I see some of their current models are listed as running Linux
internally. Gives me more confidence in their networking features.
Nice of them to give some information on the internals. Even their pan
& tilt model looks affordable (at newegg.com). Axis looks mostly priced
higher than I care to spend for now.

Looking for an IP camera

2007-02-26 Thread David Long
Can someone recommend a good simple IP camera? I bought a D-Link
DCS-950 a while back and was severely disappointed (as I should have
been based on reviews I read before I bought it). After various similar
experiences with D-Link routers I've vowed never again to buy another
D-Link product. I just need something that plugs into 10/100Base-T and
provides a web interface for still shots, without requiring a host
computer. I do have a DSL router I might use. I do *not* need
something that insists on providing video through some Windows-only
client software. I do *not* need or want wireless. I do not require
camera positioning features (which seem to add a lot to the price).
Motion detection would be a plus. It probably needs a way to either do
Dynamic DNS, or periodically contact me.

The application is remotely monitoring a property.

The ATM at the airport accepted my DCU ATM card for cash. The Marriott
in Seoul would not accept my DCU Visa to pay my hotel bill. On my
second trip over I used my Chase Visa (I think). I did try calling DCU,
but there was nothing I could say to them that would make them authorize
a transaction. New rule: Bring at least two credit cards when
traveling international.

Interestingly, I learned to my dismay that Digital Federal Credit Union

Re: q for the C hackers

2003-08-19 Thread David Long

I stand corrected. My claim came from a very old document. The only
(draft) version of the ISO standard I have at my finger tips says it is
now "unspecified". I think my argument still stands though since it is
likely some compilers will not do this optimization (assuming it is
still unspecified), and probably none will do it across compilation
units.

One more case where the allocation of a const variable is useful though
is when you want to set the values at link time. You can put all these
*constants* in one C file and link with the version of your choice.
Especially handy for binary-only distributions.

I would stick with defines. More modern languages have the option of
effectively treating a "const" declaration as an immediate value, but I
do not believe that C can. However there are times when a declaration
which allocates storage is necessary, as when you need to pass a pointer
to a value. Also, for strings the C standard requires each literal
string constant to occupy unique read/write storage (in case the code
decides to rewrite part of it). Therefore allocating a (optionally
const) variable will use less storage than repeated use of a define'd
string constant. Alternatively most compilers provide an option for
making string constants read-only.

The "const" type modifier is part of the ANSI/ISO C language standard
(as is "void" and various other post K&R enhancements).

I got distracted. I have committed to using the new "Upcoming Events"

should be very simple from now on to check on the upcoming meetings.
The calendar page should eventually be resurrected too.

Clearly the Python talk was a hit (thanks again Bill). We want to find
more topics like this that are of interest to a lot of people so please
don't be shy about making suggestions either to this list, or to me if
you prefer not to post to a public forum. We have a couple suggestions
in our pocket (in addition to earlier suggestions down in the Wiki's).
Maybe we can gather them up and get a vote (on those for which we have
presenters) for a topic for the August MerriLUG meeting.

Disclaimer: I'm not a beer brewer or beer drinker, although I am an
avid wine and cider maker and consumer.

We have at least a couple experienced home brewers on the list (I know
Rob is certainly one). My old group at Compaq used to have group-brews
at Incredibrew, but I suspect something could be arranged without having
to involve a brew-on-the-premises operation like Incredibrew (not that
that's necessarily a bad thing). Those of us in Nashua are lucky that
we have Jaspers a short walk from Martha's, where one can pick up pretty
much anything you might need for beer/wine/cider-making, including some
excellent advice from our friend Jeff who owns/operates Jaspers. But I
think amongst people on this list we already have quite a good selection
of equipment that could be used in a brew-fest (and I can harass Rob
into finally harvesting some of those hops he's been growing for quite
some time). Don't know where we would host such an event if not at
Incredibrew though.

I just talked to Comcast phone support and said I was a Linux user and
needed the info (to paraphrase Dr. Evil). They were quite helpful and
succint. The information I got for Nashua was:

outgoing email: smtp.comcast.net
incoming email: mail.comcast.net (POP3)

They confirmed nothing else needed changing (didn't ask about news). My
new email will be my old username in the comcast.net domain. They said
the existing username would *not* be carried over in all cases. The
changes are affective 00:00 EDT 7/1/03.

I personally would manually set this stuff even if I were using
windoze. I don't want to be coerced into checking any boxes on some
online signup thing. Of course I try to never use my windoze box on the
internet, mostly a matter of principle. Note their webpages state that
continued use of their service is implicit agreement to their terms and
conditions.

They did not mention issues with email forwarding when not using the
"transition wizard", although I did not specifically ask.

It could also be a situation like the OSF faced many years ago when Sun
was secretly funding some company (name escapes me) to sue the OSF
(can't remember the complaint either). When the lawyers demanded that
the secret source of funding be revealed (under the right to face your
accusers in court) Sun got some bad press. Apparently not much though
since I can't locate a record of this on the web.

So maybe Microsoft is secretly funding SCO just to cause problems.
Would not surprise me at all.
