes", so as it is obviously not
acceptable to everyone we'll turn it off, and look for another way of making
the archives searchable. I do agree that privacy should have priority over
convenience.

[GO] ADMIN: moderation

2004-11-15 Thread Anita Graham

Do you know that when I announced the moderation policy I seriously thought
it might never be invoked!

Please address all questions about the moderation policy to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (This will include all admins)
All discussion of the US elections should cease now.

Claire's unfortunate post to the list will be dealt with off-line.

A note of hope...another list I'm on had a similar incident. We are still
going two years later.

RE: [GO] Getting OT? GO Admin

2004-11-13 Thread Anita Graham

As the person who made the proposal, then announced it, I need to say that
it is intended as a last resort. This is not about the normal OT
discussions, which have been a part of girlsown since day 3, I think.

This is about a temporary sanction to be used when people ignore the list
admin's request to stop a discussion. That happens very rarely as it is, and
having the request ignored is even rarer. The Uber-Prefect and admin group
is unchanged and there are no plans to change the way the group works - when
it works.

A person who is being moderated can still post to the list, but their posts
will be checked to ensure they aren't continuing a discussion that should
have stopped. They will be notified when a post is being held and again if a
post is being rejected. So, yes, Diane, this is censorship. But it is not
secret censorship.

There is a group of admins, so a person who felt they were being unfairly
censored would have a group of people who they could appeal to.

Some of the moderated newsgroups on the net have set up unbelievably
elaborate moderation systems, including appeals and oversight committees,
and alternate non-moderated groups and websites where rejected posts can be
viewed. I don't think girlsown needs this - for the most part it is a group
which is remarkably free from conflict.

[GO] ADMIN: new moderation policy

2004-11-11 Thread Anita Graham
Dear girlsown,

I'm popping up briefly to announce a new girlsown administration policy.

When the Head Prefect (or other admin person) has asked that a discussion be
stopped, or declared it off-limits we will allow a reasonable amount of time
for the announcement to percolate through everyone's email systems.

If, after that time, a list member continues to post on that subject we will
change their list status to "moderated". This means that all their posts
will be held pending administration approval. Moderation will give list
admins the ability to enforce the request to stop a discussion. Anything the
list member posts which is still on topic will be approved as soon as
possible. Unacceptable posts will be rejected with an explanation sent to
the poster. I would expect that the moderation period would be something
like a week.

May I emphasise that moderation is intended to be a tool to help us control
discussions which have got out of hand. It is something that will happen
behind the scenes.

A list member who is being moderated will be notified each time a post is
held for approval. They may notice a delay in posts appearing on the list if
an administrator is not available right away. Girlsown administrators will
be notified that there is a post waiting for approval. The general list
should not notice anything at all.

I have set my own status to moderated, so this message has passed through
the moderation process.
(Exciting! While the message was waiting for approval, I was notified AND I
was offered the opportunity to cancel the message. This is the second time
I'm sending this message out.)

Thanks to all girlsown members for maintaining such a great list atmosphere
99.999% of the time.

Anita Graham

RE: [GO] Archive download format

2004-11-06 Thread Anita Graham
I have subscribed girlsown to the mail-archive. This means that it should
now start receiving girlsown mail, and begin archiving it (and making it
searchable) in a few days. Let's see how it goes
