Boston Linux and Unix InstallFest XL REMINDER Tomorrow Saturday June 4, 2011

2011-06-03 Thread Jerry Feldman
Boston Linux Installfest XL
When: Saturday June 4, 2011 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Where: MIT Building E-51, Room 061
   2 Amherst St, Cambridge
Plenty of free parking in front of the building.

What you need to bring: Your computer, monitor, power strips and your
Linux distributions. We do have copies of some distributions.
In general we have expertise with most distros, but if you need special
expertise, please email the BLU discussion list in advance. Today, most
distros are using Live CDs that you can try out and then install.
Additionally, CD images can be pushed onto USB sticks using various USB
creators.

COST: It's free! However, we DO have expenses, and contributions are
welcome. Please consider contributing $25 per machine.

Our volunteers will help you to install Linux on your own system. While
Linux runs on most systems, some systems do have configurations and
hardware that may not be supported. Please consult the following web
pages for hardware compatibility. While we prefer you to bring your own
distros, our volunteers will normally have

  Linux Howto Pages: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html
  Linux Frequently Asked Questions: http://tldp.org/docs.html#faq
Additionally, there are forums and listservs for most distros.

Generally our volunteers have sets of the latest Fedora, SuSE and
Ubuntu distributions:
  * Fedora - http://fedora.redhat.com (Fedora 15 DVD/Live CD/USB)
  * Open SuSE - http://opensuse.org (OpenSuSE 11.4 - DVD/Live CD/)
  * Ubuntu - http://www.ubuntu.com  (Natty Narwahl 11.04 CD/USB)
We generally have them on local drives and can burn CDs/DVDs and
USBs.Since there are many variants of these distros, we advise you to
bring an empty USB stick with sufficient memory to hold one of the
distros.

In addition, you can run Linux on your Windows PC through a virtual
machine manager, such as Virtualbox. You can install this in your
Windows machine and run Linux as a guest OS, or install it in your Linux
machine and run Windows as a guest. VirtualBox 4.0.8.
(http://www.virtualbox.org.) is free and is available for Linux, Windows
XP and Windows Vista. Additionally, there are some VMWare clients that
are also free for Windows.

Lunch is generously sponsored By Ron Thibeau and John Ross, Bluefin
Technical Services.

Please refer to the BLU website (http://www.blu.org) for further
information and directions. Parking is free and available in front of
the building on Amherst St. Enter the building, and take the elevator to
your left down 1 floor. Room 061 is opposite the elevator.

What makes this installfest bigger than the other ones? Are more

I think he's running with LC_NUMERIC=la_RM, in which case
`XL' is his localised representation of 40.

[Fwd: Thanks for the help]

2011-06-03 Thread Ken D'Ambrosio
Hey, all -- once again, GNHLUG comes through in spades. Thanks, all, for
helping Greg out; he's a good guy, and took the Linux course with (believe
it or don't) no influence from my part... aside, that is, from convincing
his mother that, yes, Linux was something that would help him in the job
market.

Have a great weekend, all!

tcl/tk bootstrap

2011-06-03 Thread Jerry Feldman
Over the years I have use tcl/tk applications, such as exmh, but have
not had a need to learn tcl/tk. Right now I have a need to develop a
tcl/tk script that contains a few list boxes and a couple of text boxes
for input text. I've been going through the tutorial, but I'm having a
bit of trouble getting to a starting point.
Phase 1 of the script will be a wrapper for an existing bash script. I'm
wondering if anyone out there has a small tcl/tk script that I could use
as a starting point to save me some time.

I was joking, in case that wasn't obvious. :)

Is LC_NUMERIC=la_RM a real thing for some stuff, or are you also
joking? I tried it on my box Deb 5.0 box and was disappointed ls -l
didn't output Roman numerals for the sizes. :)

Yes, that was a HHOS joke :)

la is an actual ISO-639-1 language-code, and it does actualy refer
to ancient Latin, but there doesn't appear to be any code for Rome
in ISO 639; so I used RM, because that's the closest thing I could find.

Yes, I did spend a fair amount of time on the research for that joke... :)

Did you add (or uncomment) la_RM (or la_RM.UTF-8?) in /etc/locale.gen
and then run the locale-gen command?

You know, a given locale isn't actually supported on Debian until you've
done that (or had dpkg-reconfigure locales do it for you) :)

Uh, of course I meant doesn't appear to be any code for Rome in ISO 3166.
