Gitorious version 3 will support Ruby 1.9, so this dependency will be gone in a few weeks. The current master branch works best with REE, so I'd definitely recommend going with that until 3.0 is ready. You can use standard Ruby 1.8.7. When Gitorious 3 is released in a few weeks, we will be recommending 1.9.3.
