Yah, weird, it works on my Linux box at home, too, but it didn't
with Firefox at work. (But it did work in MSIE 6.) *shrug*

I tried ies4linux. It fools Lotus Domino, just enough to get in. I can
see the email again. It is clunky and slowish, but it works well
enough. Thanks to everyone who suggested it.

As an extra bonus I was treated to a classic "I'm sorry but we need to
shutdown Internet Explorer" window already! Back to the old days! What
a treat!

Great! I can work again ;)

I used to do that, but I was never satisfied with the performance.
More recently I ran across Synergy, and I found that I liked it much
better than rdesktop.

Now I have a WinXP netbook with a large external monitor next to
my Linux desktop at work, and I use synergy to share the keyboard
and mouse across the two systems. I do the same at home, between
my Linux desktop and my MacOS desktop.

If this is an in-house workstation, why not run the Lotus Notes client for
Linux on it? At least they make a thick client :) I know that's not a
web-based solution, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

Yes, that's what I meant.

There's a tradition of this. There's a web browser for the Newton that was
able to render lots of sites by "lying" like this. In fact, there's a
browser out there that has been lying since the beginning that it's Mosaic
and it has a large market share ;-)

YMMV with an agent switcher. If the site uses the agent to determine what
code to feed (javascript, ActiveX) like it's supposed to, it won't work. If
it uses the agent to say "we don't work on your browser" even though it's
generic HTML, it won't work.

I don't know if Wine will install & run IE, but that may be an option.

Have a Windows XP Pro system, connect to it w/ rdesktop and do all your
Windows stuff there (that's what I do for Exchange/Sharepoint/Visio/etc &
it works well).

Install VirtualBox/VMware/KVM and run Windows inside that. You can run
VirtualBox headless and rdesktop to that. I've done that at home
successfully. You can have it grab a regular IP from the LAN and IT can
admin it just like every other system on the net when it's running.

I use and like the User Agent Switcher extension for Firefox but
I don't think it'll help in this case. I say that because I find
that Firefox on Linux can talk to my employer's Exchange server if I
instruct it to ID itself truthfully, but if I tell it to lie and ID
itself as Internet Exploder the server apparently tries to feed it
all kinds of crap that require ActiveX and such, so I suspect he'll
not find joy using that approach.

Way to make Firefox appear to Website as IE6 ?

2009-07-15 Thread bruce . labitt
This is a somewhat desperate request... OK, not desperate, but I would
like to resolve this...

Most of my work these days is on my linux workstation doing large scale
simulations. In addition to straining my brain molecules, I need, on
occasion, to access my email. Unfortunately the interface is IE centric.
(Lotus Notes - please no groans...) I used to be able to connect to LN
thru a webmail interface. Sometime after June 26th (I was on vacation at
the time) the webmail interface no longer works on FireFox running under
Ubuntu 8.10.

When I enquired, I was told that Webmail only supports IE. My local IT
guy, who is quite sympathetic, but powerless against the IT Overlords,
tested the Firefox interface from Windows and found it "inoperable". (Just
like on the linux side...)

So does anyone have a solution or suggestion I could try? Is there a
module/plugin/addon or whatever that makes FF behave like IE6 to an IE
centric application or website? Searching on addons.mozilla.org wasn't
fruitful for me. Maybe someone has better search-fu ?

A different browser is not out of the question, although not preferred.
IIRC didn't Konqueror have an IE mode?
