keepassx

2014-07-31 Thread Karl Hergenrother
I just bought a Chromebook. Its a good computer for my needs, a tablet
with a keyboard. However, I have one major disappointment. I have used
Keepass and KeepassX for years to manage my passwords. Chrome has an app
called Keepass Chrome, but I have been unsuccessful in getting this Chrome
app to read the old .kdb file. You would think with a name like that it
would be able to input the old database file. I would appreciate any
suggestions. Google searches have turned up nothing,

Thank you for listening to my problem.

Chromcast

2014-03-08 Thread Karl Hergenrother
I'm running Ubuntu 12.4 on a dual boot laptop. I have a Chromcast dongle
on my TV. I am unable to cast to it. I must switch to Windows Vista on
this computer to cast. It is the only time I ever boot to Windows, which
is very slw. Has anybody been able to cast to Chromcast from Ubuntu?
The technicians at Google have been no help. I don't remember seeing this
topic on this forum.

Thanks,

computer repair

2008-05-06 Thread Karl Hergenrother
I thought of removing the cover, but it is not obvious how. I turned it on
its back and saw many small screws. Most marked F5 and a few marked
F10. I removed the F5s and the cover did not move. I chickened out and
replaced the screws. One doesn't want to break the wife's computer.

Since I started this note, I discovered this reference. You can find almost
anything on the Internet It appears from the pictures that the power socket
is mounted directly to the motherboard. It might be a difficult repair.

Computer repair shop

2008-05-04 Thread Karl Hergenrother
My wife's 3 year old Toshiba Satellite laptop has had intermittent charging
problems. I have replaced its battery, but that didn't help. Right now it
will not charge at all. I'm fairly sure that the problem is in the socket
on the computer which accepts the charger plug. Those things must take a
beating over the years. Can someone suggest a good repair shop on the
Nashua/Lowell area?

Thanks,

Re: Linux Made Easy: Linspire 5.0

You are also right that I am primarily intrigued that some variety of Linux

approaching zero as a limit in fact). High reliability on a wide variety of
hardware and ease of use and deployment are also important, of course.

This may be common knowledge to most, but I was unable to load Fedora
Core 1 onto a Pentium II 200 when the software announced that the
processor was not up to the task. This same computer has been running
Win2k for 4 years doing normal office and Internet tasks.

Is the summary that no one has any experience with Xandros, but the
Microtel PC is probably suitable for an inexpensive desktop? Sounds

I will too. I don't need a floppy drive or modem (I have several
spares). I also have DSL and a wireless network. But seriously, why
would a no OS/software system cost more than the Xandros system with
OpenOffice and other software loaded. Marketing I guess.

Thanks for all the advice.

Walmart-Xandors

2005-04-18 Thread Karl Hergenrother
Has anyone have any experience with, or comment about the Microtel
Xandros Linux computers offered by Walmart. These computers aren't very
powerful by today's standards, but for a straight vanilla desktop with
Linux and OpenOffice perloaded, I haven't seen a better bargain. I need
to replace my 200 MHz Pentium II.

OT from Tokyo

Someone sent me these. If true, which I doubt, Balmer must be a vivid red.
I think they are funny.

In Japan, they have replaced the impersonal and unhelpful
Microsoft error messages with Haiku poetry messages.
They're used to communicate a timeless message,
often achieving a wistful, yearning and powerful insight
through extreme brevity. Here are 16 actual error messages from Japan,
enjoy.

The Web site you seek
Cannot be located, but
Countless more exist.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

Program aborting:
Close all that you have worked on.
You ask far too much.

Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

Your file was so big.
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.

Stay the patient course.
Of little worth is your ire.
The network is down.

A crash reduces
Your expensive computer
To a simple stone.

Three things are certain:
Death, taxes and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

You step in the stream,
But the water has moved on.
This page is not here.

Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.

What, like having it default to having it auto login as root? That's a
HUGE security issue and one of the main reasons windows viruses work so
well since they have total control of the system.

Indeed. I have been saying for years that it is only a matter of time
before Linux becomes inundated with its own familiar of viruses, worms,
trojans, and crappy software. Putting a technologically-ignorant operator
in charge of a system enables all manner of failures. I firmly believe
that
LindowsOS is a big step in that direction.
