installing Linux by floppy to get driver

2002-09-28 Thread Erik Price

I have a friend at work who has an older i486 and wants to install
Linux onto it, perhaps to run Apache or something. The problem is that
he doesn't have the CD ROM driver for it. I know that the IDE driver
is built into the Linux kernel (or I think it is), but his is a SCSI
model -- it's a Digital Celebris model, or something like that.

Since he can't use the CD ROM drive, he can't install Linux by CD. We
found a floppy-based distro called DLX
(http://www.wu-wien.ac.at/usr/h93/h9301726/dlx.html), which I was
thinking could get Linux up and running, but how to get him the SCSI
CD-ROM driver? Once the CD drive works, we can just install a regular
distribution or something.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Erik

Does he have a supported network card in the machine? If so, you could
always do an nfs install. I've done a bunch of these with Redhat, and
it's always worked great.

Of course, this assumes you have a second box you can use as the nfs
server.

I *think* that Red Hat's standard boot floppy (boot.img) supports SCSI
cards CD-ROMs. You may need one of the supplemental driver disks
(drvblock, oldcdrom, etc) as well, but I don't think so. I'd create the
boot floppy and see what it detects.
There may be an issue with the age of the CD drive, though. Many older
drives can't read recordable discs. Again, the easiest way to find out is
to try it.

Someone mentioned in passing that 8.0 would be out very soon, so I took
a look at ftp.redhat.com and saw that the 8.0 directory exists, chmod'ed
as 700. In the past, the release came very soon after the directory
appeared, presumably after the official mirrors had been given enough time
to mirror the new release.

So I expect to see the release very soon, long before the BLU Installfest
which is scheduled for October 26.

Selections from the release notes that I _definately_ didn't download
from a mirror site that leaked the distro early:

* A new installation type called Personal Desktop is available
Workstation installation type has been redesigned for ... software
  development or system administration
* It is now possible to specify the boot order of your drives (during
  installation)
* The installation program automatically configures a USB mouse ...
whenever a USB mouse is inserted, it will be functional
* It is now possible to install from an FireWire(TM) CD-ROM
* Logical Volume Management (LVM) configuration is now available during
  installation
* The OpenOffice.org office suite is now included
* Due to patent licensing ... mp3 support has been removed
* Red Hat Linux now uses Xft for fonts
* GNOME 2.0 is now included and contains ... anti-aliased fonts
* XFree86 3.3.6 video hardware support has now been removed
* GCC has been updated to version 3.2
* glibc has been updated to version 2.3
* Perl has been updated to version 5.8
* Apache HTTP server has been updated to version 2.0
* The Netscape(TM) Web browser has been removed
* RPM will suggest package(s) that will satisfy unresolved dependencies
* contains the following new configuration and system tools: log viewer,
nfs config, x config, sound card config, language selection, package
  management

These are just the points that I've actually experienced during the
beta testing. There are a lot of other changes, for better or worse.
Overall it looks very nice based on the late stages of the beta cycle.
The official release is (according to almost every source) 30 Sep, or
in about 23 hours.
