Sez the wiki (http://wiki.gnhlug.org/twiki2/bin/view/Www/SLUG):
# NH seacoast area and UNH (Durham)
# Website: http://slug.gnhlug.org/slug
# Meetings
* Second Monday of the month
* 7:00 PM
* Room 301, Morse Hall, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH

I've always been able to find parking by driving south along
the campus street which puts Morse Hall on my left and looking
on the right... there's a lot essentially across the street
from Morse Hall. Couldn't be more convenient. (I think the
signs suggest that campus parking-permit rules apply, but
I've never heard of there being a problem.)

Re: LUG meetings and topics

2010-05-08 Thread Greg Rundlett (freephile)
I think "social" meetings come with two major caveats
1) You can't have a beer at Morse Hall. That's obvious, so what I'm really
saying is that venue choices and meeting styles go hand in hand. It can be
hard to have a conversation in a pub or restaurant. That's what made
Martha's so great: private/quiet room with option to have a beer.
2) Limited spare time always makes socials more "optional" than a meeting
where you are saying to yourself, "I'd really like to get the chance to
learn about X" I've gone to many meetings where I already know the subject
just to get another perspective on it.

So, I think meeting topics are a good thing and help GNHLUG. When you can
have a meeting and a post-meeting beer / social I think it works well.
That's what we used to do with BostonPHP. Of course, anyone who has ever
arranged speakers will tell you that it takes a good deal of work to keep a
calendar of speakers lined up (not to mention the preparation by the
speaker).

Re: LUG meetings and topics

2010-05-08 Thread Jon 'maddog' Hall
>1) You can't have a beer at Morse Hall.

As odd as this sounds coming from me, I feel that having beer at the
event itself is bad for two reasons:

- underage people may feel awkward or unwanted
- there are various people who are not drinkers and don't want to
associate with people drinking, or have their under-age children
associating at an event where alcohol is consumed.

I am less concerned with the second group than the first one.

Having beer before the event (as at dinner) or after the event (as in
downstairs at Martha's) is of course anyone's prerogative, but I often
felt ill at ease with having beer at the meetings at Martha's when there
were underage people there.

Y'all know I drink, so "demon rum" is not the issue with me, but making
others uncomfortable at a FOSS event is an issue.

My two cents.
