I think "social" meetings come with two major caveats
1) You can't have a beer at Morse Hall. That's obvious, so what I'm really
saying is that venue choices and meeting styles go hand in hand. It can be
hard to have a conversation in a pub or restaurant. That's what made
Martha's so great: private/quiet room with option to have a beer.
2) Limited spare time always makes socials more "optional" than a meeting
where you are saying to yourself, "I'd really like to get the chance to
learn about X" I've gone to many meetings where I already know the subject
just to get another perspective on it.
So, I think meeting topics are a good thing and help GNHLUG. When you can
have a meeting and a post-meeting beer / social I think it works well.
That's what we used to do with BostonPHP. Of course, anyone who has ever
arranged speakers will tell you that it takes a good deal of work to keep a
calendar of speakers lined up (not to mention the preparation by the
speaker).
