[Gluster-users] Signing off from Gluster
It's been a delight to work with this community for the past few years, and as of today, I'm stepping away for a new opportunity. Amar Tumballi has already taken up several of the community initiatives that were in flight. You've already seen his work in creating new communication channels and meeting times, and I look forward to seeing what he does in the future! Mike Perez, the Ceph Commmunity Lead, has graciously volunteered to support the community in the interim, and he's copied on this message as well. Stormy Peters, the Community Team Manager is also available for questions. Thank you all! -- amye -- Amye Scavarda | a...@redhat.com | Gluster Community Lead ___ Gluster-users mailing list Gluster-users@gluster.org https://lists.gluster.org/mailman/listinfo/gluster-users

Re: [Gluster-users] Community Meeting, Tomorrow - Dec 5 at 15:00 UTC
So the agenda for today's meeting has some questions, but unfortunately, we don't have the maintainers group online to be able to assist. Here's what's come up: - gluster-prometheus-exporter: the git tag still refer to 0.3dev, when a final first release would be available? what are the targeted components metrics of such release and next? - gluster-block: benchmark reporting: couldn't find anything online, what expectations should we have? - glusterd2: any timeline of when would be production ready? - glusterfs: running glusterfs on high spec HW is it a waste of resources or there are plans for optimizations? NVDIM support? NVME drives etc - georeplication: implementation and monitoring seems to be challenging what is the vision? - heketi coming up features? Putting this on the mailing list for larger visibility. - amye On Tue, Dec 4, 2018 at 10:39 AM Amye Scavarda wrote: > https://bit.ly/gluster-community-meetings has an agenda, but should we > postpone these to January? > > If we were to replace the Community Meetings with a video call to present > current work, would that be more effective? [Gluster-users] Minutes from Community Meeting, September 12th, 15:00 UTC
Attendees: amye, sankarshan, jstrunk, loadtheacc, spisla80, shyam Agenda: How are the releases planned coming along? [sankarshan - for someone from TLC] See email from 10 September ( https://lists.gluster.org/pipermail/gluster-devel/2018-September/055374.html), but tracking for an early October release for 5. Needs more documentation, but the release is more focused around stability and code health. The “GCS” email barely had any discussion on mailing lists - are there unresolved questions? [sankarshan - for audience] This is likely a Vijay question, will hold for next meeting on 26 Sept. Is it possible to have someone from Glusto test framework team share current topics/roadmap with community [sankarshan - for a Glusto maintainer] - Loadtheacc (Jonathan Holloway) to provide an update on gluster-devel. mountpoint.io - going around the table feedback? [sankarshan - for participants if folks do join] - amye to start a thread on -users Other items: CSI from Jstrunk: Work is going on for a file-based (FUSE) CSI driver, targeting GD2. As we get a GCS implementation available for initial preview, there should be more announcements about this. Next Gluster Summit EU: Nothing planning, but DevConf.cz and FOSDEM are coming up in Jan/Feb 2019. Next community meeting is 26 September in #gluster-meeting, 15:00 UTC. [Gluster-users] Gluster.org Blog - Call for Posts: Sept 11-30
We're putting out a call for posts for the Gluster.org blog over the next few months. Within the gluster ecosystem, we have a social-me...@gluster.org list to help highlight posts, whether that's something that's already posted elsewhere on the web or something that should go on the main gluster.org blog. However, the social-media@ list has editors on it as well to help your content get out there! What are we looking for? Gluster-related topics! Specifically, if you submitted an abstract for a conference and are still interested in writing on that topic, this is a great place for you! This will also help with upcoming calls for papers, like DevConf.CZ/FOSDEM. (October 26 for DevConf.cz, FOSDEM may have a Software Defined Storage DevRoom) This can also include: case studies, problems you've run into with Gluster and resolved, features you're working on that you'd like to describe in more detail. Let me know if you have questions, this call for posts runs from September 11th through September 30th. After that, I'll work with interested folks to edit and publish to the gluster.org blog. [Gluster-users] Updated Gluster Releases
*The Gluster community has released an out-of-normal-cadence release for Gluster 3.12, and 4.1 that resolves a CVE[1]. A privilege escalation flaw was found.Glusterfs is vulnerable to privilege escalation on gluster server nodes. An authenticated gluster client via TLS could use gluster cli with --remote-host command to add it self to trusted storage pool and perform privileged gluster operations like adding other machines to trusted storage pool, start, stop, and delete volumes. Installing the updated packages and restarting gluster services on gluster brick hosts, will help prevent the security issue. Further information can be found at NVD[2].Our recommendation is to upgrade to these new releases: https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.12/3.12.11/ <https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.12/3.12.9/>https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/4.0/4.1.1/ <https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/4.0/4.0.2/> [1] http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2018-10841 <http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2018-10841> [2] https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2018-10841 <https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2018-10841> * -- Amye Scavarda | a...@redhat.com | Gluster Community Lead ___ Gluster-users mailing list Gluster-users@gluster.org https://lists.gluster.org/mailman/listinfo/gluster-users

[Gluster-users] Updated Gluster Releases
The Gluster community has released an out-of-normal-cadence release for Gluster 3.10, 3.12, and 4.0 that resolves a CVE[1] that has been classified as Important. A privilege escalation flaw was found in the gluster snapshot scheduler. Any gluster client allowed to mount gluster volumes could also mount shared gluster storage volumes and escalate privileges by scheduling malicious cronjobs via symlink. Beyond installing the new release, additional mitigation would include limiting exposure of gluster server nodes by these practices: Gluster server should be on LAN and not reachable from public networks. Use gluster auth.allow and auth.reject. Use TLS certificates between gluster server nodes and clients. Please note: these practices would only mitigate attacks from unauthorized malicious clients. Gluster clients allowed by auth.allow or having signed TLS client certificates would still be able to trigger this attack. Further information can be found about CVE-2018-1088 from the MITRE CVE database.[2] Our recommendation is to upgrade to these new releases: https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.10/3.10.12/ https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.12/3.12.9/ https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/4.0/4.0.2/ [1] https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/cve-2018-1088 [2] http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2018-1088 -- Amye Scavarda | a...@redhat.com | Gluster Community Lead ___ Gluster-users mailing list Gluster-users@gluster.org http://lists.gluster.org/mailman/listinfo/gluster-users
[Gluster-users] Project Technical Leadership Council
April 25, 2018 In order to continue the momentum that Gluster has seen over the last few years, we've formed a project technical leadership council to replace our current single project lead. The Technical Leadership Council will provide broad oversight and direction for the project as a whole. As Gluster has grown, it is no longer feasible to have one person be responsible for direction and leadership. The Project Technical Leadership Council will meet on a regular basis to discuss both technical issues and project issues, such as outreach, advocacy and other open source community issues. The council is responsible for making larger technical decisions for the project. This includes accepting or removing subprojects, setting the direction for the project on a general basis, and resolving conflicts as they arrive. We want to involve and invite more contributors to be involved in a strategic and technical way. The Project Leadership Council is: - Vijay Bellur - Amar Tumballi - Shyam Ranganathan - Jeff Darcy - John Strunk - Amye Scavarda, Gluster Community Lead This council is chaired by the Gluster Community Lead, Amye Scavarda, in an administrative capacity. To reach the Project Technical Leadership Council, please email t...@gluster.org This council will begin by meeting quarterly and will be consulted on an as-needs basis. [Gluster-users] Fwd: Upgrade Gluster 3.7 to 3.12 and add 3rd replica [howto/help]
Just making sure this gets through. -- Forwarded message -- From: Martin Toth Date: Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 9:17 AM Subject: Upgrade Gluster 3.7 to 3.12 and add 3rd replica [howto/help] To: gluster-users@gluster.org Cc: Marek Toth , a...@redhat.com Hello all fellow GlusterFriends, I would like you to comment / correct my upgrade procedure steps on replica 2 volume of 3.7.x gluster. Than I would like to change replica 2 to replica 3 in order to correct quorum issue that Infrastructure currently has. Infrastructure setup: - all clients running on same nodes as servers (FUSE mounts) - under gluster there is ZFS pool running as raidz2 with SSD ZLOG/ZIL cache - all two hypervisor running as GlusterFS nodes and also Qemu compute nodes (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS) - we are running Qemu VMs that accesses VMs disks via gfapi (Opennebula) - we currently run : 1x2 , Type: Replicate volume Current Versions : glusterfs-* [package] 3.7.6-1ubuntu1 qemu-* [package] 2.5+dfsg-5ubuntu10.2glusterfs3.7.14xenial1 What we need : (New versions) - upgrade GlusterFS to 3.12 LTM version (Ubuntu 16.06 LTS packages are EOL - see https://www.gluster.org/community/release-schedule/) - I want to use https://launchpad.net/~gluster/+archive/ubuntu/glusterfs-3.12 as package repository for 3.12 - upgrade Qemu (with build-in support for libgfapi) - https://launchpad.net/~monotek/+archive/ubuntu/qemu-glusterfs-3.12 - (sadly Ubuntu has packages build without libgfapi support) - add third node to replica setup of volume (this is probably most dangerous operation) Backup Phase - backup "NFS storage” - raw DATA that runs on VMs - stop all running VMs - backup all running VMs (Qcow2 images) outside of gluster Upgrading Gluster Phase - killall glusterfs glusterfsd glusterd (on every server) (this should stop all gluster services - server and client as it runs on same nodes) - install new Gluster Server and Client packages from repository mentioned upper (on every server) - install new Monotek's qemu glusterfs package with gfapi enabled support (on every server) - /etc/init.d/glusterfs-server start (on every server) - /etc/init.d/glusterfs-server status - verify that all runs ok (on every server) - check : - gluster volume info - gluster volume status - check gluster FUSE clients, if mounts working as expected - test if various VMs are able tu boot and run as expected (if libgfapi works in Qemu) - reboot all nodes - do system upgrade of packages - test and check again Adding third node to replica 2 setup (replica 2 => replica 3) (volumes will be mounted and up after upgrade and we tested VMs are able to be served with libgfapi = upgrade of gluster sucessfuly completed) (next we extend replica 2 to replica 3 while volumes are mounted but no data is touched = no running VMs, only glusterfs servers and clients on nodes) - issue command : gluster volume add-brick volume replica 3 node3.san:/tank/gluster/brick1 (on new single node - node3) so we change : Bricks: Brick1: node1.san:/tank/gluster/brick1 Brick2: node2.san:/tank/gluster/brick1 to : Bricks: Brick1: node1.san:/tank/gluster/brick1 Brick2: node2.san:/tank/gluster/brick1 Brick3: node3.san:/tank/gluster/brick1 - check gluster status - (is rebalance / heal required here ?) - start all VMs and start celebration :) My Questions - is heal and rebalance necessary in order to upgrade replica 2 to replica 3 ? - is this upgrade procedure OK ? What more/else should I do in order to do this upgrade correctly ? Many thanks to all for support. Hope my little preparation howto will help others to solve same situation. [Gluster-users] Gluster Monthly Newsletter, August 2017
Gluster Monthly Newsletter, August 2017 -- Great news! We’ve released 3.12! https://www.gluster.org/3-12/announcing-glusterfs-release-3-12-0-long-term-maintenance/ This is a major release that will be Long Term Stable. Notable feature highlights are: - Ability to mount sub-directories using the Gluster native protocol (FUSE) - Brick multiplexing enhancements that help scale to larger brick counts per node - Enhancements to gluster get-state CLI enabling better understanding of various bricks and nodes participation/roles in the cluster - Ability to resolve GFID split-brain using existing CLI - Easier GFID to real path mapping thus enabling diagnostics and correction for reported GFID issues (healing among other uses where GFID is the only available source for identifying a file) Gluster Summit 2017 Schedule is out! https://www.gluster.org/events/summit2017 has the details. We’re excited to see everyone there! If you’re applying for travel, our funding deadline is September 8th at midnight Pacific. We'll still use the GitHub issue queue as a method of tracking improvements/bugs/feature requests , but I'd like to get us to a place where we have a WordPress theme that people can contribute to and code for custom plugins that we've developed. I'll be looking for volunteers that can edit content directly as well. [Gluster-users] [gluster-devel][gluster-users] Usability Initiative for Gluster: Documentation
One of the things that we're taking on for Gluster as a project is improving our usability overall - user experience, developer experience, contributor experience. We want Gluster to be fun to work with. As part of this, we'll be working on improving our overall documentation. Improving documentation is one of our big focuses as a project as we move into being more friendly to containers overall, through improving the table of contents, the style guide for how we're communicating with our users and outlining a better template structure for contribution. Finally, we'll be looking to match the look and feel of our new website as well. How is this happening? We'll be creating another branch to make these changes without changing our current documentation. However, we're going to need your help - as you're creating documentation now, please check with either myself, Amar or Nithya so that we can keep release notes running in tandem for the new changes happening in the new structure, and what needs to be moved over from the current structure. We'll be manually diffing these as we work on going live with the new structure. This is of vital importance for us as a project and it's something we've been looking at for a long time. Our timelines for this are the next month to six weeks, and we'll be in a better place with our documentation to improve from here. [Gluster-users] Call for Papers, Red Hat Summit
One of the big events for the year is the Red Hat Summit, which has a dedicated open source community track for upstream projects. At the very least this is an opportunity to give a "state of the union" talk for the various communities, including Gluster. There are a significant number of downstream-related talks for Summit, but if you would like to submit a Gluster-related talk for the open source community track[1] before the CFP for Summit closes on Dec. 16, please do so! My guess is that the holidays are upon us, and we're not in a great place to try and push a lot of discussion for the next six weeks. This is normal and expected, we'll do what we can around this. I think we can keep the same format but change two things: Post the agenda at the top of the meeting instead of the link Ask for a new meeting host at the end of the meeting Reasons: * Agenda wakes everyone up and keeps us on track * New Meeting Host doesn't get enough time for volunteers if it's at the top of the hour Thoughts? - amye > > The meeting agenda and updates for the week are archived at [1]. [Gluster-users] Announcing Gluster 3.9
The Gluster community is pleased to announce the release of Gluster 3.9. This is a major release that includes a number of changes. Many improvements contribute to better support of Gluster with containers and running your storage on the same server as your hypervisors. Additionally, we've focused on integrating with other projects in the open source ecosystem. This releases marks the completion of maintenance releases for Gluster 3.6. Moving forward, Gluster versions 3.9, 3.8 and 3.7 are all actively maintained.
